From Queen Elizabeth to Mary-Kate, Mr. Blackwell's Ten All-Time Worst-Dressed Women

Photo Essay

Mr. Blackwell, the infamous fashion critic who created the Ten Worst-Dressed List, died on Sunday of an intestinal infection. He was 86. For decades, he wrote cheeky critiques of celebrity fashion and style and completed 48 lists in all. To honor Mr. Blackwell, wowOwow has collected ten victims of his stinging remarks. From a recent blast at Mary-Kate Olsen saying “she resembles a tattered toothpick trapped in a hurricane” to a 1963 critique of Elizabeth Taylor, comparing her style to “the rebirth of the zeppelin,” not even the Queen was safe from one of Mr. Blackwell’s style slaps.

With the exception of Madonna and maybe Elizabeth Taylor (only because i can’t recall any of her clothes) I’d have to say I agree with Mr. Blackwell’s list of worst dressed! RIP Mr. Blackwell. With any luck you won’t be residing next to any of the people you “dressed down” for eternity…

Shame! Dolly and Sophia are untouchable. And Cher as well, who is surprisingly NOT on this list but that is a good thing…

And get off the Queen’s back………….

Don, the Queen is notorious for her lack of fashion sense… but what could she care, she’s the Queen! I met the Queen of Persia once. Now there was a queen. Stylishly dressed in shaded and layered blue silk. This queen didn’t wear anything hiding her face and was very lovely. As queens go, I guess she really cared. What a terribly dull job, though. Sitting through hours of shaking hands with a bunch of people she doesn’t know. Putting up with stupid men like my former husband saying, “Gee, hyuck, hyuck, I’ve never met a queen before.” Now that’s grounds for divorce… interesting I still remember the moment.

I always thought that “Mr.” Blackwell was less than a gentleman, and often wrong, plain wrong. Women like Sophia Loren and Dollie Parton, who have Venus-like bodies, are always going to wear clothes completely differently than the young people on this list (4, as I remember) and 3 of whose bodies look anorexic. The dress Mary Kate is wearing is quite nice; we are just “put-off” by her too thin body. I am sure his mean comments didn’t help a trying-to-recover anorexic. Victoria Beckham is just a fashionista, all body and trying to find a brain, it seems to me, in the few times I’ve seen her or read about her. Maybe she’ll mature. Most women are in the middle as far as body-type, and then “taste” is more apparent at a first-glance. Over the decades, I remember Elizabeth Taylor and Sophia Loren as being quite well dressed. Madonna, in real life, seems to be quite sane, but her career wardrobe may have blinded Blackwell; it certainly went beyond the pale. Dollie Parton’s clothes were never what attracted me; her smile, glowing skin and sparkling eyes were SO alive, that I never paid attention to how hard it was to fit her. It was so hard to dress her; her body attracted attention, but she seemed to have decent taste and expressed it the best she could with the body she has. Camilla Parker-Bowles never showed any fashion sense, and many normal-size women feel the same way; she’s just practical and not particularly pleasing in any way, so she tends to downplay it all. Maybe that’s wise. On the other hand, dress and appearance were playing second best, as she must have some interesting vibes of her own to have nabbed a future king. For Queen Elizabeth, she demands so much respect. She could be wearing anything, doing nothing, living a worthless life of privilege. She’s never been that way! Instead, she mirrors the women of her country, in being simply dressed most of the time, and in as comfortable clothes as she can find for being in the limelight, decade after decade; it can’t be fun. She got a woman’s body after delivering a few of her 4 children, and didn’t do the slavish fad thing of “working out”. Instead, she accepted her mother-body, and didn’t let the oggling men like Blackwell, chart her course. She wears sensible shoes, walks and stands for long hours and continues on, at about age 84, with a workday that most people 1/4 her age couldn’t tolerate. Yet, she’s chipper and happy and positive about life. She makes a tremendous difference in raising people’s consciousness about the plight of others, and she is very compassionate. So, Blackwell, your life of negativity is “over”. I for one, won’t miss you, and many of the women you scorned, especially Elizabeth Regina, have done, and will do, more for the world than you could ever imagine.

Most of the time I agreed with him. There is such a difference between the words fashion, style and taste, and he usually nailed it. Of course, Dolly knows her taste isn’t always fashion, but she has her own style and laughingly says that it costs a lot of money to look like she does. I still think that Sophia Loren is always put together beautifully, and I hope I’m so lucky when I’m in my mid-70’s…

I agree with you, Diana. I’m not sure what made him the arbiter of the well-dressed celeb, but I think I understand what he was getting at with his list. We’ve largely forgotten how to dress to our best advantage, and Blackwell reminded that fashion and style do not equal good taste and an eye for flattering design and color. I never took his list as personal attacks on the people, only comments on their attire. But like you, I also questioned Sophia’s place on the list. She always looks exquisite to me.

My late husband always said that her hands were the most beautifully groomed he ever saw. She was on Charlie Rose years ago, and he was talking more about the hands than the face. And, he was correct. I believe she is the epitome of understated elegance. Just enough jewelry, never too much. And, she still has that magnificent complexion…

Try googling him. Regis was quoting from his obit this morning on Regis and Kelly. Very interesting story, born in Bensonhurst, changed his name, and also Mr. Blackwell was a pseudonym on top of the name change.

Me to! Who would be on your list? I would include Chloe Sevigny, Mischa Barton, Paris Hilton… these are the young ones. Older ones I don’t have time to think about right now cuz i’m late for school!
