Despite the cold, despite the economy, clothes made the woman and spoke volumes over these past few days of Inaugural celebration.
This was the week that was in Washington fashion, a time of protocol and good manners — the dealings between the Bushes and the Obamas and the formality of the Inaugural program were instructive in this age of post-Paris Hilton crumble. It was a great spell of days for designers including Narciso Rodriguez, Jason Wu and Isabel Toledo, thanks to Michelle Obama. But what do you think? Will this be the administration that launches a thousand belts?
Nearly all the First Lady’s outfits and the J. Crew coats worn by First Daughters, Malia and Sasha, featured some kind of belting, whether chic ribbons or bold patent leather. Or how about the color purple, originally associated with nobility because of the high cost of purple dye? Is purple, an aspirational color, another of this week’s trends? Barbara and George Bush, the elder, wore purple scarves and so, too, did the 44th president on Inauguration Day. Michelle Obama wore a purple coat by Zero + Maria Cornejo for the train ride from Philadelphia to Washington.
