Obama Daughters' First Dog: The Best Puppies for the White House (Photo Essay)

Photo Essay

In his victory speech Tuesday night, President-elect Barack Obama promised his daughters a new puppy.

“Sasha and Malia, I love you both more than you can imagine. And you earned the new puppy that’s coming with us,” he said. To help Obama deliver on his promise, wowOwow has found 11 perfect pups to bring to the White House. These puppies are uniquely suited for Obama’s eldest daughter Malia, who suffers from allergies; some have coats that barely shed, others have no dander, others are “hypoallergenic.”

Of course, our vote would be for a lovable rescue dog of any breed … or no breed at all.

Hobbes purred just like that !! Near the end he was deaf, poor guy. We finally had to have him put down when he was 18 … I cried like a baby !!!! My son couldn’t bear to be here for it, but visited his grave in the backyard first thing when he came home. A wonderful animal !

Labor-doddal I dont klnow if I am spelling that right ? But those dogs are bred not to shed and for people with alergies ..I fell in Love after the fact I got Rat Terriers …and the Main man @ the AKC dog show said One Rat Terrier is better than 10 cats ! And I know I had cats that did jack …I lived in the country and they did nothing …because I feed them …After the cats the Rat terriers hunted all the time non-stop .Even when I was sleeping my female I could hear her little toes on the wooden floor all night hunting in my house .Now I have 4 !I wouldnt be alive if it wasnt for them …No kidding !

Actually, no, it’s a Golden-doodle. Cross of Golden and poodle, not Labrador I love other peoples dogs, just don’t need one for myself. I don’t need my cats to do anything for me either, just be there for me to pet and watch. Plus, with coyotes in my area I can’t let them out to even catch mice. I had Fox Terriers as a kid, cute, but nervous and barked like crazy.

I heard that they were going to adopt from a shelter for sure. Not sure of the breed, but adopting any dog from a shelter would be a great symbol to our country! http://www.peticure.com

While a standard poodle is an excellent choice there is a lot of grooming involved. Recently I rescued a greyhound and this is a very unique breed. I have not been able to find any puppies but there are many rescue organizations and this dogs desperately need forever homes. As puppies they are not socialized but kept in cages and only let out to eat and train. They have no humans to love them but when they are adopted they are the most excellent companions and are truly wonderous in their new world. Most are about 2 to 3 years old when they are retired but they are so puppy like when you get them because of their early life. And even though they are rather large they are so great and while they do like to run and play they are very calm dogs and are so very great with children. Greyhound Friends of NJ can help.

Would you really want young girls going around telling people “My dog is a bichi”?

LOL, the pick is mine. I’m sure Sasha and Mallia have much more class!

Oh, it just delights me to think there will be children in the White House again. And I’ll bo so tickled to see what kind of puppy they’ll pick, and hear about what they name it. We have so many good things to look forward to.

I think the other article on WOW of the labra doodle is so adorable…I have a 6 year old pit bull and he has been the best dog ever. I mean he lets our 2 1/2 year old do anything and I mean anything to him. She drops down on top of him and pulls his ears and tails and anything else she can grab. All Zeke does is just lay there… I wish the Obama’s luck in finding a dog for their girls.

Golden/Labradoodle is my vote. A mixed breed dog that’s great with kids, loves to play and doesn’t shed. Since it one of the “new” breeds, it will be healthier, too. I’m all for adopting from a rescue organization — that’s where I have gotten my dogs — but you don’t always know what you’re getting in terms of issues and past histories. If young children are involved, especially if this is their first dog, I’d go with a reliable breeder.

There has been much discussion about Malia Obama, who has asthma, getting a “hypoallergenic” dog. My concern is that this could lead to disappointing - if not seriously detrimental - consequences for the future First Family and others in a similar situation. There is, unfortunately, no such thing as a truly non-allergenic or hypoallergenic dog. Dogs (and cats for that matter) produce allergenic proteins that can be found in their dander and saliva, regardless of their breed or the length and color of their hair, or lack thereof. Some may produce more - or less - allergens than others simply because of their individual nature. Allergen immunotherapy may be an option for those who wish to be desensitized to such allergens.

I liked all the dogs, probably a Goldenoddle etc would be best but also liked that Giant Schnauzer. We had a Schnauzer growing up…they are outstanding dogs for kids. Jiggy lived over 20 years from my childhood well into my son’s. He was an incredibly smart dog….very gentle with everyone in the family, very playful and full of fun, and also super protective of the family and watchful of children which is typical of the breed. He’d do anything we did, my little sister could dress him up and wheel him around in a buggy, he’d swim with us in the pool, on his b-day we’d even have a party for him, put a b-date hat on him and seat him at the dinning room table with linen tablecloth. He was a clown and would pose, happy to be feted. He was a very heroic dog too. He was thrown from the car that went over a cliff in the mountains and went to the bottom and was destroyed. Jiggy was gone for a week, and then it started raining in that deserted area. We’d put up flyers and a rancher found him when he came out with a shotgun thinking it was a coyote fighting his dogs for their dinner and recognized him fromour passouts. My mother had said he’d absolutely come home even if it took months for him to walk all that distance. And sure enough he’d made his way far down the mountain. It’s great they will get a rescue dog, and a smart thing to make that part of the move package so the girls have their own special friend. They must be so excited….I am just waiting to see what they’ll select.

OK. Other than the Giant Schnauser, every one of those recommended are yapping little poopers, and they live forever pooping and yapping everywhere!!! Why would anybody recommend dogs like that for the White House??? They should go with a Great Pyrenees, a Bernese Mountain Dog, or some other breed that never gets past adolescence. The house train easily and early, they adore children, and are quite protective.

OK, needless to say I wholeheartedly agree about the Bernese :)
