In this slideshow, author Gene Weingarten and photographer Michael S. Williamson share stories and photographs from their book Old Dogs Are the Best Dogs.

Old Dogs, published by Simon & Schuster, pays tribute to unforgettable older companions.

“This is a tribute to old dogs, a celebration of their special virtues,” Weingarten writes in the book’s dedication. “All dogs profiled in this book were at least 10 years old when their portraits were made. If you ask us which of them are still alive, our answer is: They all are. May old dogs live forever.”

Do you have an unforgettable old dog? E-mail photos to submit@wowowow.com and we will feature them in a future slideshow.

I am the owner of a beautfiul 6 year old pit bull, Zeke. He has been such a wonderful dog. Our 2 1/2 year old calls him “her Zeke Zeke” and he just loves it. My daughter can do anything and I mean anything to him and he just takes it. He will be sleeping and I mean snoring and my daughter will go over and plop down right on top of him and lay on top of him. She puts her head right between his shoulders and lays all the way down him…he doesnt move. He lets her ride on his back and she can pull every inch of him and he doesnt care. The other night he was laying at my feet and my daughter came over and stepped on him, right on his ribs so she could climb easier up on the sofa. That dog didnt even inhale hard when she jumped on his ribs…I was in total amazement…Of course I tell my daughter every day to lay off Zeke, be easy with Zeke, but when she ignores him he walks over to her and pushes his way into her arms. When she doesnt see him for a couple of days if we are out of town and we get home she just screams Zeke, Zeke and he comes running over full force and stops just in the nick of time…Its amazing to see their connection. Zeke has epilepsy and has to take meds twice a day. Thankfully those meds work b/c watching an 80 pound dog have seizures is so very scary. Frannie I am truly sorry to hear about your loss… I can’t imagine what my life would be withour our Zeke, Zeke!

Is there any creature more devoted to us than dogs? No matter what, they love us the way we all wish we could be loved by people, warts and all. In my life, I have had many, many dogs, all so dear and I truly hope they wait for me at the end of the Rainbow Bridge. We are the rescue contact for our breed in our area. Someone died over New Year’s and the two dogs were taken to the shelter. Our shelters are loaded with the most beautiful animals but these were the first Tibetan Terriers they had seen. The rescue coordinator for our national club asked us to see what we could do. Unfortunately, one was a male and our boy Remy is not accepting of other males so we agreed to take the female. Of the two, she was the least likely to be adopted. Older, she prefers to be thought of as mature, Babe Doohan is quite a gal. Her teeth were terrible but in another life, I must have been a dental technician because I am the Tooth Fairy around here. I got to work on that right away. She is on a diet because the person with whom she previously resided had dementia and forgot about having fed Babe. She, of course, did not raise her paw and indicate, “Oh, no thank you, I’ve had enough.” Subsequently, she has an incredible amount of weight to take off, and this has made her almost unable to move around. I have to say, Babe has a strong will to her and she is as determined to get going. She moves better every day, minds beautifully, asks to go outside and sleeps through the night without a sound. Her tail wags furiously when she sees us and she is politely curious about the cats but never infringes upon their personal space. Such a heart she has and I couldn’t let that good old gal die in the shelter just because she wasn’t a puppy. Babe Doohan will live with us till the end of her days and I will be with her at the end, feeling deeply fortunate for having known her. I am impressed with how quickly she stepped up to the plate and adjusted to her knew life with us. I should only hope to be as adaptable. Never rule out the dignity or an older dog if you are rescuing a companion. No, they won’t be with you as long as a puppy but they will enrich your life like fine wine.

That book was fun. I was with my dad for most of the dogs. Sure was fun to make! And so far, this book is a success! I think the dogs were even cuter in real life!

I too recently lost my beloved friend of 16 years.  He was graceful even in his older years.  Last year I adopted a shelter dog and I think I will adopt another….  It is soo nice to give an animal the love and friendship that they deserve.

For all lovers of dogs, old or young, I highly recommend the book "Beautiful Joe’s Paradise" not sure of the author.  Our mom read it to us when we were little after losing our beloved dog.  I tear up everytime I think of it, but it’s a very comforting and beautiful book for all ages.
