Eleanor Roosevelt without a doubt. Jackie represented Camelot to me. New hope. I was so excited when at the inauguration she picked a “cloth” coat to walk down the Avenue. A lot was written about that at that time. I so wanted Hillary to succeed with her health plans. but of all the First Ladies I have known in my life time Eleanor has top billing for me.

I think Dolley Madison would have been an amazing First Lady for the modern era, in much the same way as she was in her own day. She had style, pluck, and humor, was evidently a wonderful conversationalist and hostess, and did not panic in the face of a crisis. I can just imagine what a force she would have been in the 20th or 21st centuries!

Abigail is No. 1 in my book, then Eleanor; Jackie certainly had class as does Michelle.

Frank, check out what happened in the thread about Laura Bush being mad about Obama remarks. Where are these people coming from? It seems as though as soon as some thread comes up that is critical of Bush-Palin-Coulter… someone at some crazy right wing blog sends them all over here. One even said “Katrina was a blessing in disguise for some people” because now they have better houses! Oh, and we should NEVER say anything bad about our president or else we are bad Americans who belong in China and Russia.

Lady Bird Johnson — She was so real — so down to earth. Wonderful smile and great sense of humor. Pat Nixon —who kept it all together when her world was falling down around her. Betty Ford - she wasn’t afraid to express her opinions. Nancy Reagan — her efforts to bring beauty and grace back to the White House and her untiring work with children. Hillary Clinton for her decision to run for President. Laura Bush — her work with women around the world - her wonderful gracious smile - her humor.

Eleanor Roosevelt of course, but also there was Dolley Madison who was really first lady to more than one president, for when Thomas Jefferson needed a social hostess, he called on the wife of his Secretary of State, James Madison. And I did love Lady Bird. My favorite picture of her is the one where she is sitting in a field of the wildflowers she loved so much: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y250/PhotozOnline/Album%20Two/LadyBirdJ…
