Thanks for the tip! I am waiting for a book about Joan of Arc and will definitely read about Abigail Adams too, because these are two people that I have repeatedly heard praised in here, yet I know very little about either.

Joan of Arc was a truly remarkable woman. Her life story is just amazing! What book is it?

Joan of Arc: By Herself and Her Witnesses” By Régine Pernoud. I ordered it through Amazon and since I am nearly through the book I am reading at the moment, I hope it arrives soon. The only thing I know about Joan of Arc is what I learned watching Ingrid Bergman play her in the movie, and that was a zillion years ago!

Skip Joan of Arc and read about Abigail, unless you admire truly mad, religious zealots!

I have also seen “Dearest Friend” by Lynne Withey… have you heard of this one or read it?

The more I learn about the first ladies, even the ones I didn’t like at the time, the more I admire all of them. I keep thinking about what a mess of things I would have made!

Thank you for sharing this photo essay. I am not American, but am very interested in US Political History and contemporary politics. I agree that Michelle Obama will also contribute something amazing to the White House. How exciting it is to be American! These women are an inspiration!

Good Heavens!! Are we loosing our marbles down here or what ???? I’m quite sure I answered this question some months ago??? Is it deja vu or plain Alzheimer, pls adv!!!! Anyway, I’ll do it again. Here is my choice of FL: Abigail Adams/Eleanor Roosevelt/Jackie Kennedy & now, I want to add Michelle Obama just because I think she is a great woman, I get her vibe: strong/clever &sexy. My best wishes to her & to the USA, you are the hope of all the Americas. God bless America!!! (all of us….)

I so much admire Abigail Adams, as my favorite First Lady, that I recently wrote a six-person play about her. ABIGAIL SOLO is about the decade when John was off to the Revolutionary War and she held the family and farm together. Abigail was making waves as a single mom, even before she became First Lady.

Where is Dolley Madison on this list? The title “First Lady” was created for her. She was the queen of Washington society for nearly forty years.

In the Harry Truman Presidential Library in Independence, MO, there is a great story about the secret service agents standing outside the dining room as the President, Margaret, and Bess ate dinner. When they heard a ruckus, they walked in to see the three members of the First Family engaged in a watermelon seed spitting contest! No matter what you accomplish or who you sign treaties with, the President remains merely a man. And a wife who reminds him of that, whether it’s with her letters, her candor, or a watermelon seed between the eyes, does him a huge favor. She didn’t look like Jackie Kennedy; she didn’t have a newspaper column; and she didn’t have an invalid to care for. She had an honest man for a husband and we were lucky enough to have him for a President. He was lucky enough to have Bess for a wife.

Michelle Obama,is she first lady yet?, come on, lets find out WHO she is before we vote on her. Hillary Clinton, good grief, where is Laura Bush on this list, she is wonderful. I think you should have a vote by people who really count, and that is the public, certainly not by all liberal Democrats, not the media, we know where they stand or actors, likewise!
