I couldn’t agree more, Rita. It amazes me that all the so-called “informed” and “influential” media types are so narrow-minded and petty. I think only the passage of time allows us to evaluate the worth of all First Ladies and their husbands. It’s certainly ridiculous to think one can judge someone a success even before they take office. But, hey, they all decided to hate GWB before he even took the oath of office and they will continue to blame him for all the evils of this world forever. Pathetic.

I thought all the comments about the "most distinguished" first ladies were valid and informative.  It seems, however, that Ms. Stahl is a better history student than geography.  The Betty Ford Center is not in Palm Beach, CA.  You meant Palm Desert, CA, which is close to Indian Wells,  Cathedral City, Palm Springs and Palm Desert, all being considerably inland than any beach city.

I think each first lady had their own challenges in their own times. From colonial to industrial times, each I would applaud for many reasons. But before being a First Lady, they were one like us.  So, with that being said. I applaud ALL ladies who hold onto the words of Faith, Hope, and Charity.

Life is a challenge enough.  But to not allow another living being to hold you back from your dreams, goals, and visions.  To me, you all are FIRST LADIES in my book. :smiles:

I think Abigail Adams and Dolly Madison for laying the foundation for who the first lady could be.  Eleanor Roosevelt for her accomplishments and compassion both as first lady and for the rest of her life.  Betty Ford for having the courage to show us that having a weakness and overcoming it can show you the way to heal yourself and others.  I’m not sure that having a "sense of style" or looking good in designer clothes qualifies you as a great person.
