Paul Newman, the beloved legend, actor and philanthropist passed away today. We salute the man and his career with a photo essay of some of his most famous roles.
Even though we kind of knew it was coming, this post is the first I’ve heard and I feel like I’ve been hit with a sledge hammer. Poor Joanne… my heart goes out to all his family. Thanks wOw for the photo’s, by god he was a handsome devil right to the end… where are those kleenexs…
No actor exhibited more class than Paul Newman. He was good-looking, cool, and just sexy! He was in most of the movies of my childhood that my mom dragged me to see from “Cat On A Hot Tin Roof” to “Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid” and all his movies in between. His acting was always so nuanced and just plain good. He was so different in every movie and viewers were always able to submerge themselves in those characters. Actors today who broadcast their every personal issue could learn a lot from him. It takes a lot now for the required “suspension of disbelief” that allows us mortals to see “stars” in their roles on the screen.
More importantly, Paul had a good heart. He gave away millions to charitable causes. He lent a helping hand to those who needed it the most. It was obvious his charity wasn’t for show either, it was just a part of who he was. Probably from the part of him that didn’t approve of movie stars signing their audigraphs!
My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and his family.
Those spectacular eyes! Thanks for giving us all those great characters. Please carry on Joanne and family with our thoughts and prayers for the good work you all do.
Paul Newman was the Ultimate Man. He was a regular fellow, and always stuck to the upbringing his parents gave him of giving back to others the good fortune he gained.
And, even when tragedy struck his family, he rose above it. He was an elegant class act in every way.
Thank you for running this tribute to Paul Newman.
Sad news indeed! I never thought of him as someone in his 80s. His name always envoked an image of the great parts he played. Sexiest man around and great actor rolled into one. Eyes and a voice that made me melt.
He lived a great life. Played great parts, had a good marriage which in Hollywood terms is rare. But he didn’t live the Hollywood lifestyle. He did have a passion for racing as well as a passion for helping others.
While we will always remember him. I just hope future generations will not come to know him as the man on the popcorn box., but what that box of popcorn will do for so many good causes.
Heaven must be smiling.
When hearing about Paul Newman’s passing my first instinct was to call my dearest childhood friend to talk about the first man we had a crush on. Over the years, the crush turned into respect and admiration for a man who knew how to utilize his fame to improve the lives of children. My thoughts and prayers go to his loving family. May his memory inspire others to change the world!
i grew up in a town next to westport, and from early childhood, there was always a little paul newman influence in our lives from the westport country playhouse, to my older brother seeing nell in social circles and beach parties, to a few funny family stories like the time paul newman did a double take when he saw my father in athena diner for lunch one day about 25 years ago. most people said there was a close resemblance, but my dad’s eyes were green, and thankfully still are. it was funny that the source of the resemblance thought so, too.
our deepest sympathies go to the whole newman family.
We still have his films, that’s something.
He is a role model for every man of every age: decent, authentic, intelligent, talented, sexy and generous. I hope this doesn’t sound glib, but I’m going out and buying a few extra bottles of his salad dressing to give his charities a bump.
