Sasha and Malia Beanie Babies, More Obama-Branded Products (Photos)

Obama memorabilia is sweeping the nation … From doggy dishes to Sasha and Malia Beanie Babies, we found some fascinating products inspired by our new president and his family

Photo Essay

Sasha and Malia are becoming celebrity darlings much like their President father Barack Obama. “Sweet Sasha” and “Marvelous Malia” dolls swept the nation these past few days with charges that the dolls are mirror images of President Obama’s young daughters. While the Ty Girlz dolls do share the same name and likeness of President Obama’s young daughters, the makers of the new dolls, Ty of Beanie Babies fame, say that the dolls are not modeled after the darling First Daughters. The dolls sell for $9.99 each.

While it’s delightful that we have young, seemingly wholesome girls in the White House, it’s remarkable how they are creating a global sensation with their smiles and styles. Seven-year-old Sasha and ten-year-old Malia wore J. Crew coats on Inauguration day, and on Wednesday the company’s website crashed and J. Crew stock jumped ten percent. The Obama ladies can be leveraged to make profits. And, of course, the Obama girls aren’t the only charmers with celebrity images helping companies make profits. Obama memorabilia is sweeping the nation, too.

Strike while the iron is hot is an old saw that seems appropriate. If there is a buck to be made, someone is out there making it.

You’re right… why would anyone call a 10 yr old and a 7 yr old “seemingly wholesome girls”? That is odd.

It’s an old slur on women (even female children) of color. I’m totally confused—and hurt—by it appearing here.

Seemingly? Sweet Baby Huey, WOW should certainly apologize for this gaff.

I’m glad I’m not alone in this. But I wish I knew what to do about it. I want to make that statement disappear. But today I saw an article on wOw, which I won’t read, about “Cookies” and “Negroes” — and realized that the insinuation might have been intentional. If so :-(

when it comes to the entrepreneurial class in this country there will always be sleazy slime bags—we’re not ever going to get away from it. Just endure it.

Come on Ty…. the dolls are not modeled after the Obama girls?? And do you think that would hold up in court? I know the Obamas are not happy about this and didn’t give their permission.

That company should NEVER have produced those dolls without the express permission of the Obama family. Have they NO shame?

When it comes to making a buck —no they have no shame—look at John Thain for the prototype of this type of business.
