Anne Rice’s LeStat (her books, not the movies) had me entertained for a time; really enjoyed her romps and her characterizations. But got tired of the sameness after a while — well, after about five books.

I loved her chronicles, too, found her writing absolutely mesmerizing and her characters fascinating. I got lost in those books, but as you pointed out, they were very sad, too. Now Rice has become a devote Catholic and has all but disclaimed her wonderful vampire books as trips to the dark side of hell. I know that she lost the two people who were dearest to her — her daughter and husband. Her vampire tales are obviously cathartic in her search to come to terms with death, but I hope she realizes that there was great good that came of it as well.

I never saw a vampire I never hope to see one But I can tell you my desire I’d rather see than be one! Such a strange manifestation of the human psyche. Vampire stories always left me cold. Ha!

I have such great memories of that show. Coming home from school and watching it every day before I did my homework. It was my introduction to the gothic genre, I think. It was so corny and ill-produced, but fun and funny, too. I can still here the theme song with the crashing waves …

Dododoooooooo Dark Shadows, LOL I am trying to find the the dvd set of Dark Shadows, if you know where I might venture to find them, let me know. Yes I couldn’t wait to get home from school to watch it and always remember being miffed when Barnabas wasn’t featured that day, I truly felt cheated, LOL. You’re so right it was rather ill produced but it was sooooo different from anything else on TV. Hey Susan, do you remember an old movie that was called “Torment” it was about a man who killed his wife and I think was messing around with another woman, hence the killing of his wife so he could marry the his mistress. Well anyway, he is in the process of getting marrier and the book the minister was reading from all of a sudden turns to the funeral service. There was also, I remember a scene where the wedding march was being played on the organ and all of a sudden there were a pair of ghost hands that also take over the foot pedals and begin playing the funeral march. Needelss to say, the mans bride ends up being pushed out of the lighthouse the same one the man pushed his first wife out. This movie scared the crap out of me but I’d love to find that one too. :)

You can get Dark Shadows on DVD at Amazon. There’s a whole series! What a great Christmas gift! That other old movie … it seems familiar. I wonder if you can rent it on Netflix. I’ll have to check.

Thanks Susan, I’ll check out Amazon and that movie was an old black and white. If you find anything on it before I do, let me know. :)

I will! Sounds creepy and good. Reminds me a little of “Gaslight.”

I too loved Barnabus—-even got his autograph (much shorter in person), but Spike put the sex back into biting.

I’ve read all the books in the “Twilight” series, at my 16 year old’s bidding! They really are worthwhile reads, if you’re looking for supernatural escapist lit with a lot of “dangerous man fascination” thrown in. I’m looking forward to the movie. (My daughter’s seeing it tomorrow.)

I have to tell you Susan… I read the first book and really and truly couldn’t believe i read the entire thing I thought it was so bad. It’s just a harlequin romance with teenagers in teh lead role and one of them a vampire. I probably wouldn’t have read the whole thing but i was home super sick that week and had no brain anyway. I thought maybe i was just to old so i had my 21 year old read it and she thought the same thing… super juvenile writing and a super cheesy storyline. And i love vampire stuff! I can’t believe they are comparing this series to the Anne Rice books.

You left one of the great vampires off of your list. It was Christopher Lee when he played Dracula. I can’t remember the title of that one. Dracula with Bela Lugosi scared the heck out of me as a child, but after seeing Christopher Lee, Lugosi seemed like a melodramatic caricature and not frightening at all.

I read all four books and found them all very good… and I read the majority of Anne Rice’s vampire collection Loved them, too. But I would not compare the two writers or the books at all.
