wOw Scenes: The Contents of Our Purses

Photo Essay

A purse is often a woman’s most constant sidekick. The contents of a woman’s purse? Often the absolute necessities. Lesley Stahl, Liz Smith, Judith Martin, Joni Evans, Julia Reed and Mary Wells spill theirs for wOw. Take a peek …

I think that women should include a bit of self-esteem and pepper spray in their purses, and be able to tap into both when they need to be Ditching Mr. Wrong.

Liz and I are twins! i HATE purses! But where do you put yoru phone Liz? That’s the one downside to not liking a purse is the damn phone! my car keys are the flat (look like a credit card) remote kind and I usually take one piece of plastic. then i’ve got that darn bulky blackberry. SOOO… i hate to tell you that I just bought (last week) what the cute young woman at the nordis counter called a “wristlet”. It’s a little wallet sized thing that hangs off my wrist. it’s more of a wallet than a purse but fits my blackberry. I LOVE it. It holds just exactly enough. my drivers license (which i was usually without before) my credit cards, one skinny little colored burts bees lipstick, my car keys and my phone.

Dear Honeychild: I hate carrying cell phones. If I have to I clip one on my belt. Or I jam it into a shopping bag and let it bounce around. But I try to keep my hands free. I have also been known to stick extra money in my sock. Like Judith Martin, I am usually never anywhere without a book. Nice to hear from you. Liz

Speaking of spill the goods, Liz, whatever happened to the WoW readers’ refrigerator shots? We sent them in a couple months ago, and I only recall seeing the celebrity contributors’ photos, no one else’s.

EKA, You have landed on a great idea! We need to buy a wow canvas tote for groceries or something. In fact, we need a whole line of WOW bags in great colors!

Dear EKA: You can buy these bags from Longchamp. In NYC, this French firm has a store on Madison Avenue in the 60s. But the bigger collection that has every color combination imaginable and you can embroider in any way you choose is on line: http://www.eboutiquelongchamp.com/catalog/sac3_en.php?aleat=1587&cat=28&… They are expensive ($140ish), take 4 weeks to get from Paris, but they last FOREVER, they are washable, and —- if you are strong enough— you can practically fit a car inside. (We are working on manufacturing wOw bags in the near future.) Best, JONI

I like the soft-pink lipstick you wear. I much prefer soft as opposed to the red on women.

Barnes & Noble have their great ‘shopping bags’ on sale right now. I have 5 of them that were $1.50 each. I use them whenever I shop and have been amazed at how much they hold. On the subject of “purses,” I gave them up when I was working by having my tailor put an inside pocket in all of my jackets and blazers (yes, like men’s), which enabled me to slip in a DL, credit card, and a few bills. My cell was on speaker/mic in my car, and in a pant or skirt, dress pocket ( also ‘added’ if needed to be by tailor. Having his menswear expertise made a whale of a difference in the “pocket” design so it didn’t bulge, etc. My brief case/or brief-envelope held what I couldn’t - and yet I hated putting personal items in that, since it was once the reason my car windows were smashed…and my briefcase stolen, in a “secure” parking garage. I merely forgot that it was on the back seat.

Three of you have more than one cell phone in your purse…why? Joni- Love that you have a ballcap in there with your pumps.

Used to do the no bag thing - especially when going out to clubs and dancing, had a business card case with a $20, an American Express and my Driver’s License. Now I seem to carry more and I’m not sure why, phone that I try to avoid, pills that I wish I didn’t need, my husband’s glasses because he forgets them - I think it is time to cut back again.

From a man’s perspective…I’ve always had a wallet in my back pants pocket, keys in the left-front pocket, and a comb and loose change in the right-front pocket. If I’m on a business call, I put one of those tiny notepads in the upper shirt pocket, along with a pen. On those rare occasions where I wear a sportscoat, I’ll keep that stuff in the jacket, along with business cards and kleenex, perhaps a mint.
