The wowOwow Best Dressed List: Ten Degrees of Basic Black

Photo Essay

The writer Alison Lurie equates color in dress with tone of voice “in that it can completely alter the meaning of what is said by other aspects of costume: style, fabric and trimmings.” As the economic roller coaster continues to haunt the news, voices deepen. What to wear? According to retailers, black always sells best in an economic downturn, and so this week it was that black with a showing of gray and white — technically black, white and gray are not colors but represent the absence of light — was the color field chosen by the best-dressed. But since black is such a dramatic color, it can be played in many ways, as the ten women on our list show.

I am so sensitive to color that I can only take intense colors in small amounts, so I wear very neutral colors most of the time. Black, taupe, black and white, cream maybe a scarf with some color in it or a piece of jewelry. I prefer to observe lovely, intense colors as I pass them, not be wrapped in them for an entire day. The other day I put on an deep, teal t-shirt under a black hoodie and had to replace it with a taupe t-shirt because I was not in the mood for the teal, I could almost feel it through my skin! I know, it’s a bit crazy. Even my home needs to be pretty neutral with a splash of color here and there… a stained glass piece in the window, a pumpkin orange candle, etc. because color can effect my moods and either thrill me or irritate me, depending upon the particular color and my state of mind at any given moment.

Basic Black? I can’t say I ever saw her wear it, but if she did, you would see one of the best dressed women on the planet - Barbara Walters. The best coordinated dresser I have ever seen. Her natural ability of putting fashionable clothes, colours and accessories together is nothing short of incredible.

I always feel pretentious in black. Browns and beiges are better for me. But honestly, bold prints and bright colors…my fave.

I love basic black. It´s my trademark. I wear black every day, sometimes combined with blue jeans or black pants and a white top - but always something black. I love being dressed in black from head to toe … with just one splash of color (usually red). It makes me feel cool and confident … aaand it makes me look slim!

I am a blue girl, closet is half full in royal blue. Black washes me out, I mean a complete wash out.

I am most comfortable in black and wear it every day — dressing up or dressing down. Have done so all my adult life. Will wear a bright shell or interesting scarf, if I feel the inspiration, or on occasion, a patterned but neutral skirt or slacks, but black’s for me. Quiet. Simple. LIke peaking out from behind a door. I see all, but little can be seen of me.

Black is such an easy choice any day of the week or season or event. It just works. And it is fabulous for travelling. Back in my modelling days I could throw everything I own that was black in a bag and be out the door in minutes. I knew that I could create a dressy look or a casual look out of anything I had grabbed. I would just put on more casual footwear to go to the studio and then later on, attach shoulder-duster bejewelled earrings and stronger lipstick and a great jacket, then hit the best restaurants.

I can not believe Arlene Dahl looks so great! She has always been so beautiful..(even in Playboy years ago, or especially in Playboy). Love the black and white the queen is wearing. It looks so good with her glorious hair.
