On '60 Minutes': Getting to Know Vice President Joe Biden (Video)

Lesley Stahl

He is the man often ridiculed for his loose lips. Now, the White House calls Vice President Joe Biden’s exuberance an asset. They call it truth telling. Biden and President Obama aren’t just yin and yang, they’re diametric opposites.

On this Sunday’s "60 Minutes," I’ll talk with Biden about the differences between him and our commander in chief, our president’s much-talked-about handshake with Hugo Chavez and more, giving you the chance to get to know Biden better. I’ll also interview his wife, Jill Biden, and the vice president’s boss, President Barack Obama. Watch the video below for a sneak peek at my interview, and then tune in to "60 Minutes" on Sunday night.

"60 Minutes" airs on CBS Sunday at 7 PM ET/PT.

This is not so much an article as a commercial for 60 minutes.

That’s a political opinion, Kell…right or wrong. But personality-wise, I enjoy hearing the personal stories about these folks. Heck, I didn’t even mind Nixon or Bush-II, if you’re talking about the person, not the politics. To get where these folks are at, there’s always an interesting story.

Hi Lesley,

The last time I regularly watched 60 Minutes was in my parent’s home. We had a 5 bedrm, 3 bath, formal living rm/dining rm. family rm/laundry room golf course/swimming pool oriented home…with ONE TV and our parent’s FIRMLY in charge of the remote control. Since then I’ve not been too much oriented to TV. So thank you for the heads up on your piece. IT WAS EXCELLENT. You asked tough questions and I felt MUCH BETTER KNOWING THAT BIDEN IS THERE DOGGING THE PREZ RATHER THAN BEING A LAPDOG. I wouldn’t have watched, except that you recommended it. EXCELLENT JOB…I REALLY enjoyed it!

Keep being out there and real, Joe! LOVE YOU! And SO APPRECIATE THAT YOU ARE OUR VP!! And fulfilling an absolutely critical role as watchdog.

Lesley, three days with Joe Biden?  I’m sure you had some interesting moments and a generally good time.  Joe Biden may not be everyone’s cup of tea but in the best of ways he is to the White House what Princess Diana was to Buckingham Palace - his appeal is that he is tangible, his word can be trusted and he is passionate about real people.  Like the princess he is very much a People’s VP.

E. I agree that we need the people who upset the apple cart rather than the one’s who blindly go along with everything. Ms. Stahl’s interview was EXCELLENT, truly appreciated it.

I VOTED FRO BARACK WHEN HE PICKED UP JOE  FOR HIS RUNNING MATE.    BUT     I HAVE HEARD SINCE  THTA JOE IS THERE WITH HIS MOUTH GLUED SHUT WITH FURNACE TAPE  ATTATCHED TO IT AS WELL.  I DO BELIEVE IF JOE COULD TALK  THEN THINGS COULD POSSIBLY LOOK DIFFERENT

If that were true he wouldn’t make an appearance on 60 minutes. He’d be kept hiding in the background

I saw you on O’Reilly the other night Miss Stahl and I found you to be very thoughtful and open to opinions - you did not immediately dismiss anything and am taking a watch and see attitude as to what is happening with this new administration.

I also heard that you were one of the founders of this site and I was just wondering if it was intedended to be a ‘Democrat’ only site? It is what it appears to be and I was wondering if Wow might not be more a much better site for women by presenting all sides of a view - not just one as it seems to do now.

I’d like to address canuck’s query about this site being more liberal than conservative. The majority of the founders appear to be liberal, although Peggy Noonan certainly isn’t. This fact, however, should not deter good political debates if indeed debates they be, but sadly, the discussions revert to anger and frustration. Part of the problem, I think, is that we have certain people that only post on political threads. We don’t get to know them as women,(or men) as many of us here have gotten to know one another. So respect during contentious arguments goes out the window. I, for one, do not think that people here who obviously detest Obama and his administration are in any way racists. I  do however deplore the dismissal of anything  and everything he and his administration does. If one starts out with that premise, then debates are out the window and all you get are rantings and ravings.

Phyllis, I agree with your point about certain people only posting on political threads.  The flip side of that is that I sometimes would like to post on a political thread, but don’t, because I know the conversation will inevitably turn irrational and ugly.  I try to be open minded and see both sides of an issue.  Both sides are guilty of being close minded and ugly sometimes.  I saw the thread that was removed.  That was just uncalled for.

I guess it is that I have been quite taken back by the utter intollerance of some. Everything eventually gets tossed as ‘racist’ and I resent this. America has come a long way and my greatest concern regarding Obama has always been his lack of experience. I want him to be a successful president - it is more important than ever that he not be a Carter because he has broken ground that some of us never thought we would see in our lifetime. However, I was a staunch democrate until the Carter admininistration (supported the first term). Morals are important to me and that is all I will say about it. I will always support the candidate who will best serve what I beleive to be important to me. However this being said all of the anger and the accusations coming from some Democrats certainly upset me and they are not good examples of any political party. I have seen it from the Republicans as well but I have to say it is much worse the other way. As women we have come a long way in the world and just because we support one or the other does not mean we should hate each other. I think it is the degree of this hate that I cannot understand. Must be my old age.

I really like this site but I would like to see more fairness in reporting. After 911 I relied on Bush to keep us safe and he did that. Did I agree with everything? No, but I think this site can do better than putting up ridiculous pictures of folks that some of us still have great regard for. As well there has to be a middle line as a news site this one should be walking if there is fairness in reporting. If we cannot rely on our news sources (and we sure can’t on telelvision and radio anymore) to promote truth and fairness then who do we look to? This site above all others should hold itself up to good reporting and fair articles. Enought with the flowers and spears already.

Likewise!  Although the thread that I referred to as being "uncalled for" was, I think, from someone of a more consesrvative persuasion.  But, yes, it definitely goes both ways and I find it equally offensive either way.  I am an independant, and have voted for an Independant candidate, but I have also voted for both Republicans and Democrats.  Even when my preferred candidate does not get elected, I accept the fact that the majority voted the other way and get on with my life.  I can only wish whoever wins success.  To do otherwise would be to wish failure upon my country and that would be foolish.  But if we did not have both Democrats and Republicans, then we would not have the two party system we supposedly value so much.

Now there would be something to debate Deena! My hubby and I became American citizens in the ’80s but were prout Canadians before that! I know a lot and would have a lot to say about a government with more than a two party system! I know this is off topic but I actually like the two party system better. Thank you for having such calm and indepth insight into things Deena. I am always of the thought that we are so lucky to live in a free society. We do not have to agree with each other but because we are free we can surely give the respect due to those whose opinions differ from ours.

I am a 60 minutes fan and have been for many, many years.

Canuck, I agree that a two party system should be quite sufficient.  I am mainly an independant in the sense that I cannot call myself strictly Republican or Democrat.  I have somewhat "liberal" views about some things and more conservative views about others.  So I don’t fit neatly into any one slot.

Both parties leave a lot to be desired and have left me feeling alienated.  We have seen corruption on both sides.  I want to excercise my right to vote.  By voting for an Independant candidate I am trying to send a message to the major parties that I am not happy with business as usual.  Call it a protest vote.  I’m pretty much a lone voice in the wilderness but that’s OK.
