Health-Care Reform, AARP | 08/11/2009 9:40 am

AARP's Health-Care Stance Stirs Controversy Among Members; Obama to Set Record Straight at NH Town Hall Meeting

Some AARP members don’t agree with the national advocacy groups seemingly pro stance on Obama’s health-care plan. Meanwhile Obama will face questions tonight at Portsmouth, NH.

AARP, the national advocacy group dedicated to addressing the needs of senior citizens, has stirred controversy among its members for its seemingly pro-health-care stance.

FOXNews.com reports that some seniors are starting to protest AARP for its apparent support of President Obama’s health-care plan. Some have even torn up their membership cards and written scathing letters to the group’s CEO. AARP has launched a huge multimillion-dollar ad campaign to push for reform now — not later — and to dispel any myths out there about what exactly reform will do.

"It’s critical that people have the information about the proposals currently being debated in Congress," said AARP spokesman Drew Nannis. "There is a lot of misinformation out there, and people need to make decisions based on accurate information, not myths, lies and scare tactics."

While AARP tries to clear the air, Obama will be addressing misconceptions tonight at a New Hampshire town hall meeting. And it seems inevitable that protesters will abound outside. One of them, Jane Aitkin, told MSNBC this morning that many people are leery of too much government involvement and nationalization of the health-care system.

"Right now people just don’t seem to like this is being shoved down our throats without any dialogue," she said.

The White House also launched a new section of its website Monday, "Reality Check," to counteract some of the criticism of Obama’s health-care plans.

The amount of misinformation and outright lies on this subject is staggering.

I agree FP, a  neighbor who is Evangelical gave me a CD to listen to that was being handed out at her church, it had everything from Obama not being a US Citizen to lies about the health care situation.  I could not believe the brainwashing normally good intelligent people fall for.    They are using religion as a tool for hate.  What is wrong with these people? Are they trying to start another Civil war?  It’s really sad.

Heidi, those types of churches are giving christianity a bad name. The pastor at the Episcopalian Church I attend actually spoke about it being the ‘christian’s duty’ to care about the healthcare needs of their fellow citizens EVEN if their own personal situation is fine just the way it is.

Hi DeBurca,  Thing is, she is a retired Police Officer (former Catholic) who was wounded on duty (not shot) and is on SS Disability as well as getting her pension.  Correct me if I am wrong but isn’t SS disability and Gov run program? When she asked me what I thought of the CD I told her "It would make Jesus weep it is so hateful."  Don’t think she liked that much.  So much for convincing me huh?  Most of these people who are against the healthcare program have NO IDEA what they are even protesting against!  That CD was presented in the form of a sermon.  Made me sick.

MK, here is HR3200 as it stands now. http://www.examiner.com/x-12837-US-Headlines-Examiner%7Ey2009m8d10-Health-care-bill-HR-3200-read-it-online-now

I am dropping this link in random places since this is the only thread pertaining directly to the bill.  A shame that the masthead won’t post it for all to see.

AAHCA – Health Care Bill - however, there is much, much more to be done before the public needs to even think about reacting. They need to learn 5th grade civics!

Re:   http://docs.house.gov/edlabor/AAHCA-BillText-071409.pdf The Internet is full of mind-boggling amounts about a proposed health care law. However, if you know anything about how Washington works, this is not out of the ordinary.  Every legislator tries to legislate his/her point of view, and has staff members who labor mightily to get everything in and keep all the loopholes closed. I don’t pretend to be expert on any of this—however a few points are worth making. — The document referred to is NOT a final law.  It is one of several House of Representatives proposals.  There are other proposals from the House and from the Senate.  So do not take this as a law.  The final bill (if there is one) will be MUCH different. — The starting point for all these proposals is that everyone seems to agree that our current health care system is inadequate, leaves out millions of uninsured (who cost extra when they seek treatment in emergency rooms, or are not cared sufficiently or at all), is increasingly unaffordable by companies who are cutting benefits, and increasingly expensive for those who are lucky enough to be insured.  People with pre-existing conditions, people who lose their jobs and their health care are SOL under the present "system" – which is a "for-profit" system, after all, and of course insurance companies don’t want to insure high-risk patients. — So, politicians are trying to figure out a way to cover all (or most) individuals, which will improve the nation’s health and welfare and economy.  But one has to remember that this is a POLITICAL process, which means many different points of view have to be accommodated.  The result is bound to be an unsatisfactory compromise.  — The writer of a summary of the H.R. Bill is a self-described "common man," Peter Fleckenstein, a right-wing blogger.  He has an axe to grind; people who read his summary should be aware of his biases.  The internet is full of self-appointed "experts."  Always try to check facts and sources. — Not everything he says is correct, and much is "spun" to reflect his biases.  For example, he claims that the "government has a say in how your life ends."  This is nonsense.  The section of the Bill he refers to merely permits payment to physicians for CONSULTING with patients about "advance care planning."  As is the case now, a physician can consult or counsel you about living wills, appropriate care for you in terminal illness, hospice alternatives, etc.  The "order" that Fleckenstein refers to is merely a (deliberate?) misunderstanding of a common term used in hospitals – that is, for example, if you request that no extreme measures be taken to sustain your life (ventilator, etc.), that is known as a "do not resuscitate order."  That is, it is an "order" that YOU (or if you are incapacitated, your spouse/family/or other designed person) have notified your physician and the hospital of your wishes.  There is no "government order" controlling how your life ends. Do you really believe anyone (those darned liberals?) wants to institute euthanasia?  (First, they’d have to look up the word.)  Euthanasia is ILLEGAL.  Period.  This is just right-wing scare tactics — which you will hear stated as fact again and again. — Incidentally, even Fleckenstein says "There’s been an mass/chain email going around about my tweets on the Health Care Bill.  The problem with this email is that it misquotes what I actually said.  It also makes things up that were never in my tweets as well."

— So, you have to read everything you get with a skeptical mind.  Who wrote it?  Why was it written?  As I have said before, ALWAYS be skeptical.  Think for yourself.  Be politically aware.  Don’t take things at face value.

I think the worst thing that I’ve ever heard was Dick Armey on Meet the Press today. Everything he yelled out was untrue! Absolutely false! How that man can stay in Office is beyond me. We’ve had enough of him ‘up to here’ for years in Texas, and he should be removed, now.

C jay,

You stated "Be politically aware" and also asked "How that man can stay in Office is beyond me. We’ve had enough of him ‘up to here’ for years in Texas, and he should be removed, now."

Well color yourself politically comatose C jay because Dick Armey has not served in Congress since January 2003.

Yah, Leigh, I’m stupid! Happy? To say ‘it’ was slip of the dictation in my adaptive software, for not re-playing it is no excuse - he’s still dangerous.

And, Leigh - wake up. We have so many in Texas who "should be removed from office …" it’s difficult now to separate the wheat from the … " or whatever they appear to be - CORN, minimally!

C Jay and Leigh - move off the personal attacks and keep to the topic of the article.  Agree to disagree or move on.

Agree! It was done without my awareness - personal attack that is. Sorry Leigh. If I do not double-check what I dictate, I’m in trouble.
