Murder of Dr. George Tiller | 06/01/2009 10:20 am

Abortion-Rights Groups: Dr. George Tiller Was a 'True Hero' for Women's Rights

Controversial late-term abortion doctor is gunned down in church Sunday; suspect to face murder charges today.
By The Staff at wowOwow.com

The cold-blooded murder of controversial Kansas abortion doctor George Tiller has stunned the country — even those most ardently opposed to his practice — and abortion-rights groups are lamenting his death as a great loss for women’s health.

Feminist Majority called Tiller, one of only a handful of doctors in the U.S. that perform late-term abortions, "a true hero for women’s rights and lives." Added Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund:

Dr. Tiller was the epitome of high quality medical care underscored by deep compassion for his patients … Dr. Tiller provided critical reproductive health-care services, including abortion services, to women facing some of the most difficult medical circumstances … His death is an enormous loss for the patients who relied on him, his dedicated staff, and the medical community. And it is also a loss for each of us for whom Dr. Tiller represented courage against unbelievable adversity.

Tiller was shot to death just after 10 AM Sunday in the lobby of his church in Wichita as his wife sang in the choir. Scott P. Roeder, 51, of Johnson County, KS, will face charges of first-degree murder today in the Sunday shooting of Tiller. Roeder is known in antiabortion circles as a man who believes that killing an abortion doctor is justified if it saves lives of the unborn, and was a member of an anti-government group in the 1990s. President Obama was "shocked and outraged."

"However profound our differences as Americans over difficult issues such as abortion, they cannot be resolved by heinous acts of violence," Obama said.

Tiller, 67, survived a shooting outside his clinic in 1993, had his clinic burned down, had many threats to his life and was recently under investigation. Anti-abortion groups are condemning Tiller’s murder, saying they never encourage violence in abortion protests and extremists are to blame for such violence. Even Operation Rescue, deemed fringe by some, said the violence is shocking.

"Operation Rescue has worked for years through peaceful, legal means, and through the proper channels to see him brought to justice," the organization said. "We denounce vigilantism and the cowardly act that took place this morning. We pray for Mr. Tiller’s family that they will find comfort and healing that can only be found in Jesus Christ."

To stem any future violence as a result of this shooting, the U.S. Marshals Service has ramped up protection of certain abortion clinics and doctors, reports The Washington Post. Though they won’t detail exactly what clinics or doctors those may be, one likely choice is Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, which provides abortions and reproductive health services in the three states, even flying doctors in to perform abortions.

Dr. Warren M. Hern, director of the Boulder Abortion Clinic and a close friend of Tiller’s, who himself has been the target of threats and violence, called his colleague’s death a "profound tragedy," but not unexpected amid "35 years of relentless and merciless" threats and "fanaticism" violence from anti-abortion extremists.

"We’ve lived with these kinds of problems for 35 years or more," Hern tearfully told MSNBC this morning, saying Tiller was only focused on helping women. "The anti-abortion people will stop at nothing — including assassination … We don’t have to invade other countries to find terrorists — they’re here, killing doctors who do abortions."

The taking of Tiller’s life for him performing his LEGAL job and him doing what he felt was right is just saddening.  I am heartbroken for his family. Even if him being murdered wasn’t unexpected by those that knew him, having it happen is an entirely different thing and there is little doubt that his murderer will face swift and exact punishment for his heinous crime.

George Tiller needs more than candlelight vigils

The doctor’s murder is domestic terrorism, and if our leaders don’t act boldly, there will be more violence

By Gloria Feldt

excerpt: "When it comes to decrying Tiller’s unspeakable murder, I want to hear it from Congress. I want to hear it from clergy, the medical profession, the media and civic leaders: "This kind of violation will not be tolerated. Period." I want to see leaders and people at the grassroots joining hands together in support of those who provide women with reproductive health services, including abortion. I want them to put the yellow armband on, to assume Tiller’s name as so many took on the Obama’s middle name, Hussein, when he was disparaged during the election. Doctors have a special responsibility. David Toub M.D, MBA, who provided abortions when he was a practicing physician in Philadelphia, told me, "This could have been any of us who provide or provided abortion services. I’m just as annoyed by some of my own colleagues and the American Medical Association who marginalized us and even looked down at anyone involved in providing abortion."

The silence overall from leaders so far has been deafening, as attorney and longtime Arizona volunteer for reproductive rights causes Leon Silver pointed out. And if our leaders remain silent, I can tell you with perfect assurance what will happen next. There will be more violence.

Dr. Tiller’s friends, family, patients, colleagues and the many pro-choice activists who have supported him over the years need the vigil in Wichita and those springing up elsewhere to mourn the 67-year-old doctor’s death and celebrate his exceptional life. The larger community of reproductive health professionals and activists, including those who bravely escort women safely into and out of health facilities for abortions, need to cry and hug and lift one another up on the wings of their convictions that they are doing God’s work, saving women’s lives in the fullest sense of the word. I am with them in spirit.

But when it comes to changing a culture that has marginalized abortion by shaming women and hounding, even murdering, the doctors and clinic staff who provide safe abortions, when it comes to changing a culture bent on shaming women who are, in all good conscience, making the most moral of personal decisions — candlelight vigils alone will never be enough."

Thank you DeBurca. I read the same article this morning and agree. It is time we removed this religious fervor out of politics and our lives. The man did women a service. These terrorist should be prosecuted as just that Hate crime terrorist. It is time for America to say enough.

James…not at all…

There are many conservative, pro-life feminist. Many support abortion with strict guidelines, for medical reasons. It is a fact that if women were truely "in control" of their bodies, they would protect themselves from unwanted pregnancies and insist that a sexual partner wear a condom.

That so many women boast of being "strong, in control feminists" and still aquiese to umprotected sex….that is the oxymoron here. If women took control of their bodies…less than 1% of abortions would be a factor.

Late term abortion does serve a needed service in many cases. However, in many more there are medical proceedures that can be done in utero now….there are many late term abortions given under less than "medical emergencies".

Regardless of the issue ..no one deserves to be killed over it. However, many are now using the actions of ONE sick man, as an excuse to implement "hate speech" and silence the America right to Freedom of speech.

Here is the real point….this situation will be used by the rabid left to demonize anyone with a dissenting view. These posts prove that point…people have immediately jumped to silence those that publically speak against the left agenda. Many have used this opportunity to begin a push to take away our rights to speak out.

What they forget about is that their rights will be taken right along with the others. It is obvious that this horrible murder will be used as propoganda for the left…instead of dealing with what is really is, the act of a sick and lost soul.

Unwanted pregnancies can - and do - occur, even with sexual protection, such as condoms. Frankly, I don’t think there will ever be a resolution to this issue, as people simply have fundamental differences over when human life begins, interpretations of the Bible, etcetera.

Essentially what we have in our land of the free is domestic terrorism on a ever growing scale. References to the American Taliban are not far off IMO

I feel for Dr. Tiller’s family, the pain that they must going through right now.  Dr. Tiller was well within his legal rights to provide the services that he provided.  He survived so many threats and to be gunned downed in his church.  Terrible.

Dr. Tiller believed that women should be allowed choices for their bodies, and he was killed for that.  Absolutely terrible.

If you disagree with abortion and you live in the US, you have the right to protest it.  You do NOT have the right to kill in order to prove your point.  Once you do that, you delete all the credibility out of your stance.  It reminds me of the PETA people who abuse people wearing fur.  While most PETA people are sane, there are the few who go out there and attack people wearing fur or eating meat.  They just come across as looney.

The perpetrator in this case set back the pro-life cause instead of assisting people in understanding it.  I hope they throw the book at him.

late term abortion?—-wow—what a hero. i agree, tiller, the baby killer didn’t deserve being murdered—and neither did the babies he killed—both were wrong…though, if he’d been aborted—maybe a lot of lives could’ve been saved

So, using your logic under stimulated, if the same had been done to W 100,000s of Iraqi lives could have been saved? See where that kind of thinking leads?
