Afghan's Karzai Orders 'Rape Law' Revision

Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai bowed to international pressure this week and instructed lawmakers to revise a so-called rape law.

That law, part of a larger piece of legislation, insisted men have a right to have sex with their wives whenever they wanted it, which many read as encouraging rape. Thus, two weeks after signing the law, Karzai’s done an about-face:

Now I have instructed, in consultation with clergy of the country, that the law be revised and any article that is not in keeping with the Afghan constitution and Islamic Sharia must be removed from this law.
Hundreds of people protested the law in Afghanistan this week, and even President Barack Obama spoke out about it, CNN reports. Said the president:
I think this law is abhorrent. We think that it is very important for us to be sensitive to local culture, but we also think that there are certain basic principles that all nations should uphold, and respect for women and respect for their freedom and integrity is an important principle.
We couldn’t agree more.

Forgot who signs your paycheck, Karzai?  Next time, don’t try to slip this kind of crap under the rug.  You now have a (powerful) woman in the position of Secretary of State of the United States… better play nice!

(Oh and by the way, reign in those people who are killing women who are protesting… you’re pretty close to a coup there, buckoh!  I don’t think we’ll put up with too much more of this!)

Good. This really had me so upset. This will not stop the Taliban but OKing it was unacceptable as far as I’m concerned. Can they go outside at will, probably not, small steps, but steps.

What a waste of lives and resources Afghanistan has been. We should NOT have dropped the ball there in order to invade and occupy Iraq.

Oh please! Karzai, the Unocal employee put in power to build a pipeline through Afghanistan, doesn’t care.  He’s a powerless puppet of The West and Big Oil.

People, look at his resume.  He’s a fraud!

A reporter interviewing young women at Kabul University arguably the most progressive institution in Afghanistan, were bewildered at the debate raging in Canada and Europe over the law. Almost unanimously women interviewed said it was not a good law but the western governments should not involve itself in their country’s cultural and religious affairs. http://crazybitchesrus.blogspot.com/
