President Obama on Leno | 03/20/2009 8:20 am

UPDATE: After Discussing Bonuses, Obama Makes 'Special' Gaffe on Tonight Show (Video)

Barack Obama traded jokes with Jay Leno last night when he appeared on "The Tonight Show." But not all of his jokes hit the mark.

Things went well throughout the entire interview, which largely revolved around the economy and AIG bonus outrage. Of the latter, Mr. Obama said he was "stunned" when he heard about the bailed-out company’s plans to pad its executives’ pockets. As for the economy, the president said Americans realize it will take some time to dig ourselves out of the mess, and he’s confident Treasury Secretary Geithner’s up to the task. He also insisted that he’s ultimately to blame for anything that goes wrong: "Look, I’m the president. Ultimately, it’s my responsibility. If I’m not giving [Geithner] the tools he needs, it’s on me.”

Despite the topics, Obama managed to keep the mood light, like when he and Leno discussed his children’s new dog and living in the secret service "bubble." One of his jokes, however, caused jaws to drop.

The president was discussing how he’s been practicing his famously bad bowling. His skills, he said, are at about those of the Special Olympics. The White House was quick to clarify that Obama meant no harm: "The president made an offhand remark making fun of his own bowling that was in no way intended to disparage the Special Olympics."

UPDATE: Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, whose son has Down’s syndrome, hit back at Mr Obama’s remark. Via the Daily Beast:

I was shocked to learn of the comment made by President Obama about Special Olympics. This was a degrading remark about our world’s most precious and unique people, coming from the most powerful position in the world.

These athletes overcome more challenges, discrimination and adversity than most of us ever will. By the way, these athletes can outperform many of us and we should be proud of them. I hope President Obama’s comments do not reflect how he truly feels about the special needs community.

Agreed!

Thanks, Libra Lady — that was 40 years ago (unbelieveable), but it seems like not many days go by that you don’t think of the child you lost.   But, the point is — I think this is a great opportunity to bring the consequences of these types of stereotypical comments/jokes out into the open and hopefully garner some resources to help special needs children.   I don’t care if it is political or not — and I doubt many parents of special needs children would care……the important thing is to get the visibility.   That’s what struck me as odd about the "dad’s" comments — the slamming shut of the window of some good being done as a result of the gaffe.

Libra, people with big egos, like Obama, are never good at humor.   In his way, I think he was trying to be funny.   And, he wasn’t.

I will repeat what I said above: Coming from Chicago and being married at one time to a Chicago guy who played basketball with the guys every week I can tell you exactly where that comment came from. The basketball court and playing with the guys. It is exactly the sort of trash talk/ banter that they say to each other on the court and Obama, talking sports and making fun of himself slipped and said it. There was nothing deeper than that to it. He will have to learn to not get too comfortable when talking in public, which he obviously became while talking sports with Leno.

Libra:  This is change we can all do without.

It’s easy to see why he needs a script and teleprompter all the time.

I wonder what Sarah Palin thought of that insensitive jab…

No doubt this was written by Rove or one of his ilk. One American president’s thoughtless verbal miscalculation undoubtedly cost lives and may have prolonged a war; it took years for the POTUS to acknowledge the consequences of his “bring it on” taunt hurled at terrorist enemies in the heat of a deadly war. The latest example of conversational fallibility by a Commander-in-Chief no doubt disappointed millions and genuinely wounded the sensibilities of some (I doubt Governor Palin was among them.) Obama’s gaffe was followed by an immediate and unqualified public apology, and seems likely to result in a number of beneficial, if unintended, consequences. So far as I am aware, no grieving family or mother, and certainly not Cindy Sheehan, has received a similar act of civility and compassion from Bush.

You are so wrong…President Bush, in tears addressed many families whose soldiers were injured or killed….his heart can out match obama’s any day of the week!!

But you keep spinning and using your talking points to divert how obama and his staff are screwing up daily.  you are doing a mighty find job!!!

Look I did not even vote for Oboma but this was an innocent remark that I myself may have said making fun of myself just like he was making fun of himself.  We Americans are never going to get out of this mess and stick together like brothers & sisters until be relealize that this pettyness is ridiculas.  Lets try to be adults he is human her is trying and lets face it he did not create this mess nor did Bush.  Greedy Americans created this problem and he is trying ti show Americans that you can relate to him and maybe he can feel our pain.  He does have two daughter who will grow up in this country that is broken right now.  Cut the crap and stop jumping all over the guy.

BRAVO! Barbara!  Petty is the key word here!

People are ‘on the edge’ these days, what with all the corruption and greed that has caused them to lose everything that is important to them—-and it WAS NOT under Obama’s watch!!!!!!!!  YET, Obama has to clean it up….and humore has ALWAYS been the medicine that distracts from the pains of disappointment and loss……

So lighten up you petty snarkers…he made fun of himself!  not you!  For as much as the hate-mongers here and in the media, make attempt to destroy Obama—-he STILL holds ‘political capital’ with the majority!  hahahahaha  I think that is funny, don;t you?  I am speaking to those whose sole purpose in life, over here, is to find fault, and blame against Obama…..I would like to see some of those whose words are picky-uni and hateful try to do what he is doing, and still have a sense of humore!  Based on what I read sometimes on these WoW boards…..I don;t think most could!

I mis-spelled that on purpose—-with emphasis on ‘picky’ and ‘one’
