AirFrance Crash Update: Little Hope of Recovering Data, Voice Recorders That Hold Clues (Video)

Pingers’ attached to flight recorders are crucial to finding out what caused most catastrophic crash in recent AirFrance history.

Everyone is looking for answers as to how, exactly, AirFrance Flight 447 with 238 people aboard could have gone down this week after it took off from Brazil, but unfortunately, it may be quite awhile before we get any.

After plane debris was found yesterday about 400 miles northeast of some Brazilian islands, Brazilian and French military planes are continuing the search. But Paul-Louis Arslanian, a French crash investigator leading that country’s investigation, said today that the flight data and voice recorders of the Airbus 330, which could contain vital clues as to what exactly happened in the sky, may be lost forever, since the plane presumably crashed in the middle of the ocean. But officials said there appeared to be no problems with the plane before takeoff Sunday.

One expert told The Guardian that the search for the data and voice recorders could be among the hardest recoveries since the search for the Titanic. The likelihood of survivors is also slim at this point, officials have said.

"If you think how long it took to find the Titanic and that the debris would be smaller, you are looking for a needle in a haystack," said Derek Clarke, who designs and builds military and commercial diving equipment.

When all is said and done, officials hope to have many more answers for the families and loved ones of those on board by the end of this month.

“Today, we don’t know what happened. It’s all pure speculation," said Arslanian. "Let’s let the real experts get to work. We will give the information as soon as we have it and we have confidence in it."

NASA also reported a storm nearby. Once again I am so saddened for the families of those lost.

Since the recorders are 12K to 20K deep they probably won’t be recovered. Man I hate flying.

I will probably be flying across the Atlantic in a few weeks and this doesn’t make me too thrilled about getting on a plane either!

Thanks S G! Wish me cheap tickets too OK!? Because the flight can’t be booked until at least Friday because I won’t know for sure if we’re going till then and the closer the time gets the more expensive I fear the tickets become.

I heard last night that the waters are up to 13,000 feet deep if not deeper…what a great miracle it would be if those boxes could be recovered or if they could find at least part of the plane in tact so these families can heal completely with answers.

I too am not one for flying…dont like it, never have, never will.  It may be the safest means of transportation but I dont like the fact if something goes wrong, you have nowhere to go, there is no escape or even an attempt to escape…you cant open the door and or bust out a window…just not for me.

Good Morning C and fp. I wonder if they could take the equipment used to find the titanic and get those boxes. I don’t know how far down the titanic is. Maybe the waters aren’t as deep. But I think those boxes need finding if possible for the families to know what happened. I know I would want to.

SG, I know they were going to deploy one of those little submarines b/c it was able to go 20,000 feet in the water but I know it takes hours to get to that depth.  I think it will be months before we know anything…my fear is that a terrorist group will come out and take credit for it b/c we wont know if that is true or not without the black box.

I am sure your right about it taking time. It is like a needle in a haystack I am sure. I certainly hope they do find it and end all speculation:)

Good morning, C Hardy, I’m not crazy about flying either…too many things can go wrong.    By the way, I’ll be at The Tides Inn Saturday and Sunday….so excited!

Deber…I have heard about The Tides Inn, I just looked them up…I may have to get my hubby to take me there for our 1year anniversary, looks beautiful!!!  I hope you have a great weekend!!!

You know I flew once from New Orleans here and had to make one stop in Ohio and leaving Ohio there was a thunderstorm and it was the scariest thing ever…After that I have flown once, from Richmond to Jacksonville, other than that, I have no desire to get on a plane unless its an emergency.  Too confined for me!

This is such a tragedy. It would be great if some of the technology developed by Bob Ballard for his explorations could be used for recovery of the black box.
