One can only imagine what American student Amanda Knox is going through, having to defend herself in her own murder trial in a foreign country.

Knox took the stand in Perugia, Italy, today, testifying that she was hit by police during questioning, and that she gave false statements to the police because she was "under pressure." The 21-year-old is accused of slitting the throat of her roommate, British citizen Meredith Kercher, before killing her. Kercher was also sexually assaulted in what prosecutors say was a sex game gone bad. Television cameras were allowed to tape the first five minutes of her testimony. Knox began her testimony in Italian. Her father had said she didn’t want to risk anything being misinterpreted in her key testimony if she spoke English.

Knox, a Seattle native and University of Washington student studying abroad, said she wrongly accused a local Congolese bar owner, Patrick Lumumba, because she was confused, and accused him "against my will." She said police "called me a liar and said I was trying to protect someone."

Knox and her Italian boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, are accused of taking part in the November 2007 assault of Kercher, who was later found semi-naked under a duvet in her blood-spattered bedroom. Rudy Guede, 20, a drifter from the Ivory Coast, was sentenced last October to 30 years for his role in the murder; he is appealing his conviction. Click here to watch video of today’s testimony.

In other international news, Iranian elections are underway, but there are no results as of this morning. Voter turnout was unprecedented — some reports said it could be up to 70 percent. A large part of that could stem from the fact many are fed up with current President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and are voting instead for former Prime Minister Mir-Hossein Mousavi Khameneh. Iranian youth are also driving this vote; they want change, better relations with the West and better economic conditions. If Ahmadinejad loses, it would be the first time in Iranian history a sitting president has lost re-election. Click here to watch video depicting the excitement over this election.

We wish good luck to the people of Iran and hope that their voices will be heard in this very important election.

The sleaze factor in the Knox case is off the register.  Over the months, the same details kept unraveling.  Drugs, kinky sex, arguments, changing stories, and " confusion" on Amanda’s part.  It’s not looking too good for Miss Knox.

Yep—when you’re dealing with foreign police, don’t look for pats on the back.  She’s not going to like Italian prisons at all.

If you do the crime you have to do the time!    On another note lets hope the Iranian people vote the current President out of office it will be a great victory for them and for Obama as that will show the world that his influence may have contributed to it as so many young Iranian people were engaged this time around.

The girl innocent or guilty is not up to us to say.  If she did it she deserves what ever she gets, if she didn’t , she should be let free.  I don’t trust the legal system all that much here let alone over seas..  Seen too many people get away with stuff and too many get convicted when innocent.  Can we say O J.

Being on trial in a foriegn country has got to be really scary for an American, they don’t get the same treatment over there that they do get here.

Here:  INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY

there: ALL UP TO THE POLICE/JUDGES

OJ simpson scumball that he is got a fair trial, because you don’t agree with the outcome…don’t knock the system. Americans are so stupidly arrogant. What’s wrong with Italy’s court system? It’s not ours but that does not make in inefficient or incompetent. Why are Americans always behaving inappropriately in foreign countries and then grousing about being tried in those countries?

Victoria,  this American will be judged by  3 Italian Judges, the famiy of the victim have a say, the lawyers have a say, there are so many people involved in the decision that she doesn’t stand a chance.  She has been verbally and allegedly physically abused by the police, who’s hands she’s been in for a long time.  She doesn’t know Italian law, where American chidlren are taught right and wrong according to the law from the time they hit middle school. She couldn’t even get bail, many a foreigner here in the U.S. has gotten bail, they may have to turn over their passport, or wear an ankle braclet, but they had the opportunity. At least here in America were judge by a collective group of people who are chosen by both sides of the case.  And yes OJ may have gotten a fair trial, but just like anywhere else in the world Popularity, Money and Influence can get you out of trouble as well as into trouble.  I personally know OJ from his time on the Buffalo Bills. I was a teenager and had been hit by a car while I was standing on the sidewalk by a drunk/druged driver.  He was a member of a group of athletes who went to local hospitals and help us learn to walk, use a wheelchair, etc. and get us back up and on our feet.   He kept in touch with my group of kids until he left the team.  He’s a nice man, when he wants to be, just like everyone else, and I personally feel from what I saw, read, and the evidence that he killed his wife and Mr. Goldman.

But my single opinion can not put a person in prision or sentenced to death.  Thus the nature of our legal system verses that other countries is the Better System.  Innocent until proven Guilty, not the other way around.  Protective custody means protection, not police violence.

No system is perfect but that of the United States I will say again far outways that of any other in the World.

Victoria one last thing I need to point out, the Italians have been trying to take over the world as far back in history you can go, right up to WWII, for some reason think their supior to everyone else, could it be because the Catholic Chruch,  who think their the moral cumpus of the world could be putting their two cents in??????????? There are too many factions involved in this trial, it wasn’t done all at the same time, it’s taken months where here it would have been done all at one time, not with wks and months in between sessions.

So would you want to be on trial here or in Italy?????

I’m sorry but with history and what I’ve read in the papers, on line and seen on the News that kid is in real trouble. And how did she end up with a fat lip,  can we say - cops.

First I don’t know whether the girl is guilty or not. The evidence will tell. As for Iran I believe it could be the begining of a new era. I believe the opposition will have to be physically put down. I think they will have an internal war. Hopefully leading to change for the people.

I hope this lady finds justice…It doesn’t matter who gets elected in Iran…the ‘supreme leader’ makes all the important decisions anyway…Mymood Iminajihad is just a figure head and so will anyone else that may take his place.

So did our supreme Leader Tricky Dick Cheney, but we changed all that in November 2008…there is still hope for the Iranians. Every significant change takes one step to begin that change.

The difference here is that Dick Cheney left with George Bush…The ‘Supreme leader’ in Iran only gets replaced when they die, or get overthrown (which usually ends with death) so, with all due respect, the comparison is weak.

I for one believe the girl (Knox) is innocent. Even if she is found guilty I think she had nothing to do with the murder of that poor girl.

There is a man already serving time for that murder, am I wrong?
