Roxana Saberi’s mental state may be deteriorating as she waits for her release from Iran’s Evin Prison.

The American journalist has been imprisoned for more than a month and a half. Her dad, Reza Saberi of Fargo, ND, worries about her, saying she is in a "dangerous" mental state. Roxana’s lawyer saw her Thursday, and remarked on Saberi’s condition. "Psychologically, she was in bad condition," reports Fargo’s InForum. "She was very disappointed and frustrated."

"She is under great psychological pressure and her condition seems to be dangerous now," Reza and Akiko Saberi — Roxana’s mother — wrote in an open letter to Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, asking for him to release their daughter. "We are very worried about her health and fear that something tragic may happen to her."

Iranian officials earlier this month said they would release Roxana soon, but, two weeks later, remain mum on the matter. Her lawyer tried to make a bail payment, Reza told Agence France-Presse, but was told that officials "cannot free her now." It could be several more weeks before the process moves forward, because Friday kicks off the Iranian New Year. Officials are urging the swiftest of actions.

"Securing Roxana’s release is of the utmost importance, and the beginning of the Iranian New Year on Friday brings an even greater sense of urgency," North Dakota’s congressional delegation wrote to the United Nations.

Perhaps a first step from Iran could be the release of this poor girl. My prayers are with her and her family.
