Ann Coulter Explains Palin's Exit

By Ann Coulter
© AP
Editor’s Note: Ann Coulter is a political commentator, syndicated columnist and bestselling author. Her latest book is Guilty: Liberal "Victims" and Their Assault on America.

I’m confused by all the confusion among the chattering classes about Palin. I thought her press conference explained it very clearly – though she couldn’t put it precisely this way without sounding vain, but it’s obvious.

Even though she’s just a state governor, she’s a HUGE national star who is both sought after and attacked as if she is already a president (a Bush, not an Obama). But she basically can’t participate because she’s tethered to the governor’s office up in Alaska. Consequently, she has to fight with one hand tied behind her back and she also can’t go around the country campaigning for candidates and principles she believes in – because she’s governor and would be accused of neglecting the state.

Meanwhile, the Lt. Gov. is a great guy, so she’s leaving the state in good hands and now she can go on to be an even bigger star.

It’s a weird Washington insider perspective to be perplexed by what she’s doing. Contrary to Mark Sanford’s e-mails to his mistress, no one was really impressed with him; 99.99999999999999999% of Americans didn’t know who he was.  Who is more influential: Rush Limbaugh, Matt Drudge and Bill O’Reilly, or Tim Pawlenty, Bobby Jindal and Mark Sanford (before the fall)? As Palin said, God bless people who run for political office, but – and she didn’t say this part – she’s too  big to be a lame-duck governor stuck dealing with fishing licenses in Anchorage right now.

She’ll be much bigger now and can play on the national stage without constantly setting off state ethics investigations by loons, parasites and liberals. None of this applied to McCain or Kerry – both of whom went back to the Senate – because their national campaigns diminished them. Palin’s national campaign made her a major star. As she said, she’s not retreating, she’s advancing in another direction.

Thanks for replying. I care about the country too, and Palin is not someone I agree with on many issues, so…okay, difference of opinion politically, no problem. It will be interesting to see if your prediction comes true. From my point of view, I don’t think she can really do much to affect the situation in the lower 48 or help others get elected. I think her presence sank McCain’s ship, to be honest, so I can’t see career politicians asking for the help of such a polarizing figure. And, well, I still don’t see that this course of action is so radical or such a dire emergency that she couldn’t finish out her term. I am really hard-pressed to see her as this miracle-working savior figure for the nation.

The only difference between Sarah Palin and Kate Gosselin is three kids and a haircut.

New to this web site, please pardon the inexperience. Newly politically interested because I am fearful of where this country is headed, I have been reading my hiney off to try and figure out how to make a change. One thing I have learned: those who think left for some reason need to say ugly and vicious things about people whether it is true or not. I don’t understand the anger and vicous names. Good grief you have everything you want! Frankly, I think the reason Palin was harrassed so, is that the political hate mongers on the left wanted her gone, very gone, because she was a threat and somehow they had to keep looking, or make something up to make her life impossible. Now, if she had done illegal things, I would want to know about it, but the more they tried nothing ever came up. The double standard that takes place is simply unbelievable, and outrageous. Whatever her "higher calling" is, she left Alaska in good hands and had the approval of all that mattered. As for me, the statement I heard from one of the Wasillans describes her pretty good and convinced me that she can accomplish whatever she sets out to do. He said she was "fearless" and that sums it up pretty good. And protective too, like a mother bear watching over her cubs. Why is it that the gloves were off on her children?

At this time I will confess that for too long I have been apathetic and didn’t get involved in politics. I voted the person I believed in but that is all I was willing to do. However, this last election opened my eyes and my mind. When I had to vote for a person that I did not like just so I could try to keep another from winning, I knew it was time for me to get my *#!^ off the couch and get involved or my children and grandchildren would not have the America I lived to enjoy. I am sick and tire of titles. I am not a Republican or a Democrat. Call me independent and I think our numbers are rising.  And by the way…I think Coulter is right.

Laura-

Thank you for your post. After reading 30 minutes worth of this thread and another thread, I think your post pretty much nails it. The Independents are rising and if people want to know why well look at the administration that we have right now.

I can tell you that this past election open my eyes and mind. Some of my friends became Independents and they were staunch Democrats. The Democratic Party did change and many have seen the change and no longer wants to be associated with it. It’s not recognizable anymore.

I post ‘conservative’ but you would be surprised to learn that I am a registered Democrat.  Yes!  In my state, you have to declare a party to vote in the Primary Elections…so I stay, a ‘D’ in registration only.  To paraphrase Ronald Reagan, ‘I didn’t leave the Democratic party…the Democratic party left me!’

If I didn’t miss out on half of the elections here in PA, I would register as an Independent (and I know many, many disgruntled types here…in Blue PA…who are p’od as well!!!)

Queenie .

MQC. that would kill me to actually have to register as a D when I didn’t believe in it or want to.  I stand in the flames of fire in my precint and say "R".  I too am heading for Independent or Libertarian——

Im from Chicago—-bho land, a.k.a. boo hoo ooh.

Laura Orr — You are spot on!  "Why is it that the gloves were off on HER children"?  I seem to recall that the present administration has requested that not only "keep the gloves off the children" but also the FLOTUS

The Independent numbers are indeed rising.  I was once a Democrat - back when there were true Democrats - left the party long ago and became an Independent and will remain so!  I became strongly involved in politics some time ago.  Now, I’m involved even more strongly than before.  This past week I attended the Tea Party in my area - 5,000 people were there.  And, regardless of what the Democrats think - there ARE many Democrats in attendance.  Some have now proclaimed themselves as Independents.  People are after the same things you have expressed - they want answers - they are tired of managed news, managed news condferences - managed speeches - and, many expressed the desire to be able to watch the news WITHOUT seeing the face, yet again, of this President.  He is everywhere.  Just like a political campaign that has no end in sight.  They are tired of the same tax and spend.

I personally believe that Sarah has been offered an opportunity to do more - to campaign more.  If you took her speech apart you would see that trend.  If anything I think Sarah will come out swinging — after all, what more can they throw at her that they haven’t done already?  When she says she has the full support of her family - well, I think we will definitelty be seeing more of Sarah Palin.

I’m glad to see that you are becoming involved - stay in the fight.

All of this hatred from elements of the Left wing and compulsion to destroy is culminating into something… I beleive.

All of our rights are at risk.

well, apparently you two are two crazy women. You defend Alaska’s soon to be ex-gov, and you?  Just a has-been on the credibility stage.  We don’t like either of you so maybe you could just hold her hand while she goes down in flames.

Janet Barker — Apparently you aren’t reading the correct thread - crazy would be Nancy Pelosi! And, this thread isn’t about her!
