Ann Coulter Explains Palin's Exit

By Ann Coulter
© AP
Editor’s Note: Ann Coulter is a political commentator, syndicated columnist and bestselling author. Her latest book is Guilty: Liberal "Victims" and Their Assault on America.

I’m confused by all the confusion among the chattering classes about Palin. I thought her press conference explained it very clearly – though she couldn’t put it precisely this way without sounding vain, but it’s obvious.

Even though she’s just a state governor, she’s a HUGE national star who is both sought after and attacked as if she is already a president (a Bush, not an Obama). But she basically can’t participate because she’s tethered to the governor’s office up in Alaska. Consequently, she has to fight with one hand tied behind her back and she also can’t go around the country campaigning for candidates and principles she believes in – because she’s governor and would be accused of neglecting the state.

Meanwhile, the Lt. Gov. is a great guy, so she’s leaving the state in good hands and now she can go on to be an even bigger star.

It’s a weird Washington insider perspective to be perplexed by what she’s doing. Contrary to Mark Sanford’s e-mails to his mistress, no one was really impressed with him; 99.99999999999999999% of Americans didn’t know who he was.  Who is more influential: Rush Limbaugh, Matt Drudge and Bill O’Reilly, or Tim Pawlenty, Bobby Jindal and Mark Sanford (before the fall)? As Palin said, God bless people who run for political office, but – and she didn’t say this part – she’s too  big to be a lame-duck governor stuck dealing with fishing licenses in Anchorage right now.

She’ll be much bigger now and can play on the national stage without constantly setting off state ethics investigations by loons, parasites and liberals. None of this applied to McCain or Kerry – both of whom went back to the Senate – because their national campaigns diminished them. Palin’s national campaign made her a major star. As she said, she’s not retreating, she’s advancing in another direction.

I dont recall anyone except the right-wingers making fun of Hilary for her looks, cankles, and "masculine" pantsuits. i remember the right had that under control and poked fun at Hilary day in and out, basically pointing out that she worked hard and that was "masculine". i’m not sure if they were trying to make a point about her not being woman enough, or trying to be a man, or if they were trying to insinuate that she was gay, but they liked to smirk afterwards.

and i also recall that John McCain told a disgusting joke about Chelsea Clinton in front of reporters, "Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno."

that certainly shows what the right finds humorous: lesbianism, the physical appearance of women (especially young women) which he thinks is OK to make fun of if he does not find them sexually attractive.

the left has enough political ammo to destroy palin, they have no need to go after her silly eye winks and redneck-esque one liners and terms… they just couldn’t help themselves when the opportunities are so obvious.

Amanda so just b/c some Republicans did it to Hilary and McCain made a bad joke about Chelsea it makes all the jokes and hateful stuff said about Palin and her family ok?  Two wrongs dont make a right…

I wasn’t trying to make a point about making anything right, or trying to one-up someone.

there’s a big difference between a self-proclaimed moral Christian man (McCain) making a joke onstage about an underage young lady insinuating her mother is a lesbian, and normal american citizens noticing that Palin is a hypocritical person.

I am just in awe of the jerks who endlessly harrassed Palin & her family in the obvious hopes of it coming to this very point (of her resignation), only to now criticize her for "abandoning" her post? Unbelievable! You got what you wanted, leave the woman and her family alone now. Sarah Palin is the kind of woman who answers first to her family and secondly to her career, if her career has put her family in jeopardy - which it very much has, considering that the hateful venomous spewing against her from the left has even begun targeting her daughters - I fully respect her decision to end it, though it is such a shame. I don’t agree you have to blindly support a woman politically just because she’s a woman (Lord knows I will be the first one to criticize Hilary), but it’s quite another thing to pursue her so relentlessly for her political opinions that the attacks become personal and hateful. Women are the primary reason that women are not on an equal playing field with men. We’re our own worst enemy, it’s sickening.

You got that right Melanie….at least the President’s family has secret service details to protect them from the hateful loons that would do them harm. Palin doesn’t get that type of comfort.

Well what gets me is when Clinton was in office, it was very poorly looked upon among the media to say something bad about Chelsea Clinton - she was "untouchable". I am certain they would say the same about Obama’s daughters, even if 4 years from now the older one got knocked up. If Letterman had said anything to the effect of what he said about Palin’s daughters, joking or not, you could bet he wouldn’t have a show anymore. But because its Palin’s daughters, the media is willing to defend him saying, "Hey, its just jokes!" As if that kind of joking on national television doesn’t completely humiliate and damage those girls. Yes, I know comedians make fun of child stars & whatnot also, and we can’t censor everything we say if it MIGHT hurt some kid’s feelings, but jeez child stars for the most part choose to be in the limelight. The Palin kids didn’t choose this, they are only in the media because of their parent’s job and they don’t deserve to be attacked personally like that. Women especially should be furious with David Letterman for his comments but they’ve been completely silent. Aren’t women’s groups supposed to protect the interests of women no matter what their political affiliation? Or do only those who support unlimited abortion on demand qualify as "women"? Seems so!

So why are Sarah Palin’s daughters fair game but Obama’s girls are off limits? Because they’re teenagers? Because they’re white? Because they’re Republicans by proxy? Same logic went with the Bush twins too - they were fair game as far as journalists were concerned, at least in the beginning. Anyone trying to deny this hypocritical double standard I invite you to answer that question!

You are right again Melanie…but they will not accept your invitation…they will just throw mud in another direction. It’s their mission statement…"get in their faces"…."cause discord"…just look up Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals…its all there..

Kelly In Texas…., gonna take you little missive and insert Mark Sanford in for sweetie Palin…so we can all really see how ridiculous THIS ODE TO INCOMPETENCE sounds.

The Washington has beens and wanna be’s just can’t quite believe that MARK SANFORD, A MUCH TOUTED PROBABLE PRESIDENTAL CANDIDATE FOR 2010  took away their sitting target. How dare HE do the unexpected and ruin their blood lust attack on a ON A GUY JUST LOOKING FOR HIS SOULMATE. Out foxed by a foxy politician…boy are they pissed!

Good for HIMHE controlled the only thing that HE does have control of…HIS LUST. I approve of HIS move, HIS family didn’t deserve THIS GUY, BUT SOUTH CAROLINA DOES deserve the full time attention of their FINE Governor.

And MARK….as always…you nailed it (MARIA)to the wall with one hit.

THE MEDIA just can’t fight fair…but then, MARK is what he learned to be. Hopefully, MARK will continue to inspire others with HIS  sense of family and country and enjoy some personal time that HE richly deserves.

They only thought that they had MARK SANFORD where they wanted HIM…..

Victoria, I have to say I’m very confused as to what point you are trying to make here. Obviously it is being critical of this article since you’re using passive-aggressive swipes like "sweetie Palin", but I don’t see what any of it has to do with Mark Sanford and how inserting Mark Sanford in for Sarah Palin in any way debunks what is said in this article? Please explain.

It’s bizarre, Melanie….just keep reading her posts…

Victoria…try to deal with what exactly it is that I support.

Palin is not my "sweetie", how silly…and unproductive, I might add. She was presecuted by the Obama controlled media and what was done to her should not be condoned. Ever. That’s it…the end.

Sanford is an idiot, Edwards is an idiot…the list goes on and one.

Your post is very strange…when have I ever supported Sanford, or Edwards? Never…so your point is???

Nothing. Zero. Zilch.
