Ann Coulter Explains Palin's Exit

By Ann Coulter
© AP
Editor’s Note: Ann Coulter is a political commentator, syndicated columnist and bestselling author. Her latest book is Guilty: Liberal "Victims" and Their Assault on America.

I’m confused by all the confusion among the chattering classes about Palin. I thought her press conference explained it very clearly – though she couldn’t put it precisely this way without sounding vain, but it’s obvious.

Even though she’s just a state governor, she’s a HUGE national star who is both sought after and attacked as if she is already a president (a Bush, not an Obama). But she basically can’t participate because she’s tethered to the governor’s office up in Alaska. Consequently, she has to fight with one hand tied behind her back and she also can’t go around the country campaigning for candidates and principles she believes in – because she’s governor and would be accused of neglecting the state.

Meanwhile, the Lt. Gov. is a great guy, so she’s leaving the state in good hands and now she can go on to be an even bigger star.

It’s a weird Washington insider perspective to be perplexed by what she’s doing. Contrary to Mark Sanford’s e-mails to his mistress, no one was really impressed with him; 99.99999999999999999% of Americans didn’t know who he was.  Who is more influential: Rush Limbaugh, Matt Drudge and Bill O’Reilly, or Tim Pawlenty, Bobby Jindal and Mark Sanford (before the fall)? As Palin said, God bless people who run for political office, but – and she didn’t say this part – she’s too  big to be a lame-duck governor stuck dealing with fishing licenses in Anchorage right now.

She’ll be much bigger now and can play on the national stage without constantly setting off state ethics investigations by loons, parasites and liberals. None of this applied to McCain or Kerry – both of whom went back to the Senate – because their national campaigns diminished them. Palin’s national campaign made her a major star. As she said, she’s not retreating, she’s advancing in another direction.

None of you cynics will be happy until Sarah Palin is both out of office and off the planet. It is entirely possible that she has become genuinely sick and tired of all of the HARRASSMENT the great American press has dumped on her. Just how many of you are completely enamored of the results of the last Presidential election. Who REALLY sees positive change so far. I just hope all of us recognize America when these four years are up and that we’re all still delighted to be living in "the land of the free(?) and the home of the brave.

Interesting, Mary — just think how nasty things would have gotten for Palin if she had not been a Republican — then Rush Limbaugh would have leashed his ascerbic diatrides on her.   I suspect the take away many will have from this is that Palin does not live up to her political responsibilities, when the going gets tough — she quits.   The people of Alaska elected her governor — and this is the second time she has demonstrated that she is willing to bale on them when something "better" comes along (the first time when the opportunity to run for VP dropped into her lap).   The impression I am left with is a woman who either can’t stand the heat OR is more than willing to simply resign any office when a better opportunity comes along.

Had the Alaska Lt. Governor been a democrat — do you think Palin would have still resigned?

I do think Sarah Palin is just plain tired. I don’t know if I believe she is going to run in2012. You have to admit she has been put through the wringer. When she was offered the VP post with McCain she was hardly in a position to say no. It’s a great honor to be considered for the second post in the land. She tried, she did what she was told, she put up with endless harrassment about Bristol’s pregnancy. Given her pro-life stance would it have been honorable at all to see it that the baby was aborted? It’s been an endless stream of bad press and harrassment and everyone has the point where they have had enough.

"pro-life stance" ? Someone who slaughters animals as Palin described? My family has always had hunters, and none of them would stoop to such unsportmanship activities, in Alaska or not.

I am not for the useless killing of animals either. But there is a great deal of difference between killing an animal and killing a person, which is what every baby is. Each has it’s own seperate and distinct value.

and you have the right to your opinion and to control your own reproductive organs as you see fit.

as it stands, the right to control your body is still our right as women. thank god.

she wasn’t harassed about her pro-life stance, or her pregnant, underage teen daughter.

she was criticized because normal people don’t understand how one can be against effective educational programs which have proven to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases, all while she herself got knocked up as an underage highshcool teenager, and then her oldest daughter gets herself knocked up as well.

most normal people see that dismissal of logic and are rightfully taken aback. it has been shown that abstinence only teachings lead to more infected young people, more pregnant teenage girls, and more absent fathers.

her refusal to acknowledge those simple facts of life, health, and reproductive information leaves her wide open to receive those criticisms.

she doesn’t mind putting the health and lives of our children at risk just to further her arbitrary religious beliefs.

There is absolutely nothing "arbitrary" about the fact that at the end of any nine month gestation of woman what arrives is a BABY. Bristol Palin could have gone off to a clinic and had "the problem" taken care of. Have you seen pictures of "the problem"? He’s one beautiful baby boy. Credit has to be given to Bristol for not taking "the easy way out".

no one is disputing this biological fact. why are you stating the obvious?

Bristol Palin could have gone off to a clinic and had "the problem" taken care of.

she could have, yes.

Have you seen pictures of "the problem"?

nope. it’s none of my business.

He’s one beautiful baby boy

i’m sure. and this means what?

Credit has to be given to Bristol for not taking "the easy way out".

if you feel like it, knock yourself out.

but i will also give credit to ladies who choose to terminate their pregnancies if they decide to or need to.

i will give credit to ladies who give birth to their fetuses if they decide they want to.

again: other peoples’ lives are none of my business unless they are in need of help, then I would of course offer any assistance i could give.

but i would never try to act in place of every single doctor in this nation, and ban VERY NEEDED medical procedures that women want and need.

You and I continue to agree to disagree. Thank you for taking the time to respond point by point.

unfortunately, you refuse to acknowledge the reality of human teenagers.

We ran out of "human teenagers" this last March when kids number 7&8 turned 20. So you could say we have had our share of experience in this house with them. We tried to instill in them not only respect for themselves, but for the people they chose/choose to date. We think the results speak for themselves. I do know of a case recently of a 14 year old girl who became a mom. The good news here is the mom and the baby are fine, the bad news is she circumvented her life in some ways. You can give a kid all the info in the world, if they are not willing to believe their own biology there will be consequences.

We ran out of "human teenagers" this last March when kids number 7&8 turned 20.

….. what? are you talking about your children?

i’m talking about every child that attends school, not just yours.

and somehow you think that if you tell kids "don’t have sex" they wont… you’re wrong. lots of kids don’t listen to their parents and make stupid mistakes without thinking about the consequences - their brains aren’t developed, that’s why they aren’t tried as adults if they committ a crime.

if i’m reading your post right, and you have kids, you should know this fact very well.

You can give a kid all the info in the world, if they are not willing to believe their own biology there will be consequences.

exactly, which is why they need all the information possible, including assistance out of bad situations. sex education should be taught to every single child alongside regular health information like vaccinations, common diseases, common handwashing techniques. and the fact that sarah palin only supported abstinence-only programs is unforgivable, which is where this thread started.

and also: a baby should never be a "consequence". this kind of disgusting opinion is why so many kids are abused and neglected - young kids who should not be giving birth ARE and have no way to care for them.

babies should only be birthed if the parents want them, or they personally want to give their child up for adoption. abortion should be safe and legal for those who choose not to continue with the pregnancy, and also those who are too young, too old, too poor, or high risk.

You obviously missed Amanda C’s whole point.  She wasn’t taking about abortion rights, she was talking about the right to obtain accurate birth control information - which would have prevented the pregnancy and negated any abortion.

I realize that this will be interpreted as completely "simplistic", but the best way not to have to confront the issue of pregnancy teen or otherwise is, again, simply not to engage in the sex act. It amazes me that there is such a freewheeling idea that sex under any circumstances is completely legitimate. There are such painful consequences to not fully engaging the choice issue. Not to mention the fact that sex inside of the institution of marriage is not a useless idea.
