Archbishop Takes on Obama and His 'Culture of Death'
Archbishop Raymond Burke, who once headed the Vatican’s Supreme Court, unleashed his fury on Notre Dame and President Obama in a speech this morning.
Notre Dame has come under heavy fire for having the president speak at their commencement ceremony, and Burke said, in no uncertain terms, that Catholic institutions should not open their podium to “those who teach and act publicly against the moral law."
Burke went on to say that Obama’s policies will usher in a "culture of death" and the "granting of an honorary doctorate at Notre Dame University to our president, who is so aggressively advancing an anti-life and anti-family agenda, is rightly the source of the greatest scandal," reports St. Louis Today.
So, we take it Burke won’t be in the front row for Obama’s appearance.

Where are you, MQC?
Catholic church leaders continue to stress that Catholic institutions should maintain their Catholic identity when choosing speakers - if Notre Dame had followed that policy, then President Obama would definitely not have been invited.
The blame lays squarely with Notre Dame and nobody else.
Hi GT!!! Well, yet another WOW ‘slam the Catholic Church thread’ and I see, in top form, that pedophilia…which has nothing to do with the issue at hand, has been foisted into this discussion…just for fun.
The blame lays squarely with Father Jenkins at Notre Dame; and I believe he will be dealt with (dismissed; early retirement; Vatican reassignment). He has pi$$ed off way too many Bishops; Archbishops; not to mention donors and alumni. President Obama’s ‘people’ should have had the political wherewithall to access the situation and politely be ‘busy.’ But…in true Obama fashion…this will be spun as ‘support from the Catholic Church for our beloved President…look, they gave him an honorary degree!!!’ I still think ‘something’ may come up; and he will not be available.
This is issue is not about choice; or about freedom of speech…they are strawman arguments here. This is about a rogue Priest and politician thinking ‘mutual prestige and a great photo op.’ Neither side had the respect for the Catholic Church, and its faithful, to ‘see’ that this would spin out of control as it has. The Commencement Ceremony has become a circus in the making; the Bishop of Indianapolis will NOT do the Convocation Mass; at last call 8 plus million in donations have been withdrawn; and the lack of respect and tolerance for the faith of the Roman Catholic Community (in South Bend and elsewhere) is being totally ignored. Apparently, Obama trumps all.
Again…I would love to lay odds that the President will be ‘called away’ next weekend.
Glad you’re here, Mary - this has become your ‘signature topic’, like it or not. I like your rogue priest comment. Father Jenkins has put his ego and photo-op above the university, alumni, bishops and donors, and he definitely deserves to be shown the door. Maybe he can hangout with Cardinal Law and never be seen by the Catholic public. That $8million loss will definitely be felt.
Should be an interesting week heading up to commencement!
Again…I would love to lay odds that the President will be ‘called away’ next weekend.
By Mary Quite-Contrary on 05/08/2009 3:33 pm MQ-C, I think the same thing or at-least… I’m hoping! The anti-Catholicism just drips from your post. Do you feel better now that its in black and white?
Catholic Charities has helped tens of millions worldwide…but its more fun to hyperbole on with the hate.
Mary, your absolutes are not applicable to everyone in the world. Give it up!
However, I know of 3 women who can have babies that you can adopt soon - have room for 1 or 2?
In what way are they not applicable? Are those 3 currently pregnant or merely able to be pregnant? In this house, and not because we are by any stretch well off, we have always made room for whom ever God sent. We had four children in five years, we hit a lull, actually thought we were done. Bingo baby number 5. Hit a real lull, baby number 5 went into first grade. Mom was going back to work….then mom found out she’d be re-upped for the "old job". Son a sophomore in high school, another a freshman, eigth and seventh graders, first grader. New baby? Well no, set of twin boys instead. Baby number 5 was a "surprise" babies number 6 & 7 were a SHOCK. Were sacrifices made absolutely. Would I change any of it? Not for every dime the Mega Millions has ever given away.
