Obama's Easter Egg Roll | 04/13/2009 10:30 am

Barack and Michelle Obama Host Easter Egg Roll (Video)

Barack and Michelle Obama took some time from their busy schedules to host the White House’s annual Easter egg roll this morning.

Though past presidents have long welcomed children to the executive mansion for egg-related activities, this year’s broke new ground after the President went out of his way to invite gay and lesbian families. No previous administration has gone that far. About 1,000 gay and lesbian activists showed up to President Bush’s 2006 roll, but were not specifically asked to attend. In fact, many conservatives described their presence as party "crashing."

This year, however, Mr. Obama’s administration distributed tickets through a number of gay non-profits. President Bush even came up against a protest during the 2006 celebration, when protesters gathered to make their voices heard. That administration accused the activists of "crashing" the event.

An estimated 30,000 people are expected to attend today’s event, which will include yoga classes for children and a performance by the pop star Fergie. Participants will also receive a decorated wooden egg made from sustainable forests, reports The New York Times.

I saw this on CNN this morning. Looked like so much fun. I am glad everything went off peacefully from what I saw.

I would love to be able to take my daughter to this one year!  I need to check into how much this would cost and how to get invited or get a ticket…I think its great that gay families were invited this year.

I hope you do get to go one year. As a mom, when I saw that little girl trying so hard and getting help also, it just touched me. She looked so determined, yet the task appeared a little hard for her. What fun to have help from the President. Anyway, I do hope you get to go some time and I too am glad they invited gay families this year.

MJ…I was reading on line about what people do to get tickets…Maybe I can get my hubby to go to DC and camp out or we will have to try & purchase them online when they come availalbe next year…Seems like I may have to take the day off b/c they go on sale at a certain time but people get online and start hitting refresh hours before the sale even starts…Maybe I can see if a friend of mine who has contacts can snag us a ticket for our daughter.  Just to have her go through that experience would be great.

Yes, C Hardy, I would do whatever it takes to get a ticket. Once my husband and I and our next door neighbors camped out in front of a building with many others at 3 a.m. just so we could have our children get into a much wanted camp in the summer. It was WINTER when we did this. We were CRAZY, but we did it. If you go some crazy route like I did, you’ll look back and laugh at what you did, but you’ll beam…. "see what I did?" :) Good luck.

This year they stopped the "camping out" for tickets and all were given away online, allowing more people, and residents of other states to attend. I believe they said this morning 48 states were represented.

I couldn’t stop laughing at the President yelling ‘go! go!" he looked like he was herding them! It looks like the weather in DC wasn’t as gorgeous as what we had in Chicago yesterday.

Kids are kids.  What difference does it make if their parents are gay?  I don’t understand how this could even be part of the equation.  Why do we keep making these distinctions.  Let the kids enjoy themselves as kids and not the offspring of gay parents.  Looks like the Easter egg hunt was just fun without any distinctions being made.

I agree, Judy. Why make these distinctions? Everyones parents should be able to marry one another if they want - regardless of their genitals.

It looks like everyone had fun.  I certainly had fun watching that.  :)

It is so much fun to see young kids in the White House again and to see such active parents. The photos from the Easter Egg Roll just made my day.

I just heard that Fergie did a horrendous version of the National Anthem at the event???  Why is a singer who appears on the cover of MAXIM and sings sond with sexy lyrics at a childrens event?

Why not Jordin Sparks instead?..

The staff is really putting a tacky image into the White House.  The poor gifts, snubs, parties for Obama’s friends…..someone need to give them a lesson in class!

Do you know what, it would not matter what the Obama’s did folks like yourself would criticize no matter what?   That little green monster keeps popping up and you all just can’t let it go!!!

Thank you, Caj P, for saying it so that I don’t have to. No matter what this President and his wife do, it’s wrong according to some responders on this site.   I haven’t seen a picture yet, but wonder what the First Lady’s Easter dress looked like.  It must have been ok, probably had sleeves, or someone would have posted something snippy about THAT

The Obamas could have pooped golden eggs and some would say they weren’t big enough. Viva la difference!
