British PM Gordon Brown: Afghanistan's Mountains Are 'Breeding Ground' for Terrorism

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown had some tough talk for Afghanistan today.

The mountainous border between Afghanistan and Pakistan controlled by the Taliban is a "breeding ground, the crucible of terrorism," Brown said during his Monday visit with Afghan President Hamit Karzai in Kabul, CNN reports. "A chain of terror links these areas to the streets of many of the capital cities of the world."

Brown’s warnings against extremism come just two days before officials are set to unveil a new plan for dealing with lawlessness. About 600 more British troops will be added to the NATO forces in Afghanistan this summer, bringing that country’s contributions to 9,000 — the second largest behind the U.S. Fifty-two British soldiers died in that country last year. Brown said international aid to Pakistan and Afghanistan must be better coordinated to fight extremism in those countries, but also called for Afghanistan to take more responsibility for its own security.

"Our approach to these countries is different, but must be complementary. Our strategy for dealing with this breeding ground for terrorism will mean more security on the streets of Britain," Brown said. "We cannot sit by and allow this centre or epicentre of terrorism to continue to exist without taking further action."

Gordon was also supposed to meet with Pakistan President Zardari today in that country, but was told when he got there that Zardari wasn’t available. Was it a snub? Maybe he didn’t like what he thought Gordon was going to say…

Karzai is trying to put out other fires, as well. After much international outcry, Karzai said Monday that his government will amend a law many women’s and human-rights groups claim gave Shi’ite Muslim men the green light to rape their wives. The law requires women to satisfy their husbands’ sexual desires.

"I assure you that the laws of Afghanistan will be in complete harmony with the constitution of Afghanistan, and the human rights that we have adhered to in our constitution and in the principles of the international treaties," Karzai said after meeting with Brown.

Gordon Brown is the equivalent of W. He has made a mess in the U.K.and he is looking for something to get him out of the political frying pan. Of course if that means the lives of a few soldiers oh well.

Just how much international aid should be given to Pakistan?  In ‘07, the USA gave Pakistan 3 billion to fight terrorism along its border.  Instead of beefing up patrols and weapons there, Pakistan instead bought fighter jets in case nuclear India gets uneasy.

Pres. Bush offered to send desert trained military ( Delta Force) to seach those caves.  Pakistan refused.  Then Pres. Bush offered to have the US military train the Pakistani military in desert warfare with the newest warfare technology.   You can imagine how well that went over.

With Pakistan, it’s two steps forward and four steps backward.
