Candice Bergen on Power and Its Abuse

Candice Bergen
Power and its abuse are buddies. Nature of us as beasts.

I agree with Candice whole-heartedly. I think that greed and corruption are, sadly, inevitable at this stage in our evolution. Wouldn’t it be great if we could hit a "fast-forward" button somewhere and shoot ahead 200 or 300 years to see what happens to our species?

I echo Ms. Candice Bergen’s take on power and its’ misused. If gone unchecked could lead to corruption and the corrosion of trust in government. I am glad Ms. Bergen could share her intellect to the world.

Any chance, we could see you again on a TV sitcom soon? Missed Boston Legal so very much, So funny and wiity show. It is well cast with unforgettable ensemble of bright stars. James Spade, William Shatner and Candice Bergen a "tour de force."

True. History shows us that.

This is why we have a free press and checks and balances…to watch-dog corporations and elected officials. We are a nation of laws…if our media is on their toes instead of elevating elected, temporary stewards to God-hood, we ususally find out about any corruption and rout it quickly.

Yes—-but not just in Britain——our own congress members are just a guilty…….N. Korean and Myanmar power abuses haven;t hit the ‘ethics’ radar of many—not yet, anyway.

I agree Candice, abuse and power are like peanutbutter and jelly, they go together.

Majority of Media will not pick just any story unless fluff, upbeat, feel good and positive are part of the mix. Its all about the bottom line, business first over real life stories. (Might hurt their ratings.) We hear news all over the world, but not what is happening in the real world of the USA. Corruption, greed run deep throughout our government. I could tell true stories that would anger and frustrate 99% of women. Calling the “So called” Public Servants? You’ve got to be kidding. Like being put on hold or an automated answering machine. Where can you vent what is/has happened and people listen and do something about it? No one listens or cares unless its a major crisis. Why can’t we really listen and resolve the issues. Add arrogance to greed and power. Which would be peanut butter, jelly and bananas. Everyone has a story to be told, sometimes more than one. Standing up for what is right doesn’t mean you will win, when corruption, politics, greed, arrogance come into play. We no longer a nation of “truth” unless the truth will get them a popular vote. We need to re-think our voting habits and not listen to the networks that only tell of the accomplishments and not there voting habits. Stick to blogging and research before casting our votes. So much information is out on the web, we need to take the time to really focus on what is happening on the home front. News should be news . Fluff should be for the reality shows

Freida -

One major problem in the U.S.  is that our president have been complicit, or ignore abuses of power destroying lives and livlihoods in America. For example, our last FCC chairman (appointed no less) destroyed journalism by permitting conglomerates to take over independent news outlets. America has few journalist much less those who are able to investigate and report the truth. No one has done one thing about this crime towards Americans, nor has there been any action to stop illegal, unethical politicans who have endangered our nation the past 3 decades — each president inferred such a responsible action, yet none has done so and we stand by permitting this turning of heads.

In my region for example, one company owns most of the TV-Radio and newspaper outlets; hence, we do not receive news, and it’s filtered, at best. Worse, many of the unknowing, poorly educated citizens love it - it’s a mark of "local support." Why? Because, socially, we have lost control over our lives, so local is all we have left.

You are right on in your entry; however, as long as we subscribe to cable and or satellite, we are fluffing the air bubble of responsiblity in the U.S. They lied to us - when this all began it was to be paid for, no free (we as taxpayers own the air waves) because "there will be no ads!" Well, that didn’t last long. Now, we are all on computers, here, we can see anything we want on our monitors, or TV screens in fact (ask "Heidi" how to do it!).

I do not think for a minute that the tragic decline in education in our nation has been a mistake - it has been intended. Hence, most of our nations leaders are lawyers. Sociologists, psychologists, scientists and historians wouldn’t stand a ghost of a chance as candidates of anything. From a macro standpoint, we must have 2 year term limits, remove the Golden Parachute guaranteed retirment income from all political offices, and stop campaigns - putting public service to a draft - whereby we all are willing to serve (we would do no less than those the past 20 years have done, and you can bet we would ask questions before voting!).

The past 40 years we have witnessed increasing numbers of students leave schools at any age, knowing little more than when they entered formal education; they certainly do not know how to read, or discern quality and authenticity from utter nonsense. Listen to the publics stand on "governement controlled health care" - its erroneous, at best. They ahven’t a clue how highly successful, and caring programs are run in other top nations’ health care systems. Energy? Not a clue… Has anyone questioned why Congress has yet to lower the speed limit on our highways if we are concerned about the access to petroleum?

This all comes down to the abject destruction of a Class in America. A politician boldly commented recently that when LBJ started Medicaid he stated the cost, however "that has increased 1000%"  - the idiot dared to ignore the fact that the lower class increased that much due to corporations taking over our country in every section, including higher education. Who challenged him? No one I noticed, but perhaps myself. Did he forget that the states run Medicaid, and most have outsourced it to for-profit insurance companies which utilize no one with medical licenses to make decisions on the lives and health for citizens? I think not.

Stalin warned us - we will break America from the inside.
