Candice Bergen Thinks Republicans Have Become 'Utterly Irrelevant'

Candice Bergen
The Republicans seem to have hit a long, bad, mean-spirited patch. Well, another of those patches. The last eight years seem to have honed their combativeness to a fine and brittle point. They have become hopelessly extremist in their conservatism, utterly irrelevant and hopelessly inflexible.
Maybe what Liz said is the direction they should take; become the Independent Republican party. Reinvent themselves. Give themselves a good name for God’s sake. Find some vibrant young intelligent leaders and work with the Democrats instead of being so mindlessly obstructionist.

I’m a few days late James, but I just wanted to say, great post! Nice to see a detailed well thought out post in here again. I keep trying to keep posting in here so that the fringe spin doesn’t take over, but I’m getting too worn out to post like that anymore! You haven’t been around much so maybe you have re-fueled and can come back more often to balance out what has nearly become a FOX echo chamber.

I consider myself conservative; yet I tend to vote for Democrats.  God’s primary priniciple is for us to love one another, like He loves us.  Wheteher you believe in God or not, it seems like that is still a good philosophy to follow.  And I have found that while Republicans consider themselves the moral right and religious, most of the republican philosophy leaves out the basic premise of loving one another and caring for one another.  There is enough bounty on this earth for everyone to have access to healthcare, food and shelter, etc.  Also, who are we, any of us, to interfere in choices that we sometime have to make, like abortion.  I don’t believe in it, but I don’t believe I have a right to tell you or legislate your choice.  All that to say, maybe Republicans should look in the mirror, examine yourselves and then develop policies or ideals that incorporate a love for everyone. Right now, Democrats are the closest we have to it.

It’s a well worn title now, but the Party of No is where they stand.  So far, voting no is the extent of the Republicans’ thought process.

They are also the Party of Whiners.  Not only do they have no innovative ideas ,but they hype the very smallest gestures this President makes.  If he laughs or frowns , it carries some political foreboding.  His wife places her hand on the Queen’s back , and the sky is falling. He attempts to establish diplomatic relations with other countries, and he becomes the terrorists’ friend.

The GOP is in a death spiral and could go the way of the Whigs.  It will not be because of anything the Dems did.  It will be because the hard right continues to tighten its own noose.

There are good republicans out there, they just have an extreme branch running things right now.

I am religious.  That makes me "hateful"?  I believe that there are right and wrongs.  I believe that some lines should not be crossed.  I listen to different opinions, I enjoy discussing different philosophies, but because I listen to "conservative" talk radio I am to be despised and ridiculed?  I do not WANT there to be a national religion.  But a society that does not respect the common religious tenets is bound to become chaotic.  (Don’t kill, steal, lie, envy, etc.)  Our common laws are built on the 10 Commandments.   Does that make me "hateful"?  Because I have strong views about certain issues makes me "hopelessly extremist and inflexible"?  I assure you, that if we sat down for a cup of joe I would be very nice, and civil - not hateful.  Can you say the same?
