Candice Bergen: Where Are the Terrorists?

Candice Bergen
Afghanistan? I thought we were shifting our focus to Pakistan. That’s where Al-Qaeda is said to be hanging these days. The Taliban is supposedly no threat to the West. Unless they team up. Which they are wont to do.

I believe that a terrorist is anyone who kills a person in whatever context. I can’t see why an army designed to kill people (they have guns) can save people from another ’army’. Does it really matter if people die for peace or revenge? The result is still the loss of human lives!

I ask the same question each time I go through security at the airport.  Where are the terrorists?

AT the start of my last cross country airplane trip, I remembered to remove my shoes, get the bag of liquids out of my purse, put everything including my coat in a plastic container while at the same time having a rather tall man breath down my neck because I was so SLOW!……..In my rush, I forgot I had a bottle of water in my purse and, too, I am used to having signs that remind me that I have a bottle of water in my purse.  But this time no signs to remind me.  It was the end of the world….the bottle of water.  I had to go through security screening again.  What is a 62 year old woman with a heart condition who only travels once a year to do?

They asked me what I wanted to do with the water bottle.  I said throw it away.  And then I paid $2.20 to replace the small bottle of water that cost me only $.90 on the "outside".   I am feeling rather terrorized by the bottle water suppliers at the airports.

If we pull out of Afganistan the Taliban will slaughter all those people who have opposed them.  The terrorist are everywhere but lets hope and pray that more & more people who seek freedom from these hateful people can defend themselves.  We can’t do it all but the more these countries start to stand up against these evil nuts they can ensure the future of their children.  Educating them so they see that freedom is the only way.

Suzanne I hear your frustration and can relate but after 9/11 and losing friends I can tell you I’m still glad that we have our guard up.  Terrorist are very patient people with a major agenda and they wait for our guard to be down.  It’s not the same world anymore and 9/11 changed that.

Yes 9/11 changed our lives, but when do we take the fear away and concentrate on trust.  We have to give responsibility back to the countries where the fighting is happening.  Give them the education to know who the aggressors are.  The power should belong to the people of these countries we can’t be telling them how to live.  We can teach  what needs to be done and provide them the means to fight with might.  We don’t need to do the fighting for them.

Where are the terrorists?  Try Hayden Lake Idaho and our own home-grown Nazis, and the people associated with clinic and church bombings and killings and supporting idiots like Tim McVeigh and his pal. Try Pakistan, Iraq, Africa, Iran, Europe, South America, Mexican drug cartels, Russia, Chechnya, Saudi Arabia, India, Syria, Israel, Palestine, Turkey, Uzbekistan and the list goes on. Pick a continent other than Antarctica and you’ll find terrorists.  Everywhere is the best answer to this question. Anywhere there’s a political ideology or a fundamentalist intolerant religion there’s terrorism.

There will always be terrorist cells somewhere. They will continue to survive as long as rogue countries permit them safe havens.  What can we do? Keep our options open and as quickly as possible, GET OUT OF THERE!!!!

From an amateur viewpoint,  I believe that Al Queda and the Taliban as they exist must be stopped and destroyed as long as they continue to practice violence which results in the death of innocent people.  It is unfortunate that U.S. policies in the past actually led to the Taliban, since we financed and supplied arms to both Iraq in their war with Iran, and to Afghanistan when the Soviet Union invaded them.   What we must also do is encourage and support education of children in these countries, a la Gregory Mortensen, and cut off financing and support of any nation that continues to harbor and support terrorists.

As far as domestic terrorists, we should use the same vigour and determination to stop them as well.  And I refer to terrorists as those whose goal is to kill innocent people for a political purpose or are ignorant ‘weapons’ of organized terrorist organizations.  I don’t consider the efforts of organizations like Greenpeace or other organizations who are fighting against the rape of the Earth as terrorists, and it would be unconscienable for any American leader to broaden the meaning of ‘fighting terrorism’ to those environmentalists who are dissenting from a destructive way of life without harming people, as opposed to terrorists who kill people needlessly and senselessly.

Not so much shifting focus to Pakistan as giving it the attention it warrants in this war.  They are a major ally, even if reluctantly so, but at the same time their porous border and poor control of the FATA makes their territory a sort of de facto continuum with Afghanistan.  It’s a complicated situation.

The terrorists are every where in the middle east and it is too bad we did not go immediately after Bin Laden, rather than play the lets finish poppa Bush war with Iraq. It was proven that he was in Pakistan at that time after 911.  We really should still be aware in our own country as to who is coming across the borders and residing here in our own country, as we just recently missed being attacked in NY City again.  Watch the people around your area.  You would be surprised who might be a threat.

You are ridiculous with this daddy Bush thing. This is what Bush saved Iraq from. Make sure you watch every chapter. These atrocities no longer happen in Iraq because of Bush. http://fdd.typepad.com/fdd/2006/01/alert_saddams_c.html

The people of Iran protested because they want what Bush gave to Iraq. Obama said he would catch Bin Laden. What happened? Because of Pelosi, he’s stalling on the 40K troops his General requested.

Bush and his cronies damn near destroyed Iraq—they displaced the Iraqi middle class, the professional class of doctors, layers, etc.,  who now reside in Syria and Jordan.  And they withe their trumped up war probably had killed upwards of 500K civilians, increased al Qaeda in Iraq and other terrorist groups by the carload. The Bushies had no reason what ever to engage in a war in Iraq other than ludicrously trumped up reasons which didn’t hold water then nor do they now. If you think 40K in troops is going to help you need to read a bit more—Petraeus has stated categorically the 650K troop strength would adequately curtail the Taliban , the narcotics trade and possibly the total corruption of the area. And how long would we have to be there?  10 yrs? 20 yrs? 50 yrs? You have no idea and neither ddo the generals.

F P: Why are you writing to me so much? One response a day is plenty. Bush freed the country of Iraq. Iran protested after their fixed election because they want what Bush gave to Iraq. This is what Bush saved the Iraqi people from. Make sure you watch all 4 chapters. http://fdd.typepad.com/fdd/2006/01/alert_saddams_c.html

40K troops is not the number McCrystal needs to win the war in Afghan, its the number of troops he needs now. The U.S. has major military bases in Germany, Korea, Japan, Italy, Cuba, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Belgium, UK, Netherlands, Bahrain, Iceland, Greece, Spain. Thats what we do. We save people from the bad guys then stick around.
