Candice Bergen Worries About the Health of David Rohde

Candice Bergen
Like everyone, I had no idea that a Times reporter had been kidnapped for six months. It seems odd that he hasn’t been seen since his escape and makes me worry about his overall health. But I certainly understand his wanting his privacy. Bill Keller at the Times has been extremely closemouthed before and since. Who knows what he would have done if it hadn’t turned out well. He seems very certain of his convictions.

Candice,  NPR said he was only married 2 months before his disappearance and they were going to reunite and go into seclusion for awhile.  Makes sense to me…

It does seem out of step with our "norm" of holding a press conference and showing one’s face to share the happy outcome with the public, but maybe he has been traumatized and needs his privacy… or alternatively, maybe there are others we don’t know about, whose safety could be jeopardized by too much publicity.

We need more people like Bill Keller around everywhere.  Silence, as the proverb says, is golden.  In this case a life was saved, maybe other lives will be too; and Rohde’s family was protected from the prying media voltures.  Rohde has the right to privacy.  He doesn’t owe the public an appearance, neither does he need to relive his captivity by talking about it to the media.  It’s his  life.  It’s up to him.
