David Feherty Takes Shot at Nancy Pelosi | 05/11/2009 10:40 am

CBS Golf Analyst Dave Feherty Apologizes for Nancy Pelosi Shooting Comment

By The Staff at wowOwow.com

What do you do after saying that, if given the chance and two bullets, an American soldier would shoot House Speaker Nancy Pelosi twice instead of Osama bin Laden? If you’re golf analyst David Feherty, you apologize.

In a piece for D Magazine in Dallas about George Bush, in which Feherty was trying to relay American troops’ loyalty to their president, the CBS staffer wrote:

From my own experience visiting the troops in the Middle East, I can tell you this, though: despite how the conflict has been portrayed by our glorious media, if you gave any U.S. soldier a gun with two bullets in it, and he found himself in an elevator with Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and Osama bin Laden, there’s a good chance that Nancy Pelosi would get shot twice, and Harry Reid and bin Laden would be strangled to death."

The Ireland-born Feherty has since come under fire for the comments, including from MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann. While CBS also tried to distance itself from Feherty’s humor, the sports man issued an apology over the weekend, saying: "This passage was a metaphor meant to describe how American troops felt about our 43rd president. In retrospect, it was inappropriate and unacceptable, and has clearly insulted Speaker Pelosi and Senator Reid, and for that, I apologize. As for our troops, they know I will continue to do as much as I can for them both at home and abroad."

But if Feherty’s comments raised such a ruckus, why aren’t comic Wanda Sykes’ comments receiving a similar response, asks The New York Daily News.

At the White House Correspondents’ Dinner Saturday night, Sykes had some harsh things to say about prominent Republicans like Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh and Dick Cheney.

"You know, you might want to look into this, [President Obama], because I think maybe Rush Limbaugh was the 20th hijacker, but he was just so strung out on OxyContin he missed his flight," she said. "Rush Limbaugh hopes the country fails? I hope his kidneys fail, how ‘bout that?"

What do you think? Double standard?

I don’t particularly care for Pelosi and believe Harry Reid is out of synch and should retire, but the dude was way out of line. At least he had the good grace to apologize. As for Wanda, that was Wanda being Wanda.

Let’s just Feherty the same pass…like Wanda being Wanda…its Feherty being Fererty…EXCEPT Feherty doesn’t receive a threefer deferment (AA, lesbian, lib).

no - he’s not a comic doing stand up comedy….he was telling what he thought to be the truth. See the difference?

Shouldn’t we at wow be celebrating that a woman - a black lesbian even - is mainstream and well known enough to be invited to do thiis gig?

Georgia:  Shouldn’t we at wow be celebrating that a woman…

Why?  We don’t celebrate other women such as Gov. Palin and her accomplishments.  Or Ann Coulter and the rest who make a living trying to be funny.  What’s so special about Wanda?

Hey, M Q-C, I’ve got it. It’s still Sykes because she’s over age 40. So she’s a fourfer.

thanks for the laugh - good to know what it is Coultergeist thinks she’s doing. She certainly makes a living, so somebody’s laughing. Problem is, she says she’s a commentator. You know, the serious stuff.

Plenty o’women celebrated Palin’s nomination until it bcame clear it was tokenism. Some are still celebrating, and claiming that any fact that doesn’t flatter her is "sexism in the media".

What’s special about Wanda? What’s special about any woman making it in a man’s business?

Are you saying that "many a truth is NOT said in jest"??

He could have found a better way to describe the way the military feels about this administration. Of course, it would not have been as colorful….but at least he had the MANNERS to apologize.

No Georgia…I was ashamed that a woman would be used in such a fashion. She was allowed to make some very ugly remarks and take the heat, while men sat back and got a pass….she was used. Wanda being Wanda…she was the perfect mark to be manipulated into saying some ugly things.

Self depreciaing humor would have been the better call at this function. To attack the previous administration and a private citizen is just day in the life of a liberal. I thought that she was a smarter woman than that…but I was wrong.

Uh… Reid and Pelosi are not in the administration.

And while you are talking about Sykes being used, here are a couple things to keep in mind: First, The White House did not hire her, the White House Correspondents Association did. Second, you are using her to attack liberals.

Uh…Pelosi and Reid have power in this administration…don’t act like you don’t get that.

First, they knew who was hired…don’t act like the WHCA works in a bubble.

Secondly…I am replying to the liberal views that she vomited up on National TV.

Too bad that a woman was so flattered that she could not look past the why…..

To answer the question posed at the end of the piece, there is ABSOLUTELY a double standard and no doubt it will remain in place for quite some time. Better to ignore it and laugh at whatever you find funny - humor is a matter of personal taste, always has been, always will be!

I don’t care for Pelosi; I find her to be “over the top” and annoying but she doesn’t deserve anything like that. In fact, I don’t think anyone deserves that type of comment; I don’t care what your political affiliations are!
