Couric Wins Cronkite Award for Palin Interview

Remember when Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin accused journalist Katie Couric of "exploiting" their disastrous exchange — the one in which Palin couldn’t name some of running mate John McCain’s policies? Couric’s work obviously paid off, because the 52-year-old today received the prestigious Walter Cronkite Award for the exchange. The Baltimore Sun elaborates:

"Couric, who weathered one of network TV’s most criticized anchor-desk launches when she took over from interim anchor Bob Schieffer, was named winner of the University of Southern California’s Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in TV Political Journalism for her focused and illuminating interviews with Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin. The award is given by the Lear Center in the School of Journalism.

"And then, Couric and CBS News withstood a withering attack from the right — angered by seeing their candidate so exposed."

No word on whether Palin plans on sending her congratulations, although we’re not holding our breath.

Libra:  Nancy Pelosi???

Now that you mention Nancy Pelosi, that would be a great interview.  Seems she’s been using Air Force transportation to trek her and her friends to far away places like the Pope’s palace and Switzerland…  while we all tighen our belts.  Might be some interesting questions to be asked there.

Princess Katie meet Queen Nancy.

This award is about as meaningful  now as the Pulitzer Prize these days.

it may be hard to pin her down though—with the travel and all—the g5..at her beckon call—every weekend, on our dime

Oh Libra—-you are priceless! That would be the ticket. Couric interviews Pelosi and Nancybaby winds up out of a job. Well, we can dream, can’t we????

That would be too good to be true  !!!    If Katie could pull that off, I would clearly change my opinion of her.

I’m no fan ‘o’ Katie’s but she does have her moments. She usually puts in a power piece every five to ten years.

For the all the put downs of her interviewing skills and what was cut-out of the interview as proof of MS Couric’s ambush of La Govenor Palin, no one has offered up a better interview that took place in ‘08. Remember ‘08 was quite year for news.

The award from the Lear Center is what it is and therefore appropriate.

There is a high road here. I’ll leave a trail of bread crumbs.

Katie Couric did something that others who interviewed Mrs Palin did not: she followed up. She asked a question, then listened to the answer (rare these days), and when she received no answer, asked again (even rarer). She stayed in the moment and allowed us insights no one else had been prepared to offer. If for no other reason than that, IMO she deserved the award. Congratulations, Ms Couric!

Rocky,

You got it right… she followed up by asking again for an answer and she kept the camera rolling. I agree with you that Katie Couric deserves and earned that award.

Queenie,

What is it you’re hoping to teach me? I certainly understand the words "cut" and "repaste". If I did something you didn’t like, just scroll on by.

Sorry Margaret, but you are wrong.  Kitty Couric would have "earned" it if she or her network had asked equally tough questions of both, not just one, of the presidential nominees.  The Democrat Joe Biden got a free ride from Kitty and CBS.

Kate, 1) I don’t know who you are. 2) You’ve written your statement in the wrong part of a thread (out of sequence, not tied to anything I’ve said). 3) I am not wrong about anything because I WASN’T ON THE COMMITTEE THAT CHOSE KATIE FOR THE AWARD. Go talk to them. They’re in California. 4) You don’t know how to spell Katie. 5) You could be drinking because you wrote the same paragraph twice. 6) Go talk to somebody else.

Greta did some great interviews with Palin…that asked legitimate questions and took the time to reasearch her positions rather than get her questions from the Huffington Compost and Daily KOMs
