In Defense of My Favorite 'Sick Puppy' – Rachel Maddow, by Mr. wOw

Last week, the former president of the United States, George Bush I, weighed in on opinionated cable yakkers. He allowed that there was a "lack of civility" all around, and was generous enough to concede that President Obama was "entitled to civil treatment." (This is quite a lot coming a man married to Marie Antoinette, aka Barbara Bush. Who can ever forget BB’s pronouncement that the devastated Americans corralled into the Astrodome, to escape Hurricane Katrina, were actually living better than they usually did? "This is working out very well for them.")

But of course, the one-time, one-term president had to single out the talking heads on the left, referring to MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow as "sick puppies."

While I wouldn’t go so far as to call Olbermann a sick puppy, he has definitely worn thin. I once found him smart and not too over-the-top to irritate, but during last year’s campaign, he went off the rails – as did all the males on MSNBC – over the possibility that Hillary Clinton might win the Democratic nomination. And when she wouldn’t just fold up her tent and leave the campaigning field open to Obama, his head and his ego exploded, and it has been a swollen mess ever since.

Olbermann has become a parody of himself, preaching to the converted every night. He has his fans, for sure, but what he generally induces in Mr. wOw is a series of cringes. I’m on his side, but want him to shut up most of the time. And I detest that bit of business at the end: "This is the whatever day since George W. Bush declared mission accomplished in Iraq." What does that have to do with anything now? Enough. And Olbermann’s paper crunching and tossing it at the camera (his audience?) – showy and nastily aggressive.

Which brings us to Ms. Maddow. She began popping up on MSNBC as a guest, often sparring, quite enjoyably, with Pat Buchanan (and infamously, with Joe Scarborough, who did not enjoy the experience). She seemed to have been brought up through the auspices of Olbermann, they were friends. Olbermann clearly respected her. And what was not to respect? She was a breath of fresh air on cable: intelligent, prepared, reasonable, amusing, blessedly devoid of the self-activated intolerant scream button that afflicts so many.

Maddow’s star was rising, and just so we knew it, MSNBC tried to slap on a bit of eyeliner on and femme her up slightly. Not only was this unnecessary, it looked unattractive. For one brief, terrible moment Mr. wOw feared her boyish haircut was going to be poofed into some sort of faux "do." Tailored simplicity shouldn’t be messed with.

Clearly, Maddow was being groomed for her own show, and finally, it happened. Initially, however, it looked as if she was too much a creature of, and too influenced stylistically, by Olbermann. She was suddenly "cute." She made funny faces, she used funny voices. Once I turned her on to find her wearing a funny hat! She was also relentlessly snarky. That becomes tiring. And then there was that guy at the end of her show, the "pop culture" maven, or whatever he was (still is) to riff on something insubstantial. As if anything insubstantial is wanted from Rachel Maddow. She was no less intelligent, prepared and reasonable, but she was losing something valuable and unique in what appeared to be an attempt to be one of MSNBC’s frat boys. Mr. wOw was distressed.

Mr. wOw - You make me laugh so often.

I’ve wondered just how deep Mr. Luz’ waters run.  It will be interesting to see how his story unfolds.  I can only hope that with or without Madonna his star climbs ever higher.

"F P, you can say what you want but thousands of Americans are listening to him."

"Thousands" of American watched Jerry Springer faithfully for many years.

"Thousands" of Americans still watch professional "rasslin’".

"Thousands" of Americas watch NASCAR races hoping to see a violent crash.

I’ll bet a lot of them are the same "Thousands" who watch Beck.

Crowds of people used to gather in the Collisium to watch people kill each other.

A few centuries later crowds of people used to gather to watch public executions.

Crowds of people will gather today at the scene of a tragedy in hopes of getting a glimpse of carnage.

Crowds of people today watch boxing to see people bloody each other.

Most red necks watch NASCAR in hopes of seeing a violent crash.

The quantity the of viewership is in no way an indication of the quality of the spectacle or the viewers.

No, F P, not exactly at all.   Glenn Beck’s popularity has soared over the past several months due to the lack of leadership in the Whie House.   We can never compare concerns about the state of our economy and massive government involvement with the list of ridiculous comments you threw together, Sherrie.    You’ve thrown together a list and threw your credibility into a wall.

Sorry, try something else.  Americans are trying to find the truth because they no longer trust Obama.

The Bathetic Bawler popularity has soared because the people generally that listen to this demagogue have no sense of history, are unable to think for themselves beyond the keyhole of their own paranoia., and are basically uneducated and want to believe the worst. He does nothing but cater to their fantasies and laughs all the way to the bank.  Buy stock in Vicks Vapo-rub—there should be a major thrust in sales because of his using that product. 60 % +/- still trust Obama—that’s a damn site more than ever trusted Bush.

F P, please do not ever suggest that I do not have a sense of history and that I’m unable to think for myself….that’s really a bridge too far.   If you simply do not like Glenn Beck, then state that, but there is absolutely no reason for you to get a pass when you insult the right.

You disappoint me, Frank.   Fox News now has more democrats watching than republicans.   Get a grip and bring yourself up to date on the facts.   You aren’t getting the facts from the "in the tank for Obama" journalists….and you know it.   It took them a week to print anything about the ACORN story and Van Jones….one week after the breaking news on Fox.   Why?

Your numbers are also wrong….50% still trust Obama and they, more than likely, have their fingers crossed.   Obama is a loser, F P.

Frank, I find your post incredibly ironic.  Why?  Because you could not have ever watched or listened to Glenn Beck and NOT heard of constant historical references.  The writings of Thomas Paine; Thomas Jefferson; deTocqueville; are routinely cited.  He uses the US Constitution continually.

But post on about the uneducated and paranoid?  Could you just be confused?  Because I find the ones (documented on audio and video) showing up recently in Detroit, looking for their Obama money (where did he get it?  ‘I dunno from his stash…but he’s giving it to us, and we love him!’) to be the uneducated…and soon to be ‘paranoid’ when they are finally told that out of the 65,000 that lined up, only about 3000 will get partial funds.  So much for that stash?

And, Vapo-Rub has long been used by rescue workers; by LEOs; and by those who work in forensics…why?  The heavy menthol vapors cover the stench for those sent in to do the clean up.  Kinda puts that little swipe in perspective…

And lastly, lapdog CNN (you know the ones Axelrod/Emmanuel/Dunn have ‘patted on the head’ for Mr. Obama) has a poll of their own.  Out today.  Obama’s ‘trust’ level is at 50 percent.  Ouch.

Time for the White House to launch another salvo at Glenn Beck…

FP - Surely all those dumb folks sitting there watching Beck for years won’t be affected, now will they?  No more than the Obamas sitting there all those years listening to Rev. Wright affected their thinking.  Yeah?

WOW - its amazing - it never stops.  The claws come out when people dont agree with those on the left.  I remember not too long ago MILLIONS gathered in DC to see Obama become President - I could say they were stupid but won’t.  I also find it funny - those on here and other sites say they dont like this person or that person who works for FOX YET they know all of what they say - dont you realize you watching and listening just adds to their ratings and makes them talk even more?

I just find that interesting to say the least - oh but wait - let me see - you do it b/c you want to keep your enemies closer and you have nothing else better to do with your life at 5pm then to listen to Beck and then bi**h about what he says - jeez people - really?

Sherrie - your post above - so basically your saying nothing has changed…..I am sure you tune in to something that millions of others tune into.

Excuse me, C Hardy, but I find your post confusing. Claws? whose exactly? People don’t need to watch Fox news to know what goes on in some of their programs. I don’t know anyone liberal here that said they watch Beck, et. al. ALLTHE TIME. Your second sentence I can’t figure out. And your note to Sherrie doesn’t make any sense since her message certainly wasn’t "saying that nothing has changed." Her point was popularity isn’t necessarily connected with quality.

Phyllis if those liberals dont watch FOX news or those on FOX then how do they know so much about what is said by those on FOX?  They either watch FOX or visit their website - either way if you dont like what someone has to say then dont watch or read them…

What I responded to Sherrie was right on target.

Probably because they haven’t learned the art of "leaving it at home" and "take it to work" and harangue everyone all day long with the latest.  And some "liberals" do it as well. But "conservatives" have it down to an art form.

Baby - you make no sense but thanks for trying. I hear more from the liberals on what FOX says and does then I do from the conservatives.

Though I don’t have cable, I watch Rachel Maddow’s whole show every single night on my computer (at MSNBC’s website) without fail. I’ve come to rely on her for her take on matters important to me. What a delight it is just to watch that steel trap of a mind capture the essence of an issue. Hm! I’ve also caught her twice on MTP and she added so much to the discussion. Very impressive. The best of them today, I think. And about Keith Olbermann: His passion for what he believes is a welcome respite from the obstructionists and naysayers. He’s moved me to tears more than once, and his last "special comment" on his experience with his dad in the hospital was indeed one of those times. I applaud Olbermann and offer with gratitude a standing ovation to Maddow for thoughtfulness and insight, for the courage to question all those in power (even progressives and liberals), and — perhaps most important of all — for their compassion.

Rocky: what a lovely tribute to two "healthy puppies" that give us good news, humor,  intellectual heft, and are excellent examples of what real reporting can be. And yes, their compassion is evident.
