In Defense of My Favorite 'Sick Puppy' – Rachel Maddow, by Mr. wOw

Last week, the former president of the United States, George Bush I, weighed in on opinionated cable yakkers. He allowed that there was a "lack of civility" all around, and was generous enough to concede that President Obama was "entitled to civil treatment." (This is quite a lot coming a man married to Marie Antoinette, aka Barbara Bush. Who can ever forget BB’s pronouncement that the devastated Americans corralled into the Astrodome, to escape Hurricane Katrina, were actually living better than they usually did? "This is working out very well for them.")

But of course, the one-time, one-term president had to single out the talking heads on the left, referring to MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow as "sick puppies."

While I wouldn’t go so far as to call Olbermann a sick puppy, he has definitely worn thin. I once found him smart and not too over-the-top to irritate, but during last year’s campaign, he went off the rails – as did all the males on MSNBC – over the possibility that Hillary Clinton might win the Democratic nomination. And when she wouldn’t just fold up her tent and leave the campaigning field open to Obama, his head and his ego exploded, and it has been a swollen mess ever since.

Olbermann has become a parody of himself, preaching to the converted every night. He has his fans, for sure, but what he generally induces in Mr. wOw is a series of cringes. I’m on his side, but want him to shut up most of the time. And I detest that bit of business at the end: "This is the whatever day since George W. Bush declared mission accomplished in Iraq." What does that have to do with anything now? Enough. And Olbermann’s paper crunching and tossing it at the camera (his audience?) – showy and nastily aggressive.

Which brings us to Ms. Maddow. She began popping up on MSNBC as a guest, often sparring, quite enjoyably, with Pat Buchanan (and infamously, with Joe Scarborough, who did not enjoy the experience). She seemed to have been brought up through the auspices of Olbermann, they were friends. Olbermann clearly respected her. And what was not to respect? She was a breath of fresh air on cable: intelligent, prepared, reasonable, amusing, blessedly devoid of the self-activated intolerant scream button that afflicts so many.

Maddow’s star was rising, and just so we knew it, MSNBC tried to slap on a bit of eyeliner on and femme her up slightly. Not only was this unnecessary, it looked unattractive. For one brief, terrible moment Mr. wOw feared her boyish haircut was going to be poofed into some sort of faux "do." Tailored simplicity shouldn’t be messed with.

Clearly, Maddow was being groomed for her own show, and finally, it happened. Initially, however, it looked as if she was too much a creature of, and too influenced stylistically, by Olbermann. She was suddenly "cute." She made funny faces, she used funny voices. Once I turned her on to find her wearing a funny hat! She was also relentlessly snarky. That becomes tiring. And then there was that guy at the end of her show, the "pop culture" maven, or whatever he was (still is) to riff on something insubstantial. As if anything insubstantial is wanted from Rachel Maddow. She was no less intelligent, prepared and reasonable, but she was losing something valuable and unique in what appeared to be an attempt to be one of MSNBC’s frat boys. Mr. wOw was distressed.

Bonnie O, those of us on the right are routinely called names by some on the left on this site….we are called stupid, idiots, racists, we want Obama to fail, etc.    This goes on for several reasons, in my opinion.   First of all, it’s buyer’s remorse…they don’t like what they see in the White House from Obama and they are embarrassed and secondly they never want to hear about the many things that George W. Bush did right.    When they see GWB’s name they see "red" and ignore the fact that Obama is just like Bush….after all, Obama is simply a politician, a far left politician and not the majestic Savior they voted for.

I predict by the end of Obama’s term, Americans will be throwing tomatoes at the White House.

So true deber B! When you can’t dispute the facts, rant and call names…that’s the norm for the left.

elle vee, here are some facts for you!   Buyer’s Remorse….

CNN Poll: Half the country disagrees with Obama on issues Posted: October 20th, 2009 12:40 PM ET
From

WASHINGTON (CNN) – For the first time since he took over in the White House, Americans don’t see eye to eye with President Barack Obama on the important issues, according to a new national poll. But the CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey does indicate that a majority approve of how Obama’s handling his duties as president.

According to the poll, which was released Tuesday, 48 percent of people questioned say that they agree with Obama on the issues that matter most to them, with 51 percent saying no. That’s a switch from April, when 57 percent said they agreed with the president on important issues, with 41 percent disagreeing.

"Obama is facing crunch time on a number of controversial issues, from health care to financial regulation to cap and trade to Afghanistan," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "The fact that most Americans no longer agree with him on important issues makes his task harder."

Fifty-five percent of those questioned say they approve of how Obama’s handling his duties, with 43 percent disapproving. The 55 percent approval rating is down 3 points from September. Most recent national polls place the president’s approval rating in the low to mid 50’s.

Hi Mr. Wow

Thanks for the article, and the forum.  I see some of my very favorite voices here…..some of my LEAST favorites too.

I have been watching Rachael online. (anyone else think it smells funny that Faux is included in the cheap package with Dish, but one must pay bigger bucks for the bundle that includes MSNBC?)  I feel informed, and challenged to learn more after I hear what she has to say.  Did anyone mention that the ratings for MTP were especially high after she appeared with the big Sunday boys?  (The after-show segment was quite endearing too.) Rachael seems to excel at being real, and bright, and completely credible.

Unlike the Beck lunatic who will say or do ANYTHING to get attention.  I believe Beck and Limbaugh are cult leaders, and those who are enthralled by their putrid rants need to be deprogrammed.

Seriously.

I watched a video clip wherein the Beck lunatic was proudly exposing his blatant hypocrisy as he railed against the idea of volunteering, and service to the country.  That evil Obama is encouraging folks to work together and HELP each other.  Why that’s almost as bad as when that evil Obama encouraged the school children to study hard and stay in school!  Or when evil Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize signified a renewed global respect for America.

You tell ‘em Glenn!  The only volunteering that is worthy is when some radical rightie gins up a pot full of teabaggers who donate their time to carry ignorant hateful signs and regurgitate your dangerous insane conspiracy theories.  Oh that’s right……if folks volunteer to do BECK’S  malicious bidding, that’s DIFFERENT!

Rachael Maddow is a breath of fresh American air.  I am happy when she gets her props.

Do you think Rachael Maddow will talk about this?   I know Glenn Beck will!!!   No problem!

Dems Lock GOP Out of Committee Room to Protect Colleagues From Investigation Tuesday, October 20, 2009, 7:44 PM Jim Hoft

Here’s the Latest From the Pelosi Swamp–
House democrats locked Republicans out of a committee room today to avoid a subpoena vote. Democrats for months have refused to launch an investigation into Countrywide Mortgage’s reported sweetheart deals to VIPs.
The Hill reported:

Rep. Edolphus Towns (D-N.Y.) locked Republicans out of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee room to keep them from meeting when Democrats aren’t present.

Towns’ action came after repeated public ridicule from the leading Republican on the committee, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), over Towns’s failure to launch an investigation into Countrywide Mortgage’s reported sweetheart deals to VIPs.

For months Towns has refused Republican requests to subpoena records in the case. Last Thursday Committee Republicans, led by Issa, were poised to force an open vote on the subpoenas at a Committee mark-up meeting. The mark-up was abruptly canceled. Only Republicans showed up while Democrats chairs remained empty.

Republicans charged that Towns cancelled the meeting to avoid the subpoena vote.

Mary Quite-Contrary

Gotta love that transparency in the Democratic controlled Congress, huh?

BUT…and this is REALLY, REALLY IMPORTANT…did you read that Glenn Beck (looks both ways in cyber space) has a chalk board on his television set, and he writes stuff on it, and he has photos of the Czars and stuff.  WOW!!!  Now THAT is the news!!!

Mary, there’s no way that R. Maddow or any journalist or commentator will go where Glenn Beck goes.   He seeks the truth about this administration and he can’t figure out why the left doesn’t want to get involved in the truth.   President Obama was only elected because "the perfect storm" presented itself….and the left acts like he was sent from God.

"Deber B"

I am sure most of us understand that you have GREAT faith in cult leader Beck.  Surely YOU understand that others see him as a treacherous egomaniac who has every right to abuse his freedom of speech to foment division and fatten his bank account?

In the past you have responded to my replies to you by requesting that I ignore you, and I have done so.

My pleasure.

Now I will ask the same of you.  You have used my comment as a springboard to post more of your bombastic rightwing spin and gratuitous negativity.  In the future, please speed-scroll my comments and leave me out of your loop?

I apologize for hitting on a nerve, countrywoman.   It will be my extreme pleasure to scroll by your, uh, interesting posts.

Countrywoman,

Wonderfully and truthfully spoken. I couldn’t agree with you more. Thanks for the intelligent post!

Thanks back at you, Murphy Mac.  It has been awhile since I posted here, but I do feel strongly about Rachel, and how important she is to the political debate so I wanted to weigh in…..appreciate the reinforcement!

Mighty good to hear from you….I’m not here much either but I feel so strongly about Rachel Maddow….the intellectual curiosity, the animated debate, the civility, the wit…Thanks for putting in backup. I keep running through this thread (not for nothing that this avatar is a scroll…scroll…..!) and it seems to me that Rachel herself is faring pretty well…I think she is almost unassailable but I’m a bit biased…and that the debate about the relative demerits of Fox/MSNBC, real and/or imagined transgressions, is just another whistle stop on The Everlovin’ Red Herring Tour….Please write macwoof and say hi to the chickens for everybody! Folks have been inquiring after you.

Hey there Georgia
