In Defense of My Favorite 'Sick Puppy' – Rachel Maddow, by Mr. wOw

Last week, the former president of the United States, George Bush I, weighed in on opinionated cable yakkers. He allowed that there was a "lack of civility" all around, and was generous enough to concede that President Obama was "entitled to civil treatment." (This is quite a lot coming a man married to Marie Antoinette, aka Barbara Bush. Who can ever forget BB’s pronouncement that the devastated Americans corralled into the Astrodome, to escape Hurricane Katrina, were actually living better than they usually did? "This is working out very well for them.")
But of course, the one-time, one-term president had to single out the talking heads on the left, referring to MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow as "sick puppies."
While I wouldn’t go so far as to call Olbermann a sick puppy, he has definitely worn thin. I once found him smart and not too over-the-top to irritate, but during last year’s campaign, he went off the rails – as did all the males on MSNBC – over the possibility that Hillary Clinton might win the Democratic nomination. And when she wouldn’t just fold up her tent and leave the campaigning field open to Obama, his head and his ego exploded, and it has been a swollen mess ever since.
Olbermann has become a parody of himself, preaching to the converted every night. He has his fans, for sure, but what he generally induces in Mr. wOw is a series of cringes. I’m on his side, but want him to shut up most of the time. And I detest that bit of business at the end: "This is the whatever day since George W. Bush declared mission accomplished in Iraq." What does that have to do with anything now? Enough. And Olbermann’s paper crunching and tossing it at the camera (his audience?) – showy and nastily aggressive.
Which brings us to Ms. Maddow. She began popping up on MSNBC as a guest, often sparring, quite enjoyably, with Pat Buchanan (and infamously, with Joe Scarborough, who did not enjoy the experience). She seemed to have been brought up through the auspices of Olbermann, they were friends. Olbermann clearly respected her. And what was not to respect? She was a breath of fresh air on cable: intelligent, prepared, reasonable, amusing, blessedly devoid of the self-activated intolerant scream button that afflicts so many.
Maddow’s star was rising, and just so we knew it, MSNBC tried to slap on a bit of eyeliner on and femme her up slightly. Not only was this unnecessary, it looked unattractive. For one brief, terrible moment Mr. wOw feared her boyish haircut was going to be poofed into some sort of faux "do." Tailored simplicity shouldn’t be messed with.
Clearly, Maddow was being groomed for her own show, and finally, it happened. Initially, however, it looked as if she was too much a creature of, and too influenced stylistically, by Olbermann. She was suddenly "cute." She made funny faces, she used funny voices. Once I turned her on to find her wearing a funny hat! She was also relentlessly snarky. That becomes tiring. And then there was that guy at the end of her show, the "pop culture" maven, or whatever he was (still is) to riff on something insubstantial. As if anything insubstantial is wanted from Rachel Maddow. She was no less intelligent, prepared and reasonable, but she was losing something valuable and unique in what appeared to be an attempt to be one of MSNBC’s frat boys. Mr. wOw was distressed.

That is what is so scary about Beck is that millions of people do watch so he should be a responsible journalist and take his fact checking more seriously and not play to the people - just because millions watch, doesn’t make it right, same goes for Rush
I’m not saying people are stupid, but generally people want to believe what they watch, read or hear on the radio and journalists need to have the integrity to not fail them
It’s a sad testament to the failing of the Information Age, that we really are not better informed, only more bombarded with "stuff" that either doesn’t matter or just isn’t true
I watch C-Span now so I can hear the whole speech and then figure it out myself
canuck canuck said "Beck is not a journalist …."
key point…and yet he parades himself around as one, doesn’t he…

Amen :)
What I think is funny is the light cam over Rush in his dark little hole…he looks like a fat rat…who hasn’t gotta clue.
At one point I was licenced by the FCC, even had to take a test back then…would I be considered a journalist? …objectively?
Or do I make a better impact being just exactly what I am? Been going rounds with myself in my head, though…
"…then I hear Pict saying, You better do some research young lady…I don’t want to hear…here’s the song!" some things are just engraved in ones memory, regardless of trauma.

deber: …anymore than I would call you stupid and gullible for voting for Barack Obama.
Good point. For people who claim not to watch the FNC, it’s surprising how many can comment on Glenn Beck.
Marjorie C, get a load of this…..dems watching FOX News? Why certainly….they want the truth, too!
Fox News Reaches Across Party LinesMonday, October 19, 2009 9:59 AM

Is Fox News “an arm of the Republican Party” as White House Communications Director Anita Dunn says?
Democratic and independent voters beg to differ. A national survey conducted for the League of American Voters by the Global Marketing Research Center during last week shows that 46 percent of those who watch Fox News “just about every day” are Democrats or independents as are 50 percent of those who watch it “several times each week” or more.
Overall, the survey showed that 21 percent of all American voters watched Fox News every day and 18 percent watched it several times each week. So, combined, 39 percent watched the station several times each week or more.
• Among Democrats, 17 percent watched it several times each week or more
• Among Independents, 46 percent watched the station several times each week or more
• And among Republicans, 55 percent watched it several times each week or more
The survey indicated that 11 percent of all American voters watched CNN “just about every day” and 20 percent watched several times each week or more.
Combined, 31 percent watched CNN several times each week or more.
For MSNBC, the totals were 10 percent watched just about every day and 8 percent watched several times each week. Combined, 18 percent watched MSNBC several times each week or more.
These data, seen against the backdrop of the recent storm of White House criticism, casts the administration attacks on Fox News in a different perspective. Could it be that the Obama Administration is concerned about Fox News not because it is “an arm of the Republican Party” but because it is so widely seen among Democrats and Independents?
there’s always more..

When has Beck back pedaled? When has he EVER had to retract?
Sadly, Beck ‘vets’ better than the main stream ‘journalist’ schooled media.
Lastly, why doesnt Ms. Dunn actually CALL into his show, on his ‘red phone’ (the Chi-Com ‘operator’ a touch of sheer brilliance) and dispute or call out his ‘made up’ stories. Hmmmm…could it that the reason Dunn, (and Axelrod and Emmanuel) prefer the ‘lapdog’ CNN or MSNBC who don’t vet; fact check or even report…they parrot whatever the White House Press release du jour is.
The classic was the faux US Chamber of Commerce (called by fakesters) proclaiming the Chamber now ‘supports Cap and Trade’ and not only did the ‘jokesters’ get a full room (with credentialed pressititutes) but they wouldn’t listen to or accept the rebukes of the REAL Chamber President when he showed up…yep…what passes for journalism is so poor that even checking an employee index is way too complex a task.
And THAT is why Fox and Beck is up 211%…they actually DO journalism.
