In Defense of My Favorite 'Sick Puppy' – Rachel Maddow, by Mr. wOw

Last week, the former president of the United States, George Bush I, weighed in on opinionated cable yakkers. He allowed that there was a "lack of civility" all around, and was generous enough to concede that President Obama was "entitled to civil treatment." (This is quite a lot coming a man married to Marie Antoinette, aka Barbara Bush. Who can ever forget BB’s pronouncement that the devastated Americans corralled into the Astrodome, to escape Hurricane Katrina, were actually living better than they usually did? "This is working out very well for them.")

But of course, the one-time, one-term president had to single out the talking heads on the left, referring to MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow as "sick puppies."

While I wouldn’t go so far as to call Olbermann a sick puppy, he has definitely worn thin. I once found him smart and not too over-the-top to irritate, but during last year’s campaign, he went off the rails – as did all the males on MSNBC – over the possibility that Hillary Clinton might win the Democratic nomination. And when she wouldn’t just fold up her tent and leave the campaigning field open to Obama, his head and his ego exploded, and it has been a swollen mess ever since.

Olbermann has become a parody of himself, preaching to the converted every night. He has his fans, for sure, but what he generally induces in Mr. wOw is a series of cringes. I’m on his side, but want him to shut up most of the time. And I detest that bit of business at the end: "This is the whatever day since George W. Bush declared mission accomplished in Iraq." What does that have to do with anything now? Enough. And Olbermann’s paper crunching and tossing it at the camera (his audience?) – showy and nastily aggressive.

Which brings us to Ms. Maddow. She began popping up on MSNBC as a guest, often sparring, quite enjoyably, with Pat Buchanan (and infamously, with Joe Scarborough, who did not enjoy the experience). She seemed to have been brought up through the auspices of Olbermann, they were friends. Olbermann clearly respected her. And what was not to respect? She was a breath of fresh air on cable: intelligent, prepared, reasonable, amusing, blessedly devoid of the self-activated intolerant scream button that afflicts so many.

Maddow’s star was rising, and just so we knew it, MSNBC tried to slap on a bit of eyeliner on and femme her up slightly. Not only was this unnecessary, it looked unattractive. For one brief, terrible moment Mr. wOw feared her boyish haircut was going to be poofed into some sort of faux "do." Tailored simplicity shouldn’t be messed with.

Clearly, Maddow was being groomed for her own show, and finally, it happened. Initially, however, it looked as if she was too much a creature of, and too influenced stylistically, by Olbermann. She was suddenly "cute." She made funny faces, she used funny voices. Once I turned her on to find her wearing a funny hat! She was also relentlessly snarky. That becomes tiring. And then there was that guy at the end of her show, the "pop culture" maven, or whatever he was (still is) to riff on something insubstantial. As if anything insubstantial is wanted from Rachel Maddow. She was no less intelligent, prepared and reasonable, but she was losing something valuable and unique in what appeared to be an attempt to be one of MSNBC’s frat boys. Mr. wOw was distressed.

Georgia, if you like to laugh, hold on to your socks. Tonight Beck claimed that the President bailed out the auto industry so he could onstar placed in every vehicle and that way track every citizen. I’m confused, I thought Limbaugh was the druggie. They may be one prson after all.

Hi Helen…yes…my anklets are now knee highs….another thing I love about Dr. Maddow is her laugh….and the childlike delight in human foibles..including her own. The PhD is fine and dandy, of course, but her  native curiosity and sense of wonder (some might call it "adolescent fawning") are perfect creds to me. Total aside: an educator in the 70’s said, "Give every student the degree they want on the first day of freshman year…the ones who want to learn will stay…"

I know this is not about Beck, et. al., really, but things have a way of sliding on/off topic…and it’s really hard not to draw what might be an odious comparison…can’t help it…When he hit my radar, it sort of went from jaw-dropping disbelief to something akin to fury (when he started in on the art in Rockefeller Center) to numb horror…..to…..oh,……(Ba-romp-bomp….)… I get it…..this guy is a hoot!

Makes me want to see what’s next for him…..channeling Che G through the fillings in my molars? News at eleven…

I agree with you re: Rachel Maddow. She always appears very centered, and has definitely done her homework. She remains respectful, never yelling at her guests, but she never strays from the facts. I think being a woman gives her an edge. Her smile and laugh are sincere and I enjoy her show thoroughly, as does one of my daughters and her husband. We discuss her show often. Don’t forget, turn off your onstar, big brother is watching. and listening. And Glenn Beck is a newsman. Wanna buy some land?

Mr. Wow, I love clowns and have a nice Lladro collection of them.   I find them extremely interesting.   Beck is fun, actually, and millions of Americans like him….the ratings don’t lie.

I would have to agree with you Mr. Wow. …clowns are a bit creepy…especially when they violate women’s rights to privacy and free speech and hide behind false patriotism…don’cha think?

…becuase in the process they start at some point being violations of human rights and then The Universe takes back control.

At least in my reality that seems to be the way Karma is playing this one out.

…and clowns are clowns.

Mr. Wow

It sounds like a lot of people on here watch Beck.  I read his viewers are increasing.  Why would the opposition watch?  The more numbers he gets, the longer he stays on.  I don’t get that.  Even if he has 5 million viewers - there are still 300 million people that don’t watch him.  Ever since the WH has gone after Fox News, more people are watching.  Silly.

I am sorry that you do not give him a fair chance Maggie …. Beck is all of what you said but even more his is a teacher of truth. I have learned more from him these past few months than anyone else. As well Lou Dobbs is an excellent source of info as well - is Beck a drama King - sure is and that part I turn off but he is asking questions of this administration that should have been asked before Obama was elected - no answers are forthcoming - If they have noting to hide why are they not answering the simplest of questions ….. one out of five Americans are now watching Fox - and growing - I hope the White House keeps attacking them because people are moving to Fox in droves …. by the way I watched Beck when he was on CNN and he tore into Bush all the time …. He never supported him either …..

Canuck, I have occasionally watched Glenn Beck.  He is a talented, masterful storyteller.  As a radio jock, he once recreated War of the Worlds for XM Satellite Radio.  Excellent!  But by Beck’s own admission, he " is a fusion of entertainment and enlightenment".  Glenn knows how to weave his words to create a powerful narrative, accompanied by a well timed tear or sob.  When reminiscing about 9/11, Beck insisted that "regular American schmoes" ( like you, him, and me I assume) could have rebuilt that Ground Zero site bigger and better with a big sign on top…" COME and TRY THAT AGAIN!"

Sure thing, Glenn, let’s badger those jihadist nut jobs even more.  It doesn’t take much. That works well for us.

Beck is not about political correctness.  He is not a seeker of truth.  He is not about honesty.  Glenn is about Glenn and paranoid politics draws a big audience.  Glenn can take a relatively small sore and convince his audience there is a cancer growing uncontrolled.

FOX’s Shepard Smith refers to Beck’s studio as " the fear chamber".  Beck says he prefers " the doom room".   ( TIME, Sept. ‘09)

Glenn is a great entertainer, but he’s a train wreck when it comes to accurate politics.  He reminds me of another politician who once said, " Men high in this government are concerting to deliver us to disaster."  Gullible people believed him.  That man was Senator Joseph McCarthy.

I disagree with you Maggie - Beck has an excellent research staff and when he has been wrong (which is rare) he always corrects his statements the next day before moving on to anything else …. He takes responsibility for his mistakes and does not blame them on anyone else …. He is not a news reporter but he is quite the teacher and very dedicated to the constitution of America …. I have learned a lot from him ….

…"  he always corrects his statements …"  Bingo!  Yes, he does often retract or " mis-speak".  My point exactly, Canuck.  But he does not take responsibility unless cornered.

Consider Beck’s famous "Obama is a racist" statement.  Was that part of his excellent research staff’s effort?  Of course not. Glenn is a walking narrative, the showman.  He says whatever he wants because he knows there are those who need him for their own clarity and verification in life.  When under fire, he does his soft shoe.  When challenged, he addressed that " Obama is a racist statement" with another of his famous clarifications…"  Well, I don’t believe Obama likes white people."   There we have it.  Beck simply gave his opinion and people take that fodder to heart.

Beck said it.  It’s on TV. Must be true.  He loves the Constitution.  So did Timothy McVeigh.  So did Joe McCarthy.  So did the John Birch Society.  The Birther Movement is still alive and well.  You can learn from all of them as well.

People listen to this babble!  No small wonder we have bubbas toting guns at a town hall meeting where the President of the United States is speaking.

Please share. What part of the Constitution is someone like Glenn Beck dedicated to?  My guess is it’s his 18 million a year, which is not nearly as grand as Rush’s 37 million a year…. but Glenn is working on that; no doubt about it.   All he needs is a few more toys and props and " red buttons"… and viewers like you.

First of all I have read Obama’s books and he is a racist - that is my opinion from what I read but now I hear he may not have written them so perhaps that will be his out ….. I support Beck in that statement …. secondly he has rarely had to correct anything he has said …. He does not subscribe to the birther movement …. Lastly he has written some excellent books - my favoite one is Glenn Beck’s Common Sense - wonderful read …. I like him - u don’t - perhaps you like Maddow and Oberwhatever - I do not - I also do not like O’Reilly or Hannity but I like Greta and Lou Dobbs - to each their own ….

You certainly are entitled to your opinion.  May I ask what parts of his book(s) led you to believe he is racist toward whites, as Beck believes?

Also, if he did not write his books, who did?

Maggie, his books drip with racism …. absolutely drip with it ….
