Is Drama Over First Lady Touching Queen Racist?

By Billy Norwich
The Web has gone wild in response to the news that, when she met Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace, First Lady Michelle Obama put her arm around the Queen while posing for photographs. It is verboten to touch Her Majesty, you see. Or at least it was until now.

Well, get over it America. The Queen didn’t mind. Why should we? We say we aren’t — but we Americans are such snobs and the reaction here is proof of that as well as the subtle racism in castigating Mrs. Obama for touching the Queen. Shame on us. Only in America, such appalling lack of support of the First Lady.

News flash! The Queen has moved into the 21st century. Time for the rest of us to catch up!

For a balanced account of the incident, check out this article from the London Times. And get back to me.

Since I’m sure the Obamas were briefed on protocol, I wondered if maybe the Queen was a bit unsteady on her feet and Mrs. Obama was merely offering a little support.  (I have no reason to think the Queen isn’t rock solid…this was just my first thought when I saw the photo.)

People are dying around the world from war, famine, terminal illness and a flagrant disrespect for humanity.  We have had economic meltdown.  People are losing their jobs and homes at record numbers per month.  THIS IS STUPID THAT WE ARE EVEN TALKING ABOUT THIS………….  AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don’t understand the "racist" comment in the title of the article.  Who brought race into it?

Seriously?? Racism for touching the Queen. I cannot believe they would jump to this. Why? Because we have a Black president? If it had been George Bush, would it be racisn because he is a redneck? PAAALEASE!! Shame on the author for suggesting otherwise. They hugged. Plain & simple. MJ, I think "kerfuffle" was one of Rose’s dishes. I love that show.

That subtle racism comment in the article really offended me.  Please!  quit trying to be cute or make trouble or stop doing whatever it was you were trying to do, Billy N.

I don’t think that it is subtle racism, just that protocol thingy.  I think our President and First Lady are doing a fine job representing us.  I think the Queen is really enjoying them and I love the word Kerfuffle!!!

I can’t believe all the hoopla!  I think it was wonderful to see some genuine warmth between HRH and the First Lady.  I think HRH could use a few hugs.

I wonder if it was offensive to have revolted against the British monarchy in 1776?  Should we really be concerned about the Queen and what she thinks of us, or should we be looking at what we think of each other these days?  I dunno…

I think we can drop race and call all the critiques as being politically motivated.  Fox news coverage of G20 is different than other outlets.

I don;t know what gifts the Bush’s gave anyone.  Was it reported in the news as much as the Obama’s.  Was Laura Bushes choice of dress a major topic of discussion?

I think the Obama;s are dashing and fascinating as a couple.

Those who support the Obamas praise their performance and public persona.

Others pounced on them as acting inappropriately toward Gordon Brown when he visited Washington.  The Obamas were said to have given cheap gifts to the Browns and failed to entertain properly.

Their gifts to the queen were criticized by some as not appropriate.  They thought the queen was not a techno and would not know how to use an ipod.   Wow were they wrong.  She has three IPODS and a Blackberry.

Serena .
The Queen made the first move, and the First Lady just returned the affection.  I didn’t see a look of horror on the Queen’s face due to the gesture.  People need to get a grip.

If only Queen Elizabeth did not use the toilet like the rest of us, I would be concern of Mrs. O’s unclean arms around the queen! For those who made this observation, just remember she will eventually die like the rest of us because she is mortal. You do understand the difference between Mortal and Immortal. Right! Pope John Paul was / is a prime example of that. What is wrong with you people and all that nonsense?
