Is Drama Over First Lady Touching Queen Racist?

By Billy Norwich
The Web has gone wild in response to the news that, when she met Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace, First Lady Michelle Obama put her arm around the Queen while posing for photographs. It is verboten to touch Her Majesty, you see. Or at least it was until now.

Well, get over it America. The Queen didn’t mind. Why should we? We say we aren’t — but we Americans are such snobs and the reaction here is proof of that as well as the subtle racism in castigating Mrs. Obama for touching the Queen. Shame on us. Only in America, such appalling lack of support of the First Lady.

News flash! The Queen has moved into the 21st century. Time for the rest of us to catch up!

For a balanced account of the incident, check out this article from the London Times. And get back to me.

No.

Good grief!  What’s caused more comment with us Brits is that the queen reciprocated.  Let the Buckingham Palace comment on it be the end of this nonsense, "This was a mutual and spontaneous display of affection and appreciation between The Queen and Michelle Obama”.

There is a specific etiquette involved in meeting the Queen and Mrs Obama’s handlers should have briefed her more thoroughly.  They’re the ones who should be taken to task because they did not do their job.

As an ex-Pat Brit, had quite a chuckle at the mini faux-uproar (having been imbued with ‘the protocol’…not that I ever needed to be concerned!) but ‘racist’? Pish-tosh!  Although I must say I find it more amusing our gift to the Queen.  An iPod??

Yeah, the iPod has caused much more comment in the British press and on UK discussion boards.  However, most comments assume a woman of the Queen’s age wouldn’t appreciate such a gift.  Ageist, or what?

Racism???  Stirring the pot here, don’t ya think!?  Is there some real issue you want to discuss… if so I haven’t found it.  Might as well pick up something in the line at the grocery store!

Oh puh-leeze, I’m so sick of extreme hypervigilance regarding racism. Yes I know racism exists; being in a mixed marriage I’m personally all too aware sometimes! English protocol dictates *no one* touches Queen Elizabeth. If an exception is to be made for Michelle Obama on the basis of her skin color, *that* is a form of racism. QE and Buckingham Palace immediately accepted Michelle’s kind gesture and downplayed the breach of protocol to *avoid* a racially-charged row.

One of my in-laws watches me with this silly sort of hypervigilance: If my reactions/moods don’t fit her concept of me, I’m immediately judged and jumped.

This isn’t 1955 anymore. Let’s move on. British Royals protocol is THEIR call and everyone visiting the Queen should respect it. Period.

It must be an awfully slow news day.

Did everyone forget that the Queen touched her first. And also did you guys know the Queen already had an ipod. The Obama’s made a special gift by ahving it ingraved/personalized with music and visits, etc. Please read the news people.

I think the title of this article is racist.  Why even go there?

just media ratings for profit.  media has nothing to do so they wait for something anything except something of substance that will "make news"

Agree racism in this article is the worst article ever written by anyone media or otherwise.

Someone has too much time on their hands.

I don’t care a sh*t about Michelle touching the Queen of any country!!

I do care that my President felt the need to bow to that piece of crap, the king of Saudia Arabia. I couldn’t sleep last night because I did NOT like the youtube video of the incident. It is apparent he is knows the king and feels comfortable with his gesture. WHY???

The Queen has most certainly been touched ‘inappropriately’  before by a former Australian Prime Minister (Paul Keating put his hand on the Queen’s back).  Mr Keating was quickly branded the ‘Lizard of Oz’.

There are some things that are proticol, and BO and Ms. BO don’t have a clue what they are.  It is not up the our no class leaders to decide what will and will not be changed in another nation.  They have zero class, zero thought processes and no matter the hoopla being made over the Obama’s being the America’s royal family is a joke…never will they be our royal family and if that is as good as we can come up with, we are in sad, sad trouble.  We won’t even get into BO telling the citizen’s of Turkey that we are not a Christian nation…God Help Us…we are ALL in trouble. Let’s not get into the pathetic gifts they are giving…what idiots.
