Fallen Female Patriots: A wowOwow Salute to 116 Military Heroes

A Memorial Day salute to the brave American women warriors lost in the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
By The Staff at wowOwow.com

As Memorial Day weekend comes again, it's time to honor those lost in combat. With the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan still raging, it is the female heroes of those two conflicts to which wOw pays our respects today.

As we said last year in our first "Fallen Patriots" salute, no matter where you come down on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, there is no debate about our country’s devotion and gratitude to the men and women who have lost their lives in service to America.

This year, we again pay solemn tribute to 116 ultimate "wOw" women -- the 116 female members of the U.S. Military who have lost their lives since the onset of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Our hearts go out to their families and friends, and we stand humbled by and proud of a nation and a culture able to produce daughters so brave and so honorable. The price of breaking the glass ceiling in the area of combat comes with heartbreaking consequences.

According to the Military Times and their 'Honor the Fallen' website, six additional American servicewomen have given their lives in these two conflicts over the past year, bringing the total to 116. Those who have fallen this year are:

Air Force Tech Sgt Jackie L. Larsen

Army Pfc Jennifer Cole

Army Spc Cwislyn K. Walter

Army Sgt Simone A. Robinson

Army Spc Jessica Y. Sarandrea

Navy Lt Florence B. Choe

Their names and pictures, along with all 116 Fallen Female Patriots can be found in the photo essays below:

So tragic — these women were so young…………it is good to be able to see the faces of those who gave their lives.   True heroes all.

I have an uncle that served in the Korean War, a family friend who was a medic in the Viet Nam War and a cousin who (the son of the Korean War Vet), who served 2 tours, One in the Desert Storm conflict and most recently before retirement served in Afghanistan. And a couple other relatives who served. So I am all for Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day. :)

As a former Navy nurse, I am so proud to be even remotely connected to these women!  One of my proudest days was when the memorial statue to the Military nurses from the Vietnam war went up near the Wall.  Nurses as a group are the strongest women in the world, but the cream of the crop are the nurses who give it all they have tending our fallen heroes , be it in the field or stateside .  The women mentioned here are heroes in their own right and must command all our respect and remembrance.  I wish only peace and gratitude to their families.  My prayers are with all the military , past and present , this Memorial Day.

It is very hard to look at the pictures with the realization they are no longer with us. May they and all our fallen soldiers be remembered, not just this weekend, but always. God bless them and their families.

As a Flight Attendant who flew our Military troops in and out of the war zone for 5 years, I can say what an amazing honor is was to be of service to the thousands of Soldiers that we transported. There are no finer men and women anywhere in the world than those who are willing and have laid down there lives, whereby we as Americans have the wonderful blessings of Freedom. God Bless our men and women of the Armed forces and God Bless America!  I shall tip my glass this Memorial Day, in honor of you all!

Today I shall walk up the hill a few blocks to the old cemetery. I’ll bring my garden roses and find the fenced in WW1 heroes resting there. They gave freedom to my mother and grandparents. Then I search for the WW2 graves as I know for sure they gave me a life worth living.

I will go to my grave saying "thank you" to these heroes.

To add all these great women makes me weep.
