Famous Psychic Says Swine Flu Will Not Be the Black Plague, More Like Legionnaires' Disease

Psychic Intuitive to the stars Peggy Rometo does not foresee the swine flu becoming a deadly epidemic; predicts a U.S. death toll of less than ten, school closings, flight cancellations and more.

Last Friday, millions watched as a never-before-seen strain of influenza, mutated from pigs, emerged onto the world stage. Known as "swine flu," the new virus killed a swath of people in Mexico and has caused milder illness — and one death — in the United States and elsewhere. In response, the World Health Organization raised the pandemic alert system to phase 4 from phase 3, indicating that the disease is now being spread person to person. There are now at least 64 confirmed cases of swine flu in the United States; Spain and Scotland also reported victims, raising fears that the virus has already spread throughout Europe. Mexico, which has, so far, 159 suspected swine-flu-related deaths, continues to be the epicenter of the disease; U.S. officials warned against unnecessary travel there, and the European Union has called on travelers to avoid both the United States and Mexico. We asked wOw Intuitive Peggy Rometo for the goods on the emerging crisis. Here’s what she said.

wowOwow:
Will swine flu become a global pandemic?

Peggy Rometo: No. This is an ailment that reminds me of Legionnaire’s disease; it’s dangerous, but can be contained. This will not be a deadly epidemic like the Black Plague, or strike in numbers anywhere near those of AIDS or cancer. There is legitimate concern; this is clearly an issue the medical profession needs to address, which they are doing. But stress breeds stress; and it’s important to remain calm and attentive, and to follow through with common-sense measures such as hand washing.

wOw: How long will concern about this disease be front and center?

Peggy: It will be a lead story in the news for the next four to six weeks. Then it will recede — similar to the trajectory of Mad-Cow Disease. It will, however, remain in the background for a very long time. We just won’t live and die by it.

wOw: Is there a vaccine in sight?

Peggy: A prescriptive measure is now being formalized that will help to minimize symptoms and aid in containment. My sense is also that scientists will discover more about how temperature assists in the growth or stagnation of this organism. As with Legionnaire’s, we may not end up with a true vaccine — but we will nevertheless learn to control this disease. I also feel that swine flu is the kind of ailment that will exist in varying degrees, which will depend on the patient’s current immune and respiratory systems: People will come down with an either severe or mild case.

wOw: Will there be any more deaths in the U.S. this year?

Peggy: I feel the number of deaths will be very small — under ten — and that the individuals involved will be more susceptible to disease (for example, the elderly) or have a pre-existing condition (for example, asthmatics). The United States will be less vulnerable to swine flu because of our relatively high standard of living and health care. My sense is also that pollution plays a vital role in this outbreak; parts of the world with cleaner air will not be as affected due to healthier lungs and immune systems.

wOw: Will any airports in the U.S. close down?

Peggy: No large municipal airports will shut down, although there may be flight delays and cancellations along the Mexican border and in the southwestern part of the country: Houston, San Diego, San Antonio. However, this feels more like a temporary precautionary measure than a crisis scenario.

wOw: Will there be any more school closings in the United States?

How about this from CNN instead of bloviation from a so-called psychic?

Regular flu has killed thousands since January By Doug Gross (CNN) — There had been no confirmed deaths in the United States related to swine flu as of Tuesday afternoon. But another virus had killed thousands of people since January and is expected to keep killing hundreds of people every week for the rest of the year.

That one? The regular flu.

An outbreak of swine flu that is suspected in more than 150 deaths in Mexico and has sickened dozens of people in the United States and elsewhere has grabbed the attention of a nervous public and of medical officials worried the strain will continue to mutate and spread.

Experts are nervous that, as a new strain, the swine flu will be harder to stop because there aren’t any vaccines to fight it.

But even if there are swine-flu deaths outside Mexico — and medical experts say there very well may be — the virus would have a long way to go to match the roughly 36,000 deaths that seasonal influenza causes in the United States each year.

"That happens on an annual basis," Dr. Brian Currie said Tuesday. Currie is vice president and medical director at Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, New York.

Since January, more than 13,000 people have died of complications from seasonal flu, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s weekly report on the causes of death in the nation.

No fewer than 800 flu-related deaths were reported in any week between January 1 and April 18, the most recent week for which figures were available.

The report looks at deaths in the 122 largest cities in the United States.

Right.  So, it’s not when the hospitals get crowded that you start to worry about.  It’s when the mortuaries start getting overwhelmed that people will start to notice.  (Invest in funeral homes now.  Hey, some people can turn a profit out of any situation.)  If this turns into a true pandemic situation, and it may not, it’s possible 7 million people world wide might die of it or complications from it.  7 million out about 6 billion is a small percentage.  Places already hit hard by AIDS may fare the worst.

While I truthfully believe in a strong voice of intution, it hardly seems the situation to use a "psychic" to predict the course of a national health threat.

WOW: I would have appreciated an article or even a real time chat from a renowned medical authority (maybe someone from the CDC?  A university dealing with infectious disease?).

But, a psychic?  I’m sorry.  I enjoy Peggy’s column, and her insight.  But maybe she would be better off writing about something else a little less, well, medical.

Thanks, Sam for a great article as well.

Thanks for the article, Sam. I’d read something similar and wondered why the heck the H1N1 is getting so much press.

Also, for those who heard about a little boy dying in Houston of swine flu - his parents actually brought him in from Mexico for treatment. I wonder how many others will cross the borders for care in the US?

I, too, agree that medical topics are best left to authorities and not psychics.

No, seriously - a psychic?

Why not quote Obama’s dog? At least he wouldn’t con you.

"We should all strive to remain optimistic, and to nurture our mind/body connection. We can soothe the afflicted by sending positive energy (prayer/thought) to them. In addition, take time to support those around you who are consumed with anxiety about swine flu. Listen to their concerns and assist them in letting go of their fears by taking care of themselves mentally, as well as physically. This way, we can all become part of the solution."

Thank you Peggy, wise words, very wise words!

Peggy, you responded to my question when Wowowow was first starting up.  I asked you if I would win my sex discrimination, unequal pay, glass ceiling and contract issues law suit.  You said "yes" and gave some information on the situation that was right on. I need to tell you that I won the appeal in the circuit court on all issues!   If you can share  any feelings you have regarding whether we settle or go to trial and what the nature of the outcome may,I would greatly appreciate it.  It has taken me 5 years to get this point and possibly 2 more years lay ahead (and lots of expense) and my life has been destroyed in this process.  Thank you and congratulations.
