Michelle Obama ... A Rage in Red!

By The Staff at wowOwow.com

Michelle is all the rage.

The First Lady glows in red on the cover of Glamour’s December Women of the Year issue. While we’ve seen Mrs. Obama on the covers of Oprah, Vogue, Essence, Ebony, The New York Times magazine – just last week — and many more, this is the first time Glamour magazine, now 70 years old, has ever featured a First Lady. The Glamour editors note, of course, that Mrs. Obama has become a role model for young women, which was one of the reasons why they selected her as their cover girl.

"We love that she’s particularly set on expanding young women’s horizons," the staff writes on Glamour.com. "The First Lady is establishing mentor relationships between top women in the administration and girls in need in D.C., and is encouraging women leaders around the country to do the same where they live. Love that."

We love that, too. Few have graced the Oval Office with such style and substance…

She has mastered the delicate balance of wife, mother and advocate for important issues dear to her heart (including childhood obesity and military families). Oh, and one more thing: This Harvard Law School graduate is a true fashionista.

I agree, Mr. Wow, poor timing….the, uh, Nobel Peace Prize and now this.      Not good.   Sends the wrong message out to struggling Americans who are waiting for those jobs Obama promised with the $787 billion stimulus package.

I’m surprised by your response to her cover shoot and the rationale you are presenting for being against it. Because our nation is going through difficult times, in your mind the president and first lady should not be captured with smiles? They should not exude any glimpse of happiness or serenity? You and I as Americans dealing with the daily stress that comes with the financial choices we have to make just to survive, we are not filled with doom and gloom 24-7. We go to work, laugh and joke with our co-workers. Exchange gossip and such with the counter clerk at the coffee shop or restaurant.

We laugh and chat with family and friends, and in some instances complete strangers we come in contact in the course of our day. But we should not afford the same luxury to our president and first lady. No, they are to be seen as sullen and sad. Given all that is weighing heavy on their shoulders, when we see them on film or in photos they should not look happy. WE, can look happy but they are not allowed to. We can take happy and vibrant photos, but they should not.  Really Mr. Wow?

I guess you and I are very different. I want to see a happy President and first lady. I want the confidence and self assurance they both have that all will be fine, I want to see that radiate everywhere! It would be completely different if we were going through the rough times we are and they were living and acting as if they were immune to our pain. That they didn’t care and were doing absolutely nothing to help us. Then I would agree with you. But I know you better than that Mr. Wow, you know that is not the case. We do not have Bush and Cheney in the White House now.  We have someone in the White House who is genuinely trying to make sense of the cards he was dealt.

So although I am confused by your first reaction of "really?" when you saw Michelle on the cover, I hope it will be a passing thought and that you will allow her to be human. Just like it’s possible for you to be stressed and worried about our nation and STILL smile everyday, so too is it for our first lady.

Mr. Wow
Dear Belinda, you often post your gut reactions, and qualify by stating you feel you shouldn’t feel as you do, but…you do!  Well, that’s me on Michelle on the cover of Glamour.  I saw it, and I simply felt it was off. It shouldn’t be, but that’s how I feel. It hit me the wrong way.  In saying that, I don’t attribute negative qualities to either Obama. As a PR move, I’d have given it a second thought.

Well as you can see, you have a bevy of supporters on this thread who agree with you 100%. They skipped over what I knew you to mean was a simple and knee-jerk reaction (I was merely responding out of shock because this was not the norm from what I have read from you) however as you can see others have now pulled you to "their side" Now your opinion of her being featured now means you understand that she and her husband her the Devil incarnate! Responsible for all the ills of our nation and with this Glamour cover, just another example of the fact they just don’t get it. ;-)

And here you are thinking you were simply voicing an opinion. Naive Mr. Wow….what were you thinking?

Mr. Wow

Belinda….you know and I know that nothing the Obamas do will get any positive credit from those who hate them.  I don’t regret expressing my opinion.  I have a lot of empathy for the First Family, even if I am not super-crazy over the president’s performance so far.

Again, had I been in charge of the First Lady’s PR, I would have looked at the polls, listened to the buzz, and gotten her off Glamour’s cover. That’s just my take, and maybe it is the coward’s take, the fake take—let’s pretend Michelle isn’t attractive and appealing, it might offend the enemy!  It is in any case, only one insignificant person’s take.  On a fairly insignificant issue—a magazine cover.

Belinda, just so you know, you’re not out there all by your lonesome.  Mrs. Obama is a role model to children , of all races, who see what can be accomplished by hard work.  She is a devoted mother, wife and daughter—qualities that the Repubs allege to admire in other women, possibly other WHITE women?  I don’t care what they say, how they dress up this sow’s ear, it’s still racism in all its ugliness.

Also, I don’t agree with the statement made that 50 percent of the populace is feeling negative about our President and First Lady.  Not according to other sources, but then again, I don’t have time to troll the internet looking for  stats to support my point of view.  What would be the point?  Someone else would simply find a statistic that contradicts mine, and on and on we’d go.  At any rate, keep posting, Belinda Joy. I love to read your items.

Nobody skipped over anything Belinda, they just don’t agree with you. This "side" issue has got to be stopped. Where did Mr. Wow intimate that they were the "Devil incarnate"? No where.

You don’t have to be at  political adversary to get that even the First Family can be over exposed in the media and that can be taken a number of ways depending on the state of the Nation at that time.

Right now, people need jobs, not an elistist Hollywood- type hype on the First Family.

Mr. Wow, to some no matter what the Obama’s do it is considered stellar and "life changing."   I have stated many times that they are two ordinary people in extraordinary times like most of our presidents and their wives.   Why Obama and Michelle are treated like super stars by some of the democrats is a mystery to me.   I see absolutely nothing unusual about either one of them.      Meanwhile, back at the polls…….and the $12 trillion in debt….now that’s extraordinary.

Mr wOw,  I totally agree! But again it shows what a superficial state of Being an Harvard Degree can represent!

Hopefully, the Obamas may learn the "Rules of Approprieteness" before the Game is over!

It’s always such a pleasure to have Mr. Wow’s feedback, but today I find myself in disagreement, which, of course, does not in any way diminish my pleasure.  I am not in favor of the "Waiting Game." May I remind Mr. Wow that during the Depression years Hollywood came on like gang busters with Bugsy Burkley beauties and films that made one laugh or get lost in. In dark times a bit of whimsy, a bit of glamour is exactly what is needed. Since I don’t purchase these kinds of magazines I would be oblivious to all this if it weren’t for you people bringing it to my attention. Would you feel differently if Mrs. O was pictured in jeans and sweatshirt working in her garden? A great big smile as she hold up a carrot?
By phyllis Doyle Pepe on 11/03/2009 10:54 am
Mr. Wow

Dear Phyllis…I don’t want to see Mrs. O holding up a carrot.  I really don’t want to see either O on the cover of any magazine right now.  Sure, I remember all those Depression-era musicals (most of which referenced the hard times in some way) but I also remember the gritty common-man films that proliferated.  Not to mention the elevation of the mobster, thanks to Prohibition.

I’ll say it again—-right this second in the Obama presidency, Michelle on the cover of Glamour magazine doesn’t seem the smart move, even though she is being lauded for all her excellent, serious qualities.  Perhaps it is only that it is a publication named Glamour.  Maybe I’d feel differently if Mrs. O was dazzling on the cover of Good Housekeeping?

Mr wOw,  LOL   The cover of "Good Housekeeping" is a better PR! God Bless your "Family Values"!

Well, you may have a point––Good Housekeeping––the all American stamp of approval––but Glamour?  Keep it safe? Shucks, Mr. Wow––where is your "all balls out" spirit?
By phyllis Doyle Pepe on 11/03/2009 4:36 pm
Mr. Wow
Dear Phyllis…my balls are out, thank you very much.  I’m approaching this from an ouside looking in perspective.  And, as I have stated elsewhere, it is  perhaps the coward’s perspective. I’d have preferred to adore Mrs. O on Glamour’s cover with no thought of "how it looks" to the other side.  I didn’t.  Maybe I’m too nervous. So much is at stake.
