Greta Van Susteren Takes on Letterman, Sally Quinn for Palin-Bashing (Video)

It’s one thing to bash the woman, but quite another to bash her children, Van Susteren says; Levi Johnston pipes up about Palin’s resignation.

Greta Van Susteren is mad as hell and she’s not gonna take it anymore.

On her FOX News Channel show, "On the Record," last night, Van Susteren took The Washington Post’s "Sally Quinn" and others to task for shamelessly bashing not only Sarah Palin, but Palin’s children, as well. Meanwhile, Bristol Palin’s baby’s daddy, Levi Johnston, has his own theory about why Sarah Palin announced her resignation from the Alaska governorship: money. More on that later.

Van Susteren said last night:

"Why is Washington Post columnist Sally Quinn gratuitously trashing Gov. Palin? Quinn even accuses Palin of exploiting her children, specifically Bristol and little Trig, little Trig, who has Down’s syndrome. And David Letterman — he also can’t stay away from the governor, either."

Letterman made another sexually tainted joke about Palin this week, saying: "Is it just me or is anyone having naughty thoughts about Sarah Palin and those waders," referring to the fishing outfit she wore when talking to reporters this week while defending her resignation.

In an interview on MSNBC Thursday, Quinn, founder of the Post’s "On Faith" blog, said:

Well, clearly, she has not put her family first … And these children have, it seems publicly, to have been exploited by her in a, I think, really unfortunate way … She brings them all to the convention, including Trig, the baby. She brings the pregnant daughter with the boyfriend who clearly didn’t want to be there. She then travels around with the children, using them as sort of photo ops … she brings the children up when she needs them to shore up her own image.

Think what you want about the Alaska governor, but it’s likely many women think these kinds of slams are just inappropriate.

"This is wrong because, first of all, they are attacking her parenting skills. And why we are debating whether or not she should have had her kids up as late as she did on the night of the nominating convention is just borderline bizarre, particularly because we don’t ask that question of any of the guys who bring their children to big political events," former Massachusetts Gov. Jane Swift, a Republican who also had young children in office, said on "On the Record." "But even importantly, don’t we have more important things to be discussing in this country? And activities, we could move on to things that actually impact the millions of families who don’t have a job or don’t have paid maternity leave, things that are legitimate public policy issues."

Meanwhile, Levi Johnston, Bristol’s former fiancée, told reporters Thursday that he once heard Palin talking about how she could have a better life in which she could spend more time at home with less stress, and could accept high-paying offers coming her way. After all — she is the Republican everybody’s talking about at the moment. Johnston said that in December Palin "had talked about how nice it would be to take some of this money people have been offering us and just run with it, and saying forget everything else." Palin spokeswoman Meghan Stapleton had a quick comeback for that, saying: "It is interesting to learn Levi is working on a piece of fiction while honing his acting skills."

It’s no secret the Palins and Johnston have become, well, more distant in recent months as Johnston has taken to the press to criticize Alaska’s first family, and to talk about how much visitation his family should have with his son, born to Bristol, December 28.

Maggie — Levi can’t afford to loan anybody enything.  He couldn’t even afford to buy a rubber!

His girlfriend was the daughter of a governor.  She could have afforded to stop by the local Walgreens.  Maybe she was in too big of a hurry to drop her jeans.

A classy, classy statement. Thanks for reminding me that it’s ok to bash unwed teen mothers (but only if their parents are Republicans!).

Right up there in class with Gator’s statement.

Maggie - "His girlfriend was the daughter of a governor"

Yep and sweet Levi could see the dollar signs.  He was the "studly stud" BMOC on campus. Girls were throwing themselves at his feet.   Now just think about it - I’m sure this wasn’t his first time - don’t guys carry protection too?  With his allowance from his mother’s "enterprise" and his allowance he could have hit the men’s restroom and found the "trojan" of his choice.  Or were his bulging jeans where he keeps his brains?

Sure, that’s one scenario.  But Princess Palin was already doing the nasty with Levi after only a few weeks… I think it was three months actually.  Plenty of time for that girl to get some birth control pills before she started losing control.  Kids these days!   You know, Gator, when I was 16 I had a serious boyfriend.  My mom asked me if we were sexual.  I told her the truth. No.  She then told me to tell her if I did become intimate,  and we had "the talk".  No doubt she would have had me on birth control.

Now, I’m guessing Sarah didn’t have that talk with her daughter.  Strange, seeing that he was staying at the house.  Maybe she was too busy, out skinning a caribou or shooting some wolves from a helicopter.   Just a guess.

Maggie W — My mama used to tell me - "Don’t do anything you wouldn’t  do in my presence".  Sorta made you think when you were out there in that car!  :)  But when I was coming aloing - guys always, for some reason, carried a rubber in their billfold.  Sorta bragged about it!  But the times they certainly have changed.  But, when you think about it - men haven’t!  :)  They still have their brains just behind their zipper.

So its OK for Lady Gator to say that Levi did not have enough to buy a rubber, but not OK for Maggie to say that someone may have been in a hurry during the 3 months that they were fulling around under Palin’s roof, to drop her jeans?  Maybe they were trying the stay on course and do the abstanance thing like the fine Mrs. Palin suggested?  But they are teenagers and I would guess that if we talked about safe sex in schools then maybe they wouldn’t be where they are now.

Stay with it Maggie!

"but not OK for Maggie to say that someone may have been in a hurry during the 3 months that they were fulling around under Palin’s roof, to drop her jeans"

Maggie’s suggestion that Bristol (not the unspecified "someone", but Bristol) was in too much of a hurry to "drop her jeans" to buy birth control is a snarky, mean spirited comment, and I suspect that you, as an intelligent, reading, thinking human being are fully aware of the fact. Just out of curiosity, what would your reaction be if she had said the same thing about Obama’s mother?

"I would guess that if we talked about safe sex in schools then maybe they wouldn’t be where they are now"

Right, because it certainly prevents all the teens who have had the talks in school from being in similar straits, right? And what evidence do you have that Bristol and Levi didn’t have those classes in school?! I’ve heard it repeated often enough, but to date I’ve never seen a jot of evidence to support the assertion.

"Maggie’s suggestion that Bristol (not the unspecified "someone", but Bristol) was in too much of a hurry to "drop her jeans" to buy birth control is a snarky, mean spirited comment…"

Dang, Rachel.   Sob.You really hurt my feelings.  Weep.  Boo hoo.  Sniffle.

But how do you know it wasn’t Bristol who started unzipping her jeans or unsnapping her bra first?

By Maggie W on 07/10/2009 3:36 pm
Rachel F

I don’t. Neither do you — know either way. Nobody but Bristol and Levi know that (thank goodness — who wants to know?!).

Hurting feelings? No. But the comment was mean and uncalled for; we can disagree with someone’s politics without being catty about their teenage daughter. Again, what would you think if I said something like that about Obama’s mother? Chances are, you’d think it was a nasty comment; and you’d be right.

And I think people shouldn’t have such thin skins.  So what if Bristol was in a hurry to drop her jeans?  Big whoop.  She’s a teen with that hormone rush.  That doesn’t make her a sleaze or that she is " easy".   The two may have actually been in teenage love.  For all I know, Bristol is a nice, decent kid.  If so, she wouldn’t have taken up with a loser, which is how Levi is being portrayed now.  His mother has been mentioned several times.  Isn’t that callous, Rachel?  You can’t have it both ways…. saying negative comments about Levi and his family are just fine, but don’t go there with Bristol and the Palins.  That just doesn’t jell.
By Maggie W on 07/10/2009 4:29 pm

First of all, you and I both know what you were trying to imply with your comment. Secondly, I didn’t make any of the comments about Levi or his mother, and I agree that they are in poor taste (although those comments were at least about things that we actually know happened, not snarky speculation). Thirdly, suggesting that a good kid wouldn’t take up with a loser is not necessarily true, either…lots of perfectly "good" people do lots of really stupid things.

Finally, am I the only one who thinks its funny that there’s been such a lot of "Levi love" running around in dem circles lately (you know, since he started saying bad things about the Palins), when before he was "redneck trash"?

Rachel, Rachel, Rachel.  I don’t hang in Dem circles and really don’t care what the hell the Palin children are up to.  Right now, I need to refill the bird feeders outside.  They are making quite a racket.  Also, my green pepper plants are doing well. Hey… I make some mean stuffed bell peppers!  Come on over,  we’ll have peppers and iced tea and talk Palin and Levi Love.   I need to get your address for Christmas and birthday cards, too!      :)

What doesn’t jell is the ugliness of your comments on the physical relationship of two teens. Really, is Sarah Palin that much “in your head and under you skin” that you have to resort to internet “make out” scenarios for her daughter? Months ago, Levi was “red neck trash” here…now, he seems to be a highly respected policy contritutor to the DNC. Does Rahmy have Levi’s celly on speed dial?
