Franken Starts Hiring Senate Staff; Coleman Files Appeal

Maybe, after all, Minnesota will have three Senators. Republican Norm Coleman, as promised, has appealed the ruling that named his Democratic challenger Al Franken the winner of the Senate race. In the meantime, Al Franken has started hiring Senate staff.

Coleman’s team got a pretty clear slap from the three-judge panel that ruled in Franken’s favor, but he is now taking his case to the Minnesota Supreme Court, making an argument based on equal protection. Part of their case revolves around 132 ballots in a place called Dinkytown. Coleman does not want to count the ballots. Franken does. Yes, that’s part of what this is about. Minnesota, we’re sorry.

A ruling is not expected before Memorial Day, and if it’s not in Coleman’s favor — and the experts do not think it will be — he could try the U.S. Supreme Court.

Even though Franken has not yet really gotten the job, he is starting to work for the good people of Dinkytown, and he has hired his first staffer, Alana Peterson, as Minnesota State Director, who will be liaison between the state and the Washington office . Naturally, the Republicans were a little peeved by the hire (they called it a "publicity stunt"), Democrats hailed the choice.  Surprise, surprise. It’s what we’ve come to expect from Minnesota.

Remember that the Republicans called Vice Pres. Al Gore "Sore Loserman" in 2000 because he wanted a recount as specified by Florida law. The Florida recount lasted a few weeks. Republican Norm Coleman’s recount has been going on for four months and it ain’t over yet.

There’s speculation that the Coleman is delaying the inevitable to slow down an investigation into his allegedly shading dealings with Nasser Kazeminy, who is accused of trying to funnel $100,000 to Coleman through Coleman’s wife’s employer.

Other speculation has it that Coleman is corruptly slowing down the electoral process to assist his Limbaughite former colleagues in their  campaign to obstruct efforts to rebuild the US government after it’s near fatal weakening during 15 years of GOP control.

Of course, both could be true.

Rudi, the Republicans are Masters of "Do as I Say, Not as I Do."

Also, Coleman better stop appealing before Franken wins in a landslide.  With each recount Franken gets more votes.  Hey Coleman!  When you hit bottom, don’t dig.

Franken should have started to hire staff, it is the responsible thing to do. In all the whirlwind and flurry of attention about the senate battle in Minnesota, people have forgotten that they have been without one of the two representatives for their state. Especially in these tough times they need advocates for their state. I’m all for fighting to be assured there is a clear winner, but now that the courts have spoken, Coleman would serve his state well by simply bowing to the victor.

I say enough with this already. You lost Coleman. I am sorry too. I do not like Al Franken as far as I can throw him. I would love to see him fail as a Senator. I am glad he wont be mine.

No Senator is an island entire of itself; he is a piece of the Senate, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by a recount, the Senate is the less, as well as if CSPAN were, … so do not ask for whom the roll calls, it calls for thee.

Franken will be a U.S. Senator; he will represent us all.

Personally, that delights me.  He is very intelligent and thoughtful, and a sense of humor is a good addition to any elected body.
