Gallup: More Americans 'Pro-Life' Than Ever Before

Fifty-one percent of Americans describe themselves as ‘pro-life,’ according to a new Gallup Poll.
By The Staff at wowOwow.com

More Americans than ever before describe themselves as "pro-life," according to a new Gallup Poll. When asked, "With respect to the abortion issue, do you consider yourself pro-life or pro-choice?" 51% of Americans said the former, while only 42% said the latter.

This is the first time the majority of pollees have described themselves as "pro-life," the polling firm reports:

The new results, obtained from Gallup’s annual Values and Beliefs survey, represent a significant shift from a year ago, when 50% were pro-choice and 44% pro-life. Prior to now, the highest percentage identifying as pro-life was 46%, in both August 2001 and May 2002.

Additionally, a recent national survey by the Pew Research Center recorded an eight percentage-point decline since last August in those saying abortion should be legal in all or most cases, from 54% to 46%. The percentage saying abortion should be legal in only a few or no cases increased from 41% to 44% over the same period.

Where do you stand, reader: Should abortion always be legal, never be legal or be legal on in certain circumstances, like rape or incest?

I agree with Maggie.  Everybody has the right to make their own decisions.

The first trimester, rape cases, deformity would be areas I could understand abortion.  Feel the morning after pill should be readily available and open dialog between parents and child should be a comfortable discussion rather than having the child talk to her peers.  Am still surprised at how many teens think they can’t get pregnant the first time.  With such chances for disease nowadays I am surprised that pregnancy is the main concern.  The "yucky" stuff needs to be imprinted on the minds of teenagers including oral sex.  I remember hearing that throat cancer is on the rise and it is not always due to smoking these days.

I agree with Judy K.,  if young women are able to be properly educated, and birth control is readily available, then abortion should need to be an option very little of the time.  It should, however be legally available as the last, worst option.

Being ‘pro-life’ is a personal choice. A woman’s right to choose does not take that personal choice away from anyone.

Get prepared….more and more Americans are sick and tired of the poor choices of a few citizens that can not and do not take responsibility for their actions.

Put on a condom, that the right that women have that is irrefutable.

I think that many pro-lifers would be opened to special circumstances and the morning after pill. It can be handled in more than an either/or situation.

A woman’s right to choose will not be taken away. It wasn’t in the 8 years the GOP controlled all 3 branches and it won’t be in the future.

oh yes… and their solution? make those irresponsible people who made poor choices go through with a pregnancy, give birth and raise that child - so they an teach them how to be irresponsible and make poor choices just like they did.

great idea! how pro-life of you.

I would have no answer on any poll that asked that question. Because I am absolutely for life and could never have had an abortion. But I am absolutely NOT willing to impose my views on anyone else. Not republians or any other political party or bent, and certainly not those who claim a fedex account with the Infinite Omnificence should have that power. I will always vote pro-CHOICE so that I and my children and my children’s children—and everyone else—will always be the ones—the only ones—who make decisions about our own bodies and our own reproductive values.

Rocky, I feel the same way.  I wouldn’t have an abortion, but I’m not going to impose my choice on someone else.  Abortion is legal, and it’s not going anywhere.

I have no problem with someone being pro life as long as they don’t want to take someone else’s choice away. That’s why its called Pro Choice. It is an individual decision.

The question is: Should abortion always be legal, never be legal or be legal on in certain circumstances, like rape or incest?  The answer, I believe, is that abortion should never be necessary!  RESPECT is the answer and the key.  If you respect yourself, you should not get into a situation where you have to make a decision that effects another life or two (the father).  If you respect others, you should not get into a situation where you have to make a decision that effects another life.  And I am not only talking about getting pregnant - there are a variety of nasty diseases out there, as well!   Women have choices (except in rape or incest, which is less than 1% of all abortions performed): they can choose to have sex or not, they can choose to use birth control or not.  Being Pro-Life  is not taking away someone’s right to make smart choices!  And it is not an "individual decision".  Like it or not, there is another life at stake when you are making your "choice".   Imagine if everyone respected all life - from conception to natural birth.  What a beautiful society we would have!  Crime would be almost non-existent and abortion would be unnecessary.

Margie, in all due respect, you probably have not spent much time with sexually active young teens in the inner city.  I have.  And many are hanging on by the last thread and have no hope.  When you have spent a few hours with a 14 year old girl in the projects who sleeps on the outside apartment stairs at night so her drunk stepfather won’t be hitting on her, then get back to us. You might have a different , but very shocking, revelation.

I  am tired of the bubble bath and silk sheets crowd  assuming that young girls should just use protection and young boys should just use condoms… and POOF !  problem solved !!   How easy is that?

It’s not.

if it was that easy, we would not have these problems.
