Ever seen German Chancellor Angela Merkel in her bra and panties? Well, now a lot of Germans have. And we bet Merkel isn’t too happy about it.

A giant illustration of 54-year-old Merkel in matching purple bra and knickers graced a billboard on Berlin’s main shopping strip, the "Ku’damm," Thursday, reports Agence France-Presse.

It’s part of an underwear company’s advertising campaign urging consumers to trade in their old underwear for a discount on new ones. And it certainly is eye-catching! The slogan? "The country needs new undies." Ouch! Is there a political statement in there? It’s a play on the advertising campaign encouraging people to trade in their old cars. Only we’re hoping they won’t be reusing the underwear like the cars, because that’s just not sanitary …

Merkel’s office isn’t exactly jumping for joy over the whole thing. "The chancellor’s office does not want to comment on the campaign," a spokesman told AFP.

I’m sure Angela Merkel like Queen Victoria was "not amused" at that poster.  No one is safe these days, if they think it will sell the product anybody is fair game.

I think it sounds funny and maybe they have a good reason to want to throw her nickers out?

Referring back to the Margo thread, maybe the photogs pretended to be Jehovia’s Witnesses and she was just trying to scare them away?

Thanks for making me cringe - and laugh!!

While I don’t agree with what was done to the poor woman, the billboard was kind and had no wrinkles or stretchmarks.

By the way, She was obviously photoshop’d with this one (face imposed on a body).

From one big blonde German chick to another, Frau Merkel… sue their asses! (danke)

There was a story WOW ran a couple months ago I believe in which Woody Allen’s image was used on a billboard without his authorization. I’m not sure what is going on these days with advertising executives working under the assumption they can use anyone’s likeness to sell a product without that person’s consent?

Are they thinking if they are sued, what they would have to pay would be less than the profits earned from their little scam?  Very odd.

Good questions, Belinda. My guess is that they’re hoping that either the celebrity won’t bother to sue, or else that the controversy will serve as advertising in its own right.

Were she a male German chancellor I wonder if they would do the same?
