Has there ever been a presidential election wherein you didn't exercise your right to vote?

August 26th is Women’s Equality Day, the anniversary of the signing of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote. How often do you take advantage of this right?

Your vote always counted, even if your candidate lost.  I know what you mean though.

In my early twenties I didn’t vote. I didn’t care! I was busy surviving and didn’t even know there was an election likely. I didn’t get real political and into voting until I got a bit more relaxed in my late twenties. The first time I voted was for Dukakis. I think I’d have been about 25 as I think that was in 1988. I took my then 6 year old daughter to the rally he attended in our city.

IMO, voting is a duty as well as a right & a priveledge.  When somebody whines about politics, politicians, or the state of the city, state, or nation but refuses to vote "because my vote doesn’t count", I stop the conversation right there.  As the singer Steve Earle said "If you don’t vote, don’t bitch".  As far as I’m concerned, anyone who doesn’t exercise the right to vote has no right to exercise their mouth about what’s wrong.

That is a good question Eldebbo, all I did was talk about JimCrow laws in a post and it was deleted, but the spammers get free rein.

I have voted for every President since Reagan’s second running.

Beth — You are much younger than I am.  I’ve voted for every President and in every local election since John Kennedy!  Now, I feel old.  :)

Lady Gator - Beth makes me feel old, too.  I cast my first vote in 1968, though I feel old, I’m good company, and that comforting.  Patty

patricia s — We are not getting older my deah, only better!  Just remember this quote by Karle Wilson Baker…

"Let me grow lovely, growing old -

So many fine things do:

Laces and Ivory, and gold,

And silkes need not be new;

And there is healing in old trees,

Old streets a glamour hold:

Why may not I, as well as these,

Grow lovely, growing old?

So, Patty - let us say we are just growing lovely!

I have often wished I could vote in these elections, which sometimes seem far more momentus than those of my voting-eligible lifetime! I’m glad to be in such good company at the polls each year! My first presidential election was Bush v. Gore.

Raugiel Reddel - Remember, it’s never the wrong time to do the right thing.  You voted when the time was right for you; don’t underestimate that.

Oh! I’ve voted in every election I was elligible for, but the first election I was of age to vote in was Bush v. Gore! Of course, the 2008 election was griping, momentus, and full of national drama that I am sure we will look exciting through the lense of history, but its hard to imagine not to be more excited about say, Nixon v. Kennedy, than the Bush elections.

Raugiel Reddel - Sorry I misread your previous comment.  Elections and their results are very exciting - win or lose.  It’s a part of history all of us belong to.
