It's the Abortion Issue, Stupid, by Mr. wOw

There are so many distressing aspects to the Democrats caving in to anti-abortion forces fighting the health-care bill. Certainly the most distressing are the anti-abortion provisions written in to the bill, steps that go far beyond long-standing prohibitions against public funding for abortions – now, coverage for women wanting the procedure will be limited even for those paying for it without government subsidies. As Ezra Klein writes: “Abortion coverage will not be outlawed.  It will simply be tiered, reserved for those rich enough to afford insurance themselves or lucky enough to receive it from their employers.”

Thank you Mr. President for your jelly-like spine.

Mr. wOw voted for Mr. Obama. The prez has not been a disappointment. This was expected. Mr. wOw tossed away his rose-colored glasses many decades ago.

Nancy Pelosi spent a good deal of time on Friday and Saturday conferring with the League of Catholic Bishops. You know, so they could put their fine points on the matter. Really? Really? Excuse me, separation of church and state – I know I read about that somewhere. Oh, that’s right, in the Constitution. Eh, such an old document, why pay attention? Before anybody gets all exercised, this is not Catholic bashing – Mr. wOw has no use for any organized religion. And certainly no use for any religion having a scintilla of influence on government matters.

Yes, I know, there can be talks between church and state, you just can’t favor one religion over another. Still, I don’t feel comfy with church chat anywhere but in church.

I love it when people say they “morally object” to abortion, and therefore none of their money should fund it, in any way. Hmm … Mr. wOw morally objects to war. His tax dollars support it. Mr. wOw really, really morally objects to the death penalty. His tax dollars support it. Should Mr. wOw re-think this paying taxes thing?

And on the matter of the death penalty, the Catholic Church has condemned it, right along with abortion, as “murder.” Did Ms. Pelosi promise the bishops to help eradicate the death penalty? I mean, there she was, and there were the bishops. What a wasted opportunity for Pelosi to negotiate with this sector of the American government.

You know what? The unemployment rate is higher than it’s been since 1983. Mr. wOw has grown weary of the health-care debate, especially as the Democrats are such scurrying mice, willing to water it down tragically. So forget the damn thing and get us some jobs. If you think you can manage it.

I am anti-abortion, however, I do believe in the death penalty. If someone takes another persons life, then as far as I’m concerned, they lose their right to live. Unborn babies did nothing wrong. These women can bear the child, then give it up for adoption.

While I am opposed to the death penalty (for lots of reasons) you simply can’t compare a convicted criminal to an innocent child, you are correct Eldebbo.

Dear Eldebbo, I respect your feelings, however I believe it says "Thou shall not kill" in the Bible (if you want to go Biblical)  There’s no qualifying amendment.  So the guy who pulls the lever or injects the deadly drugs?  Murderer. Especially because the accused has done nothing to the executioner, so it’s not even the old eye-for-eye (back to the Bible)

So tell me Mr. wOw, if you were faced with someone pointing a gun at you threatening to shoot, and you also had a gun. Would you kill or be killed?

Death Row executioners are not defending themselves.  As for myself, I guess I’d shoot, if I could man up and even hold the gun.  What’s the point?  Abortion is legal, let’s take the "morality" out of it.  These health care amendments make it more difficult for some women (poor women) to get an abortion.  Not fair, I say.  And I wildly object to religious "consultations" in any matter that doesn’t involve incense or graven images.  Keep the priests out of health care.

Death row executioners are just doing their job. They shouldn’t be blamed for what they do. The jury that convicted that person are the ones responsible for the death of that person. My point is, I think abortion should be illegal for everyone, rich and poor.

Ahhhh…."just doing their job?"  Eldebbo, you need to read the history of World War II

Abortion is legal, let’s take the "morality" out of it.

I oppose abortion simply because I believe each of us is unique and abortion implies that we are not.    There has never been another Jack Kennedy.  Or another Jacqueline Kennedy.  Or another Ronald Reagan. Or another Elizabeth Taylor. Or another Ella Fitzgerald. Or another Maya Angelou. Or another Michael de Bakey.  The list is endless.  You have to ask yourself what the world would have been like if their mothers had decided to have an abortion. And then you have to wonderwhat the world would have been like if so many other mothers who decided to have an abortion had decided not to.  Perhaps we would have had a solution to the problem of Israel and Palestine. Perhaps we would have had nuclear disarmament. Perhaps we would have had a cure for cancer.  Who is to say what contributions so many would have made to our world had they been born.

It has nothing to do with morality or legality. It has to do with what our world is doing without.

Dear Baby…Hitler, Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy…there’s an argument on the other side, too.

Not really. Evil is something very real in our world for reasons no philosopher or theologist can really explain apart from conjecture. But using Hitler as the example to further my example what might have happened had Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin not been born because their mothers decided to have an abortion?

James Hillman touched on the "evil among us" in his The Soul’s Code in which he talks about the "bad seed" and perhaps the "bad seeds" exist simply to force us to choose between evil and good.

Thats pretty much the same argument which people like to use "What if your mother had aborted you?"  I simply reply, if I was never born, why would I care?  If many people in the past hadn’t been born, we would not know the difference.  So the argument is irrelevant.

But you miss the point. Which was how much enlightenment and enjoyment so many have added to the human experience that no one else has or ever will.

Your position relegates us all to nothing more than total insignficance.  What  a wonderful outlook on life to have.

It is to me.  I don’t ponder what-if’s. I’m much too busy living in the now.

I have had an abortion and it was the hardest thing for me to do. I was 15 years old, was raped by a family member. Tell me, would you have wanted me to bring into this world a child that I do not honestly believe that I could love? I went to church and when I found out I was pregnate, I talked to my pastor. He more or less condemed me for not "protecting" my virtue and for allowing myself to be taken advantage of. Please tell me Ms Baby, would you have taken an insetious child born of Rape? Because in my wonderfully little "Christian" town I could find NO ONE to support me, not family or church. So please, tell me how a young child, at 15, was expected to make this work without me going to work at McDonalds for the rest of my life. I had an abortion and now I am married to a wonderful man who knows why I did what I did. We have one child and are currently expecting another. I am not glad that I have had an abortion, BUT I did what was right in the situation. Not everyone that goes out for an abortion is someone who was too stupid to take birth control. That’s what I hate because it’s a stigma that I somehow brought this upon myself. Most people do not have an abortion because they want to. They have it as a last resort or for a medical purpose. Think about that the next time you get up on your high horse Ma’am.

I am sorry no one supported you and will avoid the subject of "Christian" hypocrisy but will tell you that one of the "greats" we all admired through the years was in fact the daughter of her grandfather and as the years went by managed to accept him as both her father and her grandfather which I would imagine is not easy to do but she did it but she was always mindful of her mother’s hatred of him and managed to accept that as well and simply never mentioned one to the other.  Life is not easy. Filled with choices. They are ours alone to make.  What is right for me may not be right for you.  I am not condemning you or anyone faced with the choice.  And support the right to make the choice.  But still I wonder about what the child might have accomplished. For themselves and for all of us.
