How to fix the health-care crisis in baby steps …
By E.D. Hill

Editor’s Note: Emmy Award-winning journalist E.D. Hill is a nationally known TV and radio host and author. She spent the past ten years hosting several daily programs on Fox News Channel and was Bill O’Reilly’s sidekick on The Radio Factor, heard on 400 stations. She currently hosts "Good Day" with E.D. Hill on americaswebradio.com Tuesdays and Thursdays 8 - 9 AM EST. E.D. and her husband have eight children and pets too numerous to mention. She splits time between their ranch in Texas and the East Coast. You can contact E.D. at hillfriends.com.

Have you ever had a friend who you thought was tried and true until, one day, with a sweet smile and earnest eyes, she asks you to become the chairperson of some gala? She will, she solemnly promises you, help in every way. Please, be a doll and help her out. It’ll be easy! I had a friend like that. She’d just been through the wringer with a scum-sucking, philandering, dweeb of a now-ex-husband and I wanted to help. "OK," I said, as the word "sucker" began to appear on my forehead like Harry Potter’s scar.

The general complaining we heard from people about their health care 18 months ago was much like general complaints about our own mothers.

I’ve been naïve about a lot of things in my life. I had no preparation for what was I was about to undertake. I’ve always had an aversion to what I consider wasteful spending at events that purportedly have the purpose of raising as much money as possible to fund a worthy project. I decided the entire event from top to bottom needed to be done differently than the way they’d done it the past 25 years. I devised what I thought was a brilliant, inexpensive plan. The outcry was deafening. People liked things the way they’d always been. Sure, they thought it was a good idea to try to cut costs — to an extent — but they didn’t want the whole thing upturned in one swoosh. Which leads me to our federal government. Odd jump, I know, but stay with me.

Everyone is wringing their hands about how to change the entire health-care system. Eleven million to 15 million people (according to most high and low estimates) are chronically uninsured. They need help. So why can’t the government focus on those who are the most in need? In the 1991 comedy "What About Bob?" Bill Murray portrays Bob Wiley, a multiphobic man who stalks his psychiatrist, Dr. Leo Marvin, after Marvin gives him a copy of his new book, Baby Steps, and leaves on vacation. Murray uses the "baby step method" — baby steps to get on the bus, baby steps down the aisle, baby steps … —  to get to Marvin’s vacation home in New Hampshire. I like baby steps. They’re safe and small. They give children practice at a very important task. After mastering baby steps they are ready to walk, even run. So why can’t the government take baby steps?

The government likes things BIG. Medicare is a government-funded and -run social insurance program. (Former President Harry Truman was the first beneficiary. Why is it politicians always jump to the front of the line?) Its own 2008 report assumes funds will be gone by 2019. Medicaid, the state-run program for low-income residents, faces funding problems and relies on money from the federal government. Both programs are part of U.S. Social Security, which, by dollar amount, is the largest government program in the world and the costliest item in the federal budget. State governments need help funding burgeoning unemployment programs. I will not argue that these programs are unnecessary; however, they rarely help correct existing problems and are inefficient.

Because many are not against health care "reform", that is the first lie. They are against Obamacare.

Big difference, huge difference. Night and day. Freedom or control. Choice or mandates.

Obamacare is a front and the propaganda is fronting his take over of the economy. GE will make billions, Americans will suffer.

…again, another reason for me to negotiate my care directly with my doctor as opposed to paying into a system that has no benefit to me or my family.

It appears " baby steps" has no clear definition when it refers to health care reform.  I believe we are seeing baby steps. The first step is to get a plan in place and to prevent the naysayers’ goal of undermining the entire effort that has been ongoing for so many months. Implementation of this plan will be unlike any we have previously been involved. Like Medicare’s evolvement, there will be continual "steps" in the future.. revisions, additions, and ongoing reassessment.

While it appears Congress is closer to having that first step in place, new twists continue to emerge. Last week Sen. Thomas Carper proposed leaving the decision on whether to establish a public option up to the states.  That proposal, along with Sen. Snowe’s " trigger" plan are getting second looks and are generating much discussion.

One way to have enough money for Medicare, Medicaid and universal health care is to change the psychology of this nation from a violent country to a peaceful country.  Then we would have enough money to take care of everyone.  In other words, let’s move the money from the military machine to the health care machine.  We would save so many more lives on all fronts……at home and abroad.

Ok Suzanne, you would have this country spend LESS on defense? Have you not bothered to know what other countries are doing  on that front? Do you not understand what the followers of the 12th Imam have in store for America and Israel?

This nation does not live in a vacuum. Other nations are not peaceful, the nature of man, tribes, nations is not one of peace. That is a Disney movie, but not reality.

It has nothing to do with "the psychoilogy" of  THIS nation. We are a giving and caring nation. If not for us, many a nation would not be free or functioning. I will not sit here and listen to that type of disparging of this country and its people.

The psychology that we need to adjust is of those that think that everyone else is responsible for their bad decisions. Even our poor are doing alright compared to many other countries. The psychology that owning a TV, a car, a home, an Ipod, a cell phone, a brand name tennis shoe, is necessary….THAT needs to be changed.

The psychology is:  if we don’t change our "mind-set"  (a nice word for brainwashing) then we are going to destroy ourselves. We are a violent nation.  Just look at what are children are doing to each other.  Their behavior is a good reflection of adult attitudes.

It’s time for a paradigm shift.  We cannot be a country that continues to solve our problems with violence.

I would suggest reading some European newspapers or watching BBC.   The news you are getting is rather limited in points-of-view and supports the military establishment (mindset).

Obama has tried to shift some of this mindset and people have criticized him because they are not well informed, because they are watching radically bias news organizations whose only objective is getting them to watch you….so they care make more money.

It’s time to wake up!

"Just look at what are children are doing to each other.  Their behavior is a good reflection of adult attitudes."

Our children lack discipline as well as our young adults.  As soon as parental and school discipline of children became out of fashion, the increased violence and disrespect began.  Understanding Little Johnnies behavoir and talking to him about it just hasn’t worked, has it?  I’m not a proponent of harsh physical discipline, however, a well placed swat on the rear and or some hard work to pay for transgressions is called for in many cases.  Discipline includes encouragement, love and understanding as well as punishment.  It’s great to get to the bottom of the "why" for misbehavoir as long as the communication that it is still unacceptable is there.  Many parents are either to afraid or to lazy to discipline properly….besides, why should you when it is acceptable to blame someone or something else rather than take responsiblity.  Until people in this country decide to be responsible to their actions and hold their children accountable, it will not get better.

The kids are learning the violence from television.  Have you viewed the television commercials lately.  Even selling fast food, there is violence in the 30 seconds.  Our children have become immune to violence, and so have their parents.  They have been well trained by the TV shows and the commercials.  Violence is what this country is all about these days.

How to fix health care? Make the insurance companies non-profit. ,They are basically the reason health care is in a mess.

Then you will have to make the manufacturers of the mammography, diagnosis x-ray, burn, magnetic scan. and all other treatment machines "non-profit", not excluding the manufacturers of the simple band-aid.

Go, Bonnie O.!  This whole issue is crazy!  Why not just set up a program that lets anyone who truly needs healthcare and can’t get it sign up for USA Care (or whatever they want to call it).  I’ll bet by the time they sifted down to those who really do quality, it wouldn’t cost a TENTH what this new bill will.

Besides, the bill being hammered out in the Democrat basement won’t look anything like the Baucus bill, and will cost three times as much.

Do you ever get the feeling the liberals seem to believe that as long as a man’s down and out he’s one of God’s children, but if he’s healthy and successful, he immediately is considered one of the Devil’s own?

Correction:  First paragraph, should be "qualify" - not "quality"

Exactly what they want for the sheeple to believe Callie. That way, they get the ones that can be baited into forcing the government take over of private money. Then, only those in the govenment will be "rich". The sheeple are far to jealous hearted to realize that they are giving up any hope that THEY will become sucessful.

Manipulation, pure and simple. While they have us arguing over what we think are relevant facts, the government is making deals and money for them and the chosen ones. Who would have thought that grown adults would fall for such devisive and manipulationg tactics?

Soros did. And he was right. Meanwhile, all the elitist do gooders join in, thinking that it is nothing off of their backs. Slowly, they are realizing what is happening. When their rights and freedoms starts disappearing, they will have to face the facts. All of that "feel good" "tree hugging" plans and laws are just a way for the government to get a foot in the door. That’s all it is.

A foot in the door is all that the govenment needs or wants. Welcome to world governance 101; get your foot in the door. Then, riches beyond the borders of America is yours, a world economy awaits, a world governance to be a part of.

Big stuff for big egos and big pocket books.

Not so good for a free nation or America.

Yay Bonnie O!!!  About 13 yr ago I was involved in the expansion of services in a small hospital.  Just to buy the MRI machine was well over 1 million, not to mention the construction costs to retro-fit the radiology dept for the equipment, staff training, maintenance, etc.  When I hear comments like..it doesn’t really cost $1200 for an MRI,  I think, actually, it does.  I don’t even want to think what MRI machines cost now.

I am sick and tired of hearing how "bad" our health care is. It is NOT bad, it is the best that the world has to offer. Instead of handing the govenment power over your life and death people, why not force them to address tort reform? How about illegals? How about the fraud waste? Get all of that under control and we will be able to GIVE whoever needs the help, the money.

Call then baby steps if you want to, I call it common sense. It seems however, that way too many people are ill informed on the state of our health care.

Obama wants your money. He wants control. If he wanted you to get better health care, he would NOT be pushing this plan. It is ALL about a government plan , one plan. Wake up people, you will not have a seat at this govenments table. That premise is a lie and you are being used.
