Hillary Clinton Pledges $110M for Pakistan's War-Torn Swat Valley; Text Message to Help (Video)

As humanitarian situation reaches crisis point as more refugees flee Taliban vs. Pakistani military violence, U.S. steps in to help, but is it enough?

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton pledged $110 million to Pakistan’s war-torn Swat Valley Tuesday, a sign the United States is serious about helping the country defeat the Taliban once and for all.

The humanitarian situation there may be reaching a crisis point as the Pakistani military continues to pound the Taliban after the group broke a "peace" deal. Two million people have been displaced and more may flee, reports Al Jazeera. Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari will meet with government and United Nations officials on Wednesday. Money from the United States would go toward delivering tents, radios, water, generators, food and other supplies; about 5,000 tents have already been flown in to house refugees.

Clinton said the aid signals support since the Pakistanis have started taking the Taliban threat seriously.

"There is a real national mood change on the part of the Pakistani people (and politicians) that we are watching and obviously are encouraged by," Clinton said Tuesday. "I think it has to do with a recognition that this is no longer about a part of their country that seems quite distant from the population centers … Providing this assistance is not only the right thing to do, but we believe it is essential to global security and the security of the United States, and we are prepared to do more as the situation demands."

Want to help some of the millions displaced by violence in Swat? Use your cell phones. Text the word "swat" to the number 20222 and make a $5 contribution that will help the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees provide much-needed supplies.

This is the tip of the iceberg for millions and millions of aid to Pakistan.   With the more than $11 trillion Obama has spent in less than 100 days, we now find ourselves spending even more with no end in sight.   Obama will be "printing" money soon and we will shake hands with inflation and another recession will follow.

You are probably right Deber but I don’t see that Obama has better options.  The size and market dominance of corporations was once controlled. Conservatives pulled regulation oversight so they were free to make all the moves that enriched an elite few with policies that led to the economic collapse.  They were also permitted fantastic growth so that they became too big to fail.  That is, they are so huge and so ingrained in the economic fabric that if they fall, the whole economy goes with them.  So, we have to bail the SOBs out.  It may not work but it’s certain that doing nothing won’t work.  The hope is that by shoring these mega companies up and injecting stimulus money into the economy, jobs and investments will come back.  Obama is trying hard to steer this stimulus money into long neglected infastructure projects and also trying to reform systems like health care that have become horridly wasteful but very rewarding for parasites such as the insurance companies that have too much input into and take too much profit from the system.

It’s unfortunate that Bush turned his back on Afghanistan, al Qaeda, and the Taliban but he did, and he spent us into incredible debt to gain the PNAC’s dream of controlling Iraq.  So, the Muslim extremists that hate the West and have no compulsions about killing even their own people in their fanatacism, are still strong and active.  They have to be stopped.  It’s not just the safety of the Pakistani and Afghan people at stake.  Our securtiy is at stake, especially with a weak government in Pakistan with its nuclear capacity. That’s another thing Bush did wrong.  He pushed Musharif too hard and may have contributed to his downfall. He was no jewel but had more authority and control over the Pakistan army than those in government now. So we have to pay now and add onto the horrendous debt the previous administration ran up even in view of liklihood of future pain.  Otherwise, we are guaranteed to suffer even more economic collapse now and increasing threat from terrorists that are still strong since we focused our war and resources on the wrong nation.

I don’t agree that George Bush turned his back on Afghanistan.   He had a viable threat to address in Iraq.   To be fair, The Taliban has left Afghanistan and repositioned themselves in Pakistan.   There’s only so much our country to do to fight terrorism but now Obama knows what Bush was up against.   None of us out here in la la land have access to intelligence information but some in the White House do.   Bush only left a deficit of $1.2 trillion.   Obama has it up to $11 trillion and rising.

We are at opposite ends of understanding which came first…the chicken or the egg.    However, President Obama sees it clearly  now.    He, in his way, is validating Bush policies.

Thank you for responding to my post.
