Hillary Clinton Meets With Sexual Violence Victims in Congo, Says 'My Husband Is Not the Secretary of State' (Video)

Clinton explodes when audience member asks what her husband thinks of a government policy; fights for women rape victims used as ‘weapons of war.’

Hillary Clinton is making headlines today for lashing out at a student in the Democratic Republic of Congo who asked about her husband’s opinion on a policy issue instead of her own. But she’s also getting some attention for a good cause: meeting with rape and sexual violence victims in that war-torn country.

As for the secretary of state’s public outburst, while on a whirlwind seven-nation African tour an audience member apparently hit a nerve when asking what "Mr. Clinton" thought of a World Bank concern about a Chinese loan proffer to the Congolese government.

"Wait — you want me to tell you what my husband thinks?" Clinton asked. "My husband is not the secretary of state, I am … You ask my opinion I will tell you my opinion, I’m not going to be channeling my husband." Watch the video of Clinton’s response below.

ABC News says the translator made a mistake and asked about Bill Clinton, when the student was actually asking what President Obama thought.

But even if it was a matter of something lost in translation, we should give her a break. She’s toiling in Africa for good causes with little attention while her husband Bill gets accolades and then some for securing the release of American journalists Euna Lee and Laura Ling from North Korea. She reportedly had to answer a lot of questions on that topic when she arrived in Africa. And we can’t even imagine the toll all that travel takes on a person. It can’t be easy being married to Bill and having a famous last name. But was it a little too defensive?

On another note, Mrs. Clinton is addressing a serious problem in the Congo: sexual violence. She is in the eastern region of Kivu today to meet with rape victims. Aid workers say as many as 400 women are raped every month in Eastern Congo, which has been plagued by ethnic wars and violent militias that have displaced hundreds of thousands of people seeking refuge. Women who attempt simple acts like leaving their home to find food are at risk of violent and humiliating attacks. Rapes also occur when women are sleeping in their refugee camps.

Clinton, a longtime women’s rights advocate, said continuing sexual and gender-based violence in Kivu is "truly one of mankind’s greatest atrocities."

"The entire society needs to be speaking out against this," Clinton said. "It should be a mark of shame that this happens anywhere in any country … We have to speak out against the impunity of those in positions of authority who either commit these crimes or condone them."

She said she will be pushing for help for "those who are being abused and mistreated and particularly the women who are turned into weapons of war through the rape that they experience."

In Goma, Clinton might meet with President Joseph Kabila and UN peacekeepers, and will participate in a roundtable discussion with victims of sexual and gender-based violence in the country. Let’s hope she can make some inroads in a country that desperately needs to take better care of its women.

That is correct.  She is toiling for a very good cause that deserves far more world wide attention.  For many years Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush have championed for women’s rights and welfare around the globe.  There are many others, such as Mavis Leno( Jay’s wife). In spite of their efforts, this heinous behavior toward women and even very young girls continues.

I don’t hold much hope for UN peacekeepers.  But by keeping this on the front burner, she may make those inroads.

She looks tired and agitated in the video.  However, she is the Sec. of State and should have tempered down, considering the student was probably quite nervous.

Maggie, I agree compeletely but would add that she should have made a joke instead of saying what she said the way she said it.  Tired or not, agitated or not, she is the Secretary of State.  As for cutting her a break - NO!  Imagine if she were president and made this same comment to some head of state or someone much more important than a student.  While I understand this is an emotionally charged issue, we, as women, have to be smarter, quicker, calmer, more rational than men, because of how we are viewed and valued (or not valued) by them, even when we don’t feel like it.

Considering that the question turned out to have been asked incorrectly by a nervous student, Hillary should definitely have pulled out some of her political charm before giving her response. Like it or not, she will no doubt feel the backlash from this gaffe for a long time just because she is a woman!

Green Tears, clearly, it’s not the translators fault, even though it was translated incorrectly….she showed her true colors.   Let’s see, Nancy Pelosi, Hillary Clinton, Barney Frank, Joe Biden, President Obama all speaking inappropriately…well, the list is just too long with this administration.   Quite frankly, all the republicans need to do at this point is sit back in their easy chairs and watch the White House disintegrate on its own.     They are doing a great job on their own bringing embarrassment to themselves.

deber:  …the translators fault

I would be very surprised if a woman as educated as Hillary didn’t understand French.  She lost her cool, and that’s it.

Yes, Marjorie, and for any woman to suggest that she was speaking up for Women’s Rights is comical.   She made women look very bad.

Marjorie,   You are CORRECT! She lost her cool! The bitch came out! To confirm this, check the Maureen Dowd article in the NYTimes "TOILET PAPER BARRICADES".

She’s also our Diplomat in Chief! And that role requires managing one’s emotions and actions. I suspect Obama would have used humor to put the person, who asked the question, at ease and still managed to make his point. Hillary’s smart and often means well, but even in this role, where she has received accolades for a job well done, she hasn’t been able to shake the chip on her shoulder.

Give me a break……she had a right to stand her ground………..the question as it was interpreted for her was insulting, and she was there to promote women’s rights………it hardly promotes women’s rights to not address what appeared to be an insult to her as a woman.

You go, Hillary………………

Actually, MK, she had absolutely no right to behave the way she did.   She looked like a bitchy, cranky, unhappy in her marriage woman.   She, in no way, brought class to the office of Secretary of State.

Hillary shot down every chance she would ever have of running for president again not to mention looking like a raving maniac to the rest of the world.   Classy, huh?

If looking like a maniac to the rest of the world precluded running for president — GWB would never of had a second term.

That’s just your personal opinion, MKP, and as such only carries weight among the democrats.

"… just your personal opinion … " Now, I may be wrong, but isn’t that what wOw is encouraging? A diversity of personal opinions? Some may be more well-informed than others, some may be coming from positions where there is a particular political bent … but you remind me of the 12-year old who recently wrote to Margo, worried about her similarly-aged friend whose set-in-cement opinions were so alienating and off-putting. Her little friend seemed literally terrified to even HEAR about an opposing - or merely different POV. They apparently carry no weight with her. Do I regret that Secretary of State Clinton made an uneccesarily cutting response to a question? Yep. No excuses coming out of this lefty radical for her snappish retort. Of course, that’s just the personal opinion  of a democrat, so it carries no weight with you, I guess. On the other hand, reminding this young man in no uncertain terms that not all cultures adhere to the treatment of women that is all too common in Africa (and many other areas of the world) is not - in my book - a totally irresponsible act. Could the point have been made with more diplomacy? Yep, again!

I use you as an example of the APEX of refined behavior, deber, dahling.  I can’t IMAGINE YOU losing your temper, my dear.
